CUNY Sailing Alone Around the Room is rumored to have earned him a million-dollar advance. (Collins's publishers have confirmed that it was at least six figures.) If you've been following American poetry for the past six or seven years, you already know that he was poet laureate (2001-2003), his latest collection is The Trouble with Poetry, and that, like the current poet laureate, he advocates accessible poetry over 'difficult' poetry. Perhaps he has done more to demystify poetry for American readers than anyone, though without trivializing it. But less well known is the fact that Collins himself was once a 'difficult' poet who wrote from a place of inner torment, and only turned toward taking 'potshots' at poetry, as he calls it, when he felt he had nothing to lose. He once even wrote about politics, though one wonders if the persona he's evolved in his collectionswhich he describes as more like the real Billy Collins than anyone on earthcould handle as much today. [Interview by Joel Whitney] Some difficulty is warranted and other difficulty I think is gratuitous. And I think I can tell the difference.

Sailing Alone Around the Room Forced to pick a favorite in the first half of the book, this would be it: FIRST READER
I can see them standing politely on the wide pages
that I was still learning to turn,
Jane in a blue jumper, Dick with his crayon-brown hair,
playing with a ball or exploring the cosmos
of the backyard, unaware they are the first characters,
the boy and girl who begin fiction.
Beyond the simple illustrations of their neighborhood,
the other protagonists were waiting in a huddle:
frightening Heathcliff, frightened Pip, Nick Adams
carrying a fishing rod, Emma Bovary riding into Rouen. But I would read about the perfect boy and his sister even before I would read about Adam and Eve, garden and gate, and before I heard the name Gutenberg, the type of their simple talk was moving into my focusing eyes. It was always Saturday and he and she were always pointing at something and shouting, as he pushed a hand mower over the lawn, waving at aproned mother framed in the kitchen doorway, pointing toward the sky, pointing at each other.

Posted by Ajit on March 23, 2007 @ 8:24 am. We have mentioned Billy Collins videos before ( Forgetfulness The Country Recently, some videos based on his poems have had plenty of success. The ones presented by JWTNY feature Billy Collins reading his own work. The professional graphics for each poem come from a different artist. This is something that I have wanted to do for so long, take a poem and give it life. My favorite in the series is The Best Cigarette . Every beautiful line makes for an equally wonderful visual. The result is a stunning piece of filmmaking. If I had just read these lines, I would have missed much of the visual connections within the lines. The video never once leaves its smoky black and white imagery but it gives you all that you need to imagine the event that Collins is describing. Budapest is another perfect match of visuals and words. The visual style complimenting the playful and the absurd in the original. Others:

No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review , and The American Scholar , he is a Guggenheim fellow and a New York Public Library "Literary Lion." His last three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry. His readings are usually SRO, and his audience - enlarged tremendously by his appearances on National Public Radio - includes people of all backgrounds and age groups. The poems themselves best explain this phenomenon. The typical Collins poem opens on a clear and hospitable note but soon takes an unexpected turn; poems that begin in irony may end in a moment of lyric surprise. No wonder Collins sees his poetry as "a form of travel writing" and considers humor "a door into the serious." It is a door that many thousands of readers have opened with amazement and delight. Billy Collins writes lovely poems . . . Limpid, gently and consistently startling, more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are and were and some others besides.

    Lit Controversy : Billy Collins
This is a thread originally started elsewhere on the Internet regarding U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins and, more specifically, his collection Picnic, Lightning (Univ. of Pittsburgh Press, 1998). None of the opinions expressed here necessarily reflect or coincide with my own views. I am unable to assume any liability whatsoever regarding the authenticity of the names and e-mail addresses stated by the participants in the thread.
    Thread closed
The tendency revealed by the thread is clear: There are those who like Mr. Collins' poetry and there are those who don't – for reasons they have attempted to state here at this obscure website , as one of you wrote – and I'm afraid the twain shall never meet.
Thank you all for your time and effort.
One of my reasons for closing the thread is that there are too many departures from factual argument for my taste. The attempts to discredit people who are expressing a critical opinion by calling them whiners or snobs are puzzling and reminiscent of political mudslinging ahead of elections. But then again, I suppose, it could be said that Mr. E. Springsteen set the tone right from the start and should not be surprised by some of the response elicited. J.B.

Collins, Billy. The Apple That Astonished Paris. The University of Arkansas Press: Fayetteville/London, 1988. I had the pleasure of seeing Billy Collins read his work in 2000 at the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival in New Jersey, and again, recently, at the Library of Congress' National Book Festival. With the selection of Collins as Poet Laureate of the United States, I thought it would be appropriate for me to review one of his past collections of poetry, The Apple That Astonished Paris. Collins has a wonderful, dry wit that shines through many of his poems. It is even better to see Collins read his poems in person, and how he slyly deadpans his delivery of incredibly humorous statements. I highly recommmend seeing him read in person if you get the chance. Collins has gained quite a reputation as a highly "accessible" poet, meaning that his poems appeal to a wide audience. And perhaps this is one of the reasons why he was selected to be the new Poet Laureate, or poet of "the people."
