Hear Billy read this on NPR a while back and thought the video was very suiting. I liked it a lot. -Donna Loved the Billy Collins, Jet Blue, King Kong and Levis. Really inventive and impressive. Scruffs was a real throw-back/nothing new in that one AT ALL. -J. Dancoff Profound, beautifully written, and scary for those who recognize their own (or their parents') "senior moments" in this poem. -postmodern Powerful!!!! Seeing first hand what age and disease can take away from someone makes this piece scary and lonely, yet so poetic and peaceful. -Marcia Beautiful and poignant piece. -passepartout Best piece, is poetic, yes insightful and touching. When Asked HERE : What are some of the difficulties of having a seemingly accessible and clear style? Is that something you have to work on—revising the poem to its most lucid state? Billy Collins : Well, I think it’s more difficult to be clear than to be obscure. If you write with a certain, respectful level of clarity (I mean in sentences!), the reader sees what’s going on and can buy in or check out. If you write incomprehensibly, no one knows what’s going on and why should anyone care? Being difficult can be high fun as with Ashbery , but there is only one Ashbery. The rest of them (he said broadly) use language as camouflage. I’m not saying my ten-year-old daughter could write like a “language poet,” but that’s only because I don’t have a ten-year-old daughter. Post note: Do you understand most poetry? With a film crew trailing him to poetry readings, to college classrooms, to his office and his home, and even into his car, he manages to remain amazingly witty, gracious, and open in discussing his life, his work, and the nature of poetry itself. Interviews with distinguished poets and critics Edward Hirsch and Richard Howard, with Librarian of Congress Dr. James Billington, and with Random House editor Daniel Menaker lend new perspectives on Collins's achievement. This is also the first documentary to explore the cultural role of the U.S. Poet Laureate, a position that Collins held between 2001-03. I seek to rid the world of really bad poetry by reviewing some of the worst that I find ... on the filthy hive that is poetry.com. I'm a sort of "bad poetry superhero" if you will. This is my calling. This is my curse.
If you visit poetry.com, there's a link which provides you with real-time entries to poetry.com, a new one every 20 seconds**. Which is longer than most of these poems deserve. If you read too many of these poems in one sitting, you will get a headache akin to the feeling of a coyote gnawing on your skull. Elitism, Accessability, and Billy Collins
Collins takes some lumps from a lot of his peers for being a writer of "accessible" poetry. San Fransisco Chronicle columnist John Carroll, who admits that he is not a big reader of poetry himself, takes the time to ponder the question of accessibility, elitism, and place of Billy Collins in contemporary poetry.
For the record, Collins doesn't much care for the word "accessible" either, because it suggests "ramps for poetically handicapped people." He likes the word "hospitable." But he concedes that "accessible" has won the day, and he's happy with the side he finds himself on. "Some poems talk to us; others want us to witness an act of literary experimentation."

off the blue walls of this room,
moving as if underwater from typewriter to piano,
from bookshelf to an envelope lying on the floor,
when I found myself in the L section of the dictionary
where my eyes fell upon the word lanyard No cookie nibbled by a French novelist
a past where I sat at a workbench at a camp
by a deep Adirondack lake learning how to braid long thin plastic strips into a lanyard, a gift for my mother. I had never seen anyone use a lanyard but that did not keep me from crossing strand over strand again and again until I had made a boxy red and white lanyard for my mother. She gave me life and milk from her breasts, and I gave her a lanyard. She nursed me in many a sick room, lifted spoons of medicine to my lips, laid cold face-cloths on my forehead, and then led me out into the airy light and taught me to walk and swim

Billy Collins was born in New York City in 1941. He is the author of several books of poetry, including Nine Horses (Random House, 2002); Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems (2001); Picnic, Lightning (1998); The Art of Drowning (1995), which was a finalist for the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize; Questions About Angels (1991), which was selected by Edward Hirsch for the National Poetry Series; The Apple That Astonished Paris (1988); Video Poems (1980); and Pokerface (1977). A recording of Collins reading thirty-three of his poems, The Best Cigarette, was released in 1997. Collins's poetry has appeared in anthologies, textbooks, and a variety of periodicals, including Poetry, American Poetry Review, American Scholar, Harper's, Paris Review, and The New Yorker. His work has been featured in the Pushcart Prize anthology and The Best American Poetry for 1992, 1993, and 1997. Collins has edited Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry (Random House, 2003), an anthology of contemporary poems for use in schools. Collins has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1992, he was chosen by the New York Public Library to serve as "Literary Lion" and in 2001 he served as the U.S. Poet Laureate. For several years he has conducted summer poetry workshops in Ireland at University College Galway. He is a professor of English at Lehman College, City University of New York. He lives in Somers, New York.
