William Collins
William Collins was born at Chichester and was educated at Winchester College and at Magdalen College, Oxford. His Persian Eclogues (1742) were published anonymously when he was seventeen. Coming up to London from Oxford he tried to establish himself as an author. He published Odes on Several Descriptive and Allegorical Subjects (1746) with his friend Joseph Warton whilst in London. The volume did not do well, and when his father died in 1744, Collins was left in debt and without a job. He got to know Dr Johnson who arranged an advance for him to write a translation of Aristotle's Poetics. However, when an uncle died leaving him £2000, Collins abandoned the project and paid his debts. After this he travelled for a while, but fits of depression became more serious and debilitating. He broke down completely on a journey in France in 1750, and died insane at the age of 38 in his sister's house in Chichester.
The poet Thomas Gray commented favourably on Collins's work, and as the century progressed, he gained in reputation. Some of his finest odes as said to be 'Ode to Evening' and 'Dirge in Cymbeline'. His last know poem is Ode on the Popular Superstitions of the Highlands , written in 1749. His sister destroyed his manuscripts after his death. The Complete Works are edited by Richard Wendorf and Charles Ryskamp for the Oxford English Texts Series (1978).

born Dec. 25, 1721, Chichester, Sussex, Eng. died June 12, 1759, Chichester pre-Romantic English poet whose lyrical odes adhered to Neoclassical forms but were Romantic in theme and feeling. Though his literary career was brief and his output slender, he is considered one of the finest English lyric poets of the 18th century. Pastorals , he composed his four Persian Eclogues (1742; 2nd ed., Oriental Eclogues , 1757), the only one of his works to be esteemed in his lifetime. In 1744 he published his verse Epistle: Addrest to Sir Thomas Hanmer on his Odes Odes on Several Descriptive and Allegorical Subjects The standard edition of his poems, The Poems of Thomas Gray, William Collins, Oliver Goldsmith (1976), was edited by Roger Lonsdale. Another member of the Graveyard School , Collins was influenced by his friend and fellow boneyard boy Joseph Warton and by James Thomson , another Graveyarder. Collins began publishing poetry in his late teens and spent much of his life struggling to succeed as a writer. His major publication, Odes on Several Descriptive and Allegorical Subjects (1746), met with little success; Collins' work was out of the poetic mainstream in its exploration of more powerful emotional and psychological effects. Quite possibly afflicted with some sort of mental instability later in life (perhaps depression), Collins was largely forgotten by the time of his death. But the changing cultural currents of the late C18 turned in his favor. He came to be romanticized (by the Romantics, appropriately enough, especially Hazlitt and Coleridge) as a "mad poet" who early death was itself poetically tragic; Collins also was widely understood to be, in his work, a precursor of many Romantic traits. As for his contributions to the Graveyard School, some of the odes linked below will explain....

Born in Chichester , the son of a hatmaker, he was educated at Winchester and Oxford . He moved to London in the and spent the last years of his life back in Chichester. His was a melancholy career. Disappointed with the reception of his poems, especially his Odes, he sank into despondency, fell into habits of intemperance, and after fits of melancholy, deepening into insanity, died a physical and mental wreck. Posterity has signally reversed the judgment of his contemporaries, and has placed him at the head of the lyricists of his age. He did not write much, but all that he wrote is precious. His first publication was a small vol. of poems, including the Persian (afterwards called Oriental) Eclogues (1742); but his principal work was his Odes (1747), including those to
