How Like a God
Brenda W. Clough
Tor, 1997, 287 pages, 32.95$Can., ISBN 0-312-86263-6 While "superpowers" are usually the province of comic book superheroes, Science Fiction also touches on the subject from time to time, usually from a much more "realistic" perspective. Compare Robert Silverberg's Dying Inside to any issue of the X-Men for a good shock. Brenda W. Clough seemed to be aware of this as she wrote How Like a God . It's the story of an ordinary husband, father and computer programmer named Rob Lewis who suddenly acquires the power to read and shape minds. Clough's protagonist makes several explicit references to the numerous comic books he had read at a younger age, while undergoing a descent through the lowest levels of society. Unfortunately

What's a simple hard working family man, who is the father of twins and married to a loving wife, to do when he finds himself the unsuspecting recipient of amazing powers? Sound like The Amazing Spiderman? Well you're not far off, even though How Like A God reads more like an epic than a comic book. Rob Lewis, computer programmer and unsuspecting superhero, wakes up one morning with an ability to read and manipulate minds. Armed with this new power and the best intentions, Rob soon learns that righting wrongs and dispensing justice isn't as easy as it seems, and things go from bad to worse when his new ability tips out of control and harms his family. Running from himself, Rob becomes a derelict in New York City, but isolation is no cure and its up to Rob, with a little help from a microbiologist, to find a way to control this absolute power, control himself, and return to his family With How Like a God , Brenda Clough leads us through a twisty-turny story and it's these shifts in direction that help make the unbelievable premise fit the very believable characters. It's Clough's generous examination of the moral and ethical issues surrounding power which make this fantasy a success.

Bush honors Stanford cadet at White House
Top ROTC scholar, markswoman becomes an Army Lt.
May 18, 2007 By James Hohmann Diana Clough ‘07 was not supposed to be commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army until next month. But then Lt. Col. Shari L. Corbett, the commander of Santa Clara University’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) detachment, received a phone call asking if Clough could make it to Washington, D.C. for a Thursday ceremony at the White House with the president. Less than 10 hours later, Clough was on a red-eye flight from San Francisco to Washington. Yesterday, in an elegant East Room ceremony, President George W. Bush welcomed her and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates swore her in as an officer in the world’s most powerful military force. “Seeing the president walking down the hallway toward us was just amazing,” Clough said. “Everyone probably felt like they were going to faint. It was cool to be within arm’s reach.”
