Wilkie Collins (1824–1889), English author and master of the detective novel wrote numerous essays, short stories, more than a dozen plays, and published twenty-three novels including The Woman in White Collins' father William John Thomas Collins (1788–1847) was a well-known landscape artist, produced over 200 major works and whose patrons included King George IV, aristocrats and members of the clergy. William became a full member of the Royal Academy in 1820. [William] Wilkie Collins was born on 8 January 1824 at 11 New Cavendish Street, St Marylebone, and was baptised on 10 February at the parish church of St Mary-Le-Bone, an area of London where he would live for most of his life. His mother Harriet (1790–1868) was a daughter of Captain Alexander Geddes of Alderbury. At the age of twenty-nine Collins had a bout of rheumatic inflammation of his eyes that, along with gout, would afflict him off and on for the rest of his life. Among his future reading audience there developed a fascination with the parallels between his private life and his stories. Collins and his brother Charles led a relatively happy childhood being home schooled, though under the heavy hand of their mother and father's evangelical Christianity. Including his distaste for formalities, Collins would soon adopt unconventional attitudes and dress; he sported a long beard and spurned bourgeois society.

He received his education first at private school and later in Italy, whilst living there with his parents. Against his father’s will, he became a writer. Thanks to his connections with Charles Dickens, he gained popularity. At one time, people even queued up to get a copy of his new book. In 1860 he first published The Woman in White. Other works include No Name (1862), Armadale (1866) and The moonstone (1868). Exploring the realms of mystery, suspense and crime, he is often regarded as the inventor of the detective story.

Wilkie Collins
William Wilkie Collins was born in London on January 8, 1824, the oldest son of a fashionable artist. He was named after Sir David Wilkie, a friend of the family. After an early career in business, he studied law and was admitted to the bar, though he apparently never practiced. He also tried his hand at painting, and wrote many articles and stories that were published anonymously. A biography of his father was his first major published work, the success of which encouraged him to write for a living. His first novel, a historical work called Antonina or The Fall of Rome , was published in 1850. In 1851, Collins was introduced to Charles Dickens by a mutual friend. The two formed a lasting friendship, and worked together on Dickens’s magazines, Household Words and All the Year Round , where many of Collins’s works appeared in serial form.

In 1848 he published "Memoirs of the Life of William Collins." In 1850 appeared his first novel, "Antonina." His novels are most skillfully written, entertaining, and absorbing. Many of them are translated into other languages. Always a hard worker, he continued his arduous literary labors, in spite of ill health, until within a short time previous to his death, which occurred in 1889. He was a great friend of Charles Dickens. His brother married Miss Kate Dickens, daughter of the novelist, in 1860. < Great authors of 19th century literature >

About the Author
English novelist, whose unconventional private life and determination to tackle social issues disconcerted his audience. Many of Wilkie Collins's novels contain sympathetic portraits of physically abnormal individuals. Critics often credit Collins with the invention of the English detective novel. While he was aware of the work of Poe and Gaboriau, he worked in the mainstream of Victorian domestic and social fiction. Sergeant Cuff from Collins's novel The Moonstone (1868) became a prototype of the detective hero in English fiction.

The Literary Works of Wilkie Collins
Collins, Wilkie born Jan. 8, 1824, London
died Sept. 23, 1889, London Wilkie Collins an early master of the mystery and detective story and the first English novelist to write in this genre. The son of William Collins (1788–1847), the landscape painter, he developed a gift for inventing tales while still a schoolboy at a private boarding school. At an early age he was placed in the tea trade, where his performance was undistinguished. After studying law at Lincoln's Inn, he was admitted to the bar in 1851 but proved to have as little aptitude for law as for commerce. He worked, instead, on an historical novel, painted well enough to have a picture hung at the Royal Academy, engaged in theatricals, and visited Paris. His first published work was a memoir to his father, who died in 1847, Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. (1848). His fiction followed shortly after... His Life
Return to Wilkie Collins Appreciation Page There are a number of Collins biographies. One of the most recent is called "The King of Inventors" by Catherine Peters (thanks to one of my corresponents for this), but I haven't read it yet. The following is culled from a number of sources: William Wilkie Collins was born in London on 8 January 1824, the oldest son of William Collins, RA, a fashionable painter. Collins was named after a friend of the family, Sir David Wilkie, RA. His early career was in commerce, but he then studied law and was actually admitted to the Bar, but does not appear to have practised. He had been writing articles and stories for some time, many of which were published (though apparently anonymously). He also seems to have tried his hand at painting, and in 1848 had a picture exhibited in the Royal Academy. His first major published work was a biography of his father, and the popularity of this book seems to have encouraged him to write seriously for a living. His first novel, Antonina or The Fall of Rome was published in 1850. This was a historical work, along the lines of Bulwer-Lytton's
