Lovers and Children of the Natural Mystic: The Story of Bob Marley, Women and their Children
Meredith Dixon
Introduction The music genre of reggae has become indelibly linked with artist Bob Marley. To this day, nearly two decades after his death from cancer, Bob's legacy lives on in his popular songs of oppression, racial strife and resistance. Yet, his heritage is also carried on by the people who he touched. Like any rock star, famed musician or celebrity, women surrounded him wherever he went. "That Bob was not a one woman man was common knowledge," says Don Taylor, though Bob had been married to Rita Anderson throughout his climb to the top rungs of the musical ladder (Taylor). The purpose of this paper is to explore the details of Bob's marriage to Rita, his longstanding relationship with former Miss World Cindy Breakespeare, his trysts with other women, and the children that were born out of his sexual escapades and to look also at how Bob's behavior with women typified Rastafarian beliefs and customs. Bob's Marriage with Rita Alpharita Constantia Anderson was born in Cuba to Leroy Anderson and Cynthia "Bada" Jarrett. At the age of three months, Rita, as she was known, immigrated to Jamaica. After her parents relocated to Europe, the girl was raised by her strict aunt Viola on Greenwich Park Road in Trench Town, Kingston (Boot). It was here that Rita first encountered the trio of Bob, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer as they passed by her home while walking on their way to Coxsone One Studio. Rita had heard the Wailer's music but it was not until a friend accompanied her to the studio that she was officially introduced to the group. Once it was learned that Rita was a singer in addition to being a nurse, an audition was arranged immediately for her group, the Soulettes.

What is American About American Poetry?
Wanda Coleman
Are there essential ways in which you consider yourself an American poet? Yes. The same way in which I consider myself an American per se, more specifically, a Black American of slave descent, African in origin. When you consider your own "tradition," do you think primarily of American poets? No. My "tradition" (or psyche) is split [I prefer the expression "shattered"]. My "tradition" is a complex mishmosh of two basic traditions: 1) the best of Western Civilization, as taught in the Los Angeles school system of the 50s and 60s, Sappho and beyond. 2) the Afro-American blues/jazz musical tradition. Do you believe there is anything specifically American about past and contemporary American poetry? Is there American poetry in the sense that there is said to be American painting or American film? Do you wish to distinguish American poetry from British or other English language poetry? Yes, threefold:

Paglia's Forty-Three
So in between all the other things I've been reading I've got a signed copy of Ross King's The Judgment of Paris waiting along with The Meaning of Night and a great modern-day pillow book (this one British and written for the YA crowd), This Is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn I've managed to spend some time with Camille Paglia's Break, Blow, Burn in which she "reads" (i.e., explains) forty-three of the "world's best poems."
Hmmmm. Now I know the reading world can be roughly split up into two hemispheres: those who do poetry and those who don't. I'm definitely one who does poetry. So it's little surprise this book caught my eye (and that's despite its blinding pink wrapper). I wondered about the forty-three poems she selected and why just forty-three. As one who longs for numerological significance and symmetry, why not thirty-three? Or fifty?
I thought I'd find the answer in the Introduction, but no luck. I hate reading those under even the most ignorant of circumstances, and dare I say it, Paglia's reads a bit like a cover letter that would do nicely atop an application package for an English faculty post at Brown. (As it happens, she's a professor of humanities and media studies at the University of Arts in Philadelphia.)
