Interview: Brenda W. Clough
Brenda W. Clough is the author of The Crystal Crown, The Dragon of Mishbil, The Realm Beneath, The Name of the Sun, An Impossumble Summer, How Like A God and The Doors of Death and Life Donna Farley , Patrick McGuire, Shannon McNear Greg Slade , Rae D. Stabosz, and Tony Zbaraschuk asked the questions, and here is an edited version of the question and answer sequence. You can learn more about Brenda from her web page at www.sff.net/people/Brenda
GS: Where were you born?
Washington DC, not far from where I'm living right now. For some reason you meet very few people, even in the Washington area, who were born in Washington. Everyone comes here from somewhere else. And what happens to all the babies who are born in Washington DC? I don't know. Maybe they all move to Minnesota.
GS: Where did you go to school? What did you take in school, and why?
I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh PA, with a major in English and Creative Writing.
GS: What is your family situation? (Married? Kids? 1.7 dogs?)
I am married and have two children and four cats. My son is in high school and my daughter is in college. The cats are not educated but pretend to be very wise.

    8. Brenda W Clough: May Be Some Time - An Infinity Plus Review
a novella by brenda W clough (published in Analog, April 2001, $3.50.) Rating A , maybe A+ . The best man out of time story ever?

    May Be Some Time
a novella by Brenda W Clough
(published in Analog , April 2001, $3.50.) Rating: "A", maybe "A+". The best 'man out of time' story ever? Captain Titus Oates, a member of Robert Scott's 1912 British Antarctic expedition, is best known for his last words: "I am just going outside and may be some time." Thus doubly qualifying himself to star in Clough's wonderful new time-rescue story [ note 1 Capt Oates awakes in 2045 to the attentions of two ministering angels.... One, Dr Shulamith 'Shell' Gedeon, takes him for a walk in the park. Titus is taken aback at 21st-century female attire: "Even the street beggars in Calcutta didn't go about bare to above the knees... If they allowed women to become doctors, surely it was not a very much further descent to let in whores?" [ note 2 ] Titus asks Shell, "How did you ever become a doctor? A nigger, a Jew and a woman!" Whack! Yes, he's off to a fine start in 21st century couth and romance.... Which is the best part of "Time" seldom have I read such a convincing and consistent evocation of a man out of time. The backstory's fun too Oates was rescued as a proof-of-concept from a successful SETI decryption of plans from the alien 'Forties', who may have given humans an FTL star drive which of course can also be used as a time-machine.

This is the latest version of the Program. We think it is fairly close to what will actually happen at-con, but There Will Be Changes! As always, we can't promise that any of these items will actually happen or that the people listed will actually be at the con or on the particular program item. But we think this bad weather, illness, travel disuptions, giant meteor impacts or the like not withstanding is pretty close to what will really happen. Check Helmuth for late-breaking changes. This is the last version we will be posting before Boskone! We hope to see you there!

DETECTIVE #840: A Very Short Review
Paul Dini has written -so- many better stories about Batman. This one feels like filler, like they made him write something, anything, so as to round out that trade paper edition. (Don't invest in it; buy a FABLES instead.) The situation is wrong on so many levels that I cannot summarize them all here. To have Ra's (semi)permanently in Arkham completely trashes his foreign mystique; his (re)defeat in one issue makes all the earlier issues of the arc seem silly (or even sillier); his albino look is yukky; how can he run his Assasins drugged in a basement? And, finally and worst, what is this, Batman railroading someone into a loony bin under false pretences and heavy drugs? Is he not the Dark Knight, creepy but chivalrous? What happened to habeas corpus, the rule of law, the precepts of the American Pharmaceutical Association? What next, genital electrodes, hoods, and guard dogs in the Batcave? The most comforting view is to consider this issue out of continuity upon publication. Eminently skippable.

Terror and mutiny on Earth's hellish twin Venus
By Ben Bova Tor Books $24.95/$36.95 Canada Hardcover, April 2000 ISBN 0-312-87216-X Review by Mark Wilson on't be fooled by the innocent twinkle that rises in the morning sky. Venus is the Inferno: Its pressure-cooker atmosphere and slow rotation under the hot sun keep surface temperatures near 450 degrees Celsius. Venus is perdition, swathed in hurricane-speed storms of virulent acid. Venus is hell. No one knows this better than Van Humphries, the weak and unloved second son of rapacious conglomerate head Martin Humphries. When his beloved brother, Alex, died on a doomed expedition to Earth's torrid sister planet, Van lost part of himself. So Martin's announcement of a $10 billion reward for Alex's recovered remains, together with a sudden end to Van's stipend, jolts Van into unaccustomed action. He mounts his own Venus mission. Van's irresolution and lack of training, combined with a banshee captain imposed by his interfering father, make Van feel like a third wheel on his own ship. But things change drastically as he and his crew enter Venus's acid-cloud atmosphere and discover bizarre microorganisms living there. This galaxy-rocking discovery turns calamitous as the crew realizes these creatures are eating the hull. They fights in vain to save the ship, and end up having to try a dangerous transfer to the other ship vying for the prizethe
