In addition to humorous songs like "You Never Even Call Me By My Name", a Steve Goodman/John Prine composition, he also includes references to himself in his songs to self-promote himself through his music. He references big stars of country music in his lyrics in a way that makes himself their equal, such as in "Willie, Waylon, and Me," and on the line "Johnny Cash helped me get out of prison" in "Longhaired Redneck." His long career has included twenty-six LPs , with 's Matter of Life... and Death

Leaving the project
Our engagements are all scoped out differently. Some for 1 week. Some for 3 weeks. Some for 7 months. We may get extended. We may not. At some point, we all come to the end of the engagement. We are often brought in for 1 of 3 reasons
1.) To help the customer get off old technology
2.) To jump start the project
3.) To work with the customer using new technologies Many times, success is not clearly defined. Oh sure, the success factors are stated in the contract. We meet some vague requirements. Even the customer (business and IT) will tell us that we met and/or exceeded expectations (well, most of the time). But there is a point where even if you are successful, your just not quite satisfied. Lets take my current engagement. I was brought in to help deliver "something" by June 30th. We delivered something May 30th. It wasnt an end-to-end solution, but we met the required end date. For me to be satisfied, I wanted to be able to finish the rest of the end-to-end solution on June 30th.

He has written and performed over 280 original songs throughout his long career. Known for his outlaw persona, Coe reputedly spent most of his youth in various prisons until releasing his debut album, Penitentiary Blues , in 1968 and touring with Grand Funk Railroad. In 1973 he joined Danny Sheridan's notorious Eli Radish Band . His concerts were wild and unpredictable, as Coe began calling himself the Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy and he wore a rhinestone costume and Lone Ranger mask, riding into concerts on a motorcycle. Coe finally hit the Top Ten with "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" in 1975. The song, written in conjunction with Steve Goodman, is known as "the perfect country and western song". It includes a narrative in which Coe explains that the perfect country and western song has to mention "Mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison, ... license: GNU FDL

    The Vibrator Queen
Well she ordered it from a magazine
I guess for about ten bucks
And it came by special delivery
in a plain brown cardboard box
Well she opened it and inspected it
(Someone in the audience yell¢â‚¬â„¢s ¢â‚¬Å“ How long was it¢â‚¬Â)
(David answered ¢â‚¬Å“ Bout twelve inches long¢â‚¬Â)
Well she went and dipped it in her Crisco can
    And turned that sum-a-bitch on
Well she hummed and a wiggled, squirmed and giggled Collapsed into utter pleasures (Chorus) She¢â‚¬â„¢s a Vibrator Queen She¢â‚¬â„¢s in love with a machine She swears it¢â‚¬â„¢s an American dream AC/DC try it and you¢â‚¬â„¢ll see It¢â‚¬â„¢s guaranteed to make you cream in your jeans Well she fell in love with what she had bought A 12 - inch wonder that the mailman had brought But through her love she could not see, What a terrible fate there was to be. Well she found her answer to all of her dreams In a battery operated sex machine Man nor beast could take it¢â‚¬â„¢s place She was destined to die with a smile on her face (Chorus) She¢â‚¬â„¢s a Vibrator Queen She¢â‚¬â„¢s in love with a machine She swears it¢â‚¬â„¢s an American dream AC/DC try it and you¢â‚¬â„¢ll see It¢â‚¬â„¢s guaranteed to make you cream in your jeans One day while she was in the bath She decided poorly

    (From Roctober #21, 1998)
Here's some opinions you can use, or discard, when flippin' through the record bins (or Dave's merch table) for David Allan Coe stuff. The reviewers are: JA-Jake Austen, B-Bosco, DD- Dave Donet, RF-Richard Fork, JW-Jeff Womack, JP-James Porter, WT-Waymon Timbsdayle. Penitentiary Blues (SSS International, 1969)
Requiem For A Harlequin (SSS International, 1973)
This sequel to "Penitentiary Blues" is again the notes of a Blues singing ex-con. However, what's striking about his album is the brutal, bleak, urban imagery. The sensitivity he is to display on his Columbia albums manifests itself more as perceptiveness, as he vividly describes "an asphalt jungle," filled with predatory junkies, whores and misfits. It's a concept album, exploring these themes to extremes, and it is more an album-lengthed poem than a conventional series of sung songs. This is one of the hardest to find DAC records, one of the most unusual, and it also has one of the best titles!(WT) The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy (Columbia, 1974)
