Reader-friendly hospitable congenial welcoming ... These are some of the words often used to describe Collins's work. Such attributes surely help explain his popular following. Among other vaguely heretical beliefs, America's former Poet Laureate insists that a poem should give pleasure on its first reading. Still, it's easy (and patently unfair) to make too much of how accessible Billy Collins's artful verse can be when in fact his seductive, hilarious, surprising, and expansive work appeals to the literary establishment, as well. "Billy Collins writes lovely poems," John Updike raves, "lovely in a way almost nobody's since Roethke's are. Limpid, gently and consistently startling, more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are and were and some others besides."

Undressing
Billy Collins By Michelle Mairesse
Billy Collins, America's former Poet Laureate, with his startling images and an antic disposition, wows audiences wherever he recites his quirky, funny, touching, contemplative poems . He cites Wordsworth as a major influence, but his approach to Wordsworth and other poetic icons of the past is rarely reverential. His impulse is to conflate or deflate. "Lines Composed Over Three Thousand Miles from Tintern Abbey," for example, parodies Wordsworth's nostalgia on revisiting old haunts and concludes:
Nothing will be as it was
a few hours ago, back in the glorious past
before our naps, back in the Golden Age
that drew to a close sometime shortly after lunch
In "Monday Morning" he steals the imagery of Wallace Stevens's magisterial "Sunday Morning" to describe a vacuous student, and in "Musée des Beaux Arts Revisited" he recasts Auden's stoic "Musée des Beaux Arts" as a surreal study in mental anguish.
In the racily titled "Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes" Collins ends his poem by assimilating Dickinson's sigh on being relieved of her confining nineteenth century undergarments with the sigh of readers who have been jolted by Emily's mind-expanding metaphors.
So I could plainly hear her inhale
when I undid the very top
hook-and-eye fastener of her corset and I could hear her sigh when finally it was unloosed

  • Novelists, playwrights, painters and others may hold in their heads the expectation of fame, but not poets. Having chosen that road, all one can dream of is the jealousy of one's rivals. Celebrity is unexpected and almost unseemlyit forces one to wear a constant look of chagrin, if that is possible. Unless you are Byron, who was the first poet to become a star. At its worst, fame means being known by strangersenough to bring on waves of paranoia. For the translator of poetry, there is no activity that brings you into a closer, more intimate contact with language, both the second language and your own language, which translation allows you to experience freshly. Of course, translation is the impossible art which is why it attracts often the best minds, at least those driven by difficulty. The best metaphor I know for translation is from my friend Eamon Grennan, who translated the poems of Leopardi. It's like walking in a clear mountain stream, looking at colorful stones in the water. You find one so gorgeous, you put it in your pocket, take it home and put it on a shelf. In the morning you are surprised that the stone looks so dull and without luster. You have the stone, but you have removed it from the water of its home language so it has lost its luster. It is important for the poet not to be emotional because you cannot see the world clearly with tears in your eyes.

I saw Billy Collins when he came to Boston College and the occasion marked one of the most special moments in my (albeit brief) lifetime. If you get the opportunity to see him, take it!
My favourite poems are 'On Turning Ten' and 'Love'. He is one of the poets I love best. John F (4/25/2006 2:50:00 PM)
I work with some people who have created some amazing animated poetry pieces featuring poems by Billy Collins. It's a series of 10 or so and they are very well done. It's Billy Collins himself reading the poems with animation used to bring them to life.

The Apple that Astonished Paris “But if something does flash before your eyes as you go under, it will probably be a fish, a quick blur of curved silver darting away, having nothing to do with your life or your death” states Billy Collins in his poem “The Art of drowning” ( www.bigsnap.com/billy.html ). Billy Collins’s poetry shines brighter than others due to the sarcastic yet funny style he uses to create his poems. Collins uses simplistic stanzas to try to create images that pull the reader away from real life and draw them into his poetic creation. Billy Collins’s cherished American poetry is featured largely throughout the United States. His poems rarely follow a significant topic; instead they are just thoughts that happen to pop into his head. Often, he uses poetry to offer relief in troubled times for himself and the reader. Billy Collins, a current teacher at Lehman College, was born in 1941 and has lived in New York City since his birth. Collins has completed fellowships at the New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and The Guggenheim Foundation. From day one, his talents as a writer shined through, as he was able to express his thoughts on paper well throughout grade school. Billy Collins doesn’t force meter or rhyme into his poems in order to draw the reader’s attention; instead he uses his witty descriptions and comedy. As quoted by Richard

Although critics have been divided over the literary merit of his poetry , its humor, wit, and accessible nature have made it widely popular. Billy Collins was born in New York City and grew up an only child in White Plains, New York. In 1962 he graduated from Holy Cross College in Massachusetts with a B.A. degree and then earned a Ph.D. degree in romantic poetry from the University of California at Riverside. He joined the faculty at Lehman College of the City University of New York in 1969, where he taught English and wrote poetry. In the 1970s Collins published poems in Rolling Stone magazine and helped start the literary magazine Mid Atlantic Review Collins’s early poems generally lacked the distinctive voice he would later develop. In the 1980s he moved away from the idea that the subjects and imagery of poetry should be obscure and began to write in clear, open language about ordinary things. Some of his subjects have included a dog barking next door and the experience of a full stomach after eating an Italian meal. After drawing the reader in with ironic wit and humor, his poems often end with a contemplative twist.
