Joint Reading with NY State Author Russell Banks
"Moving from the position of United States poet laureate to New York State poet laureate might seem like a demotion or a drop in rank to the military-minded. It might even appear that I am heading toward eventually being crowned laureate of my zip code. But in fact, it is very gratifying to be honored again as a representative of poetry, this time by my native state where I grew upmore or lessand continue to live." - BC Billy Collins , former United States Poet Laureate for two consecutive terms (2001-2003), is one of America's best-loved and best-selling poets. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His readings are usually standing room only, and his audienceenhanced tremendously by his appearances on National Public Radioincludes people of all backgrounds and age groups. Author of seven collections, his poems are enjoyed by critics and readers alike for their plain language, friendly tone, intelligent humor, and profound observations about the meaning of everyday life. He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark that he barks every time they leave the house. They must switch him on on their way out. The neighbors' dog will not stop barking. I close all the windows in the house and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast but I can still hear him muffled under the music, barking, barking, barking, and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra, his head raised confidently as if Beethoven had included a part for barking dog. When the record finally ends he is still barking, sitting there in the oboe section barking, his eyes fixed on the conductor who is entreating him with his baton while the other musicians listen in respectful silence to the famous barking dog solo, that endless coda that first established Beethoven as an innovative genius.

The figure alone is enough to keep me wide awake,
the five with its little station master's belly
and cap with the flat visor, followed by the zero,
oval of looking glass, porthole on a ghost ship,
an opening you stick your arm into and feel nothing. I want to daydream here in the dark, listening
to the trees behind the house reciting their poems, bare anonymous beings, murmuring to themselves in lines that reach out like long branches in spring. I want my mind to be a sail, susceptible to any breeze that might be blowing across the lake of consciousness. But I keep picturing the number, round and daunting: I drop a fifty-dollar bill on a crowded street, I carry a fifty-pound bag of wet sand on my shoulders. I see fifty yearlings leaping a fence in a field, I fan the five decades before me like a poker hand. I try contemplating the sufferings of others, Rossini, for example, considered by many to be the Father of Modern Insomnia for his prolonged sleeplessness during the composition of the William Tell Overture But even a long meditation on the life of Brahms

    Irish Poetry by Billy Collins
That morning under a pale hood of sky I heard the unambiguous scrape of spackling against the side of our wickered, penitential house.
The day mirled and clabbered in the thick, stony light, and the rooks’ feathered narling astounded the salt waves, the plush coast.
I lugged a bucket past the forked coercion of a tree, up toward the pious and nictitating preeminence of a school, hunkered there in its gully of learning.
Only later, by the galvanized washstand, while gaunt, phosphorescent heifers swam beyond the windows, did the whorled and sparky gib of the indefinite wobble me into knowledge.
Then, I heard the ghost-clink of milk bottle on the rough threshold and understood the meadow-bells that trembled over a nimbus of ragwort— the whole afternoon lambent, corrugated, puddle-mad.

Call it a field where the animals
who were forgotten by the Ark
come to graze under the evening clouds.
Or a cistern where the rain that fell
before history trickles over a concrete lip.
However you see it, this is no place to set up the three-legged easel of realism or make the reader climb over the many fences of a plot. Let the portly novelist with his noisy typewriter describe the city where Francine was born, how Albert read the paper on the train, how curtains were blowing in the bedroom. Let the playwright with her torn cardigan and a dog curled on the rug move the characters from the wings to the stage to face the many-eyed darkness of the house. Poetry is no place for that. We have enough to do complaining about the price of tobacco, passing the dripping ladle, and singing songs to a bird in a cage. We are busy doing nothing - and all we need for that is an afternoon, a rowboat under a blue sky
