Anchor, 10News Live At 6:30 p.m., 10News Live At 11 p.m.
"What I enjoy most about my job is learning something different every day I meet new people, see new places—that's very rewarding." Hal Clement goes the extra mile to discover something new, whether it involves traveling with the first American baseball team to visit China, or uncovering unfamiliar parts of San Diego. Hal's stories are not likely to be seen anywhere else. That's one reason why the popular anchor has won 11 local Emmy awards and 4 Southern California Golden Mike awards for his news coverage. Hal takes great pride in writing, editing, and compiling news stories, and he brings the same dedication to serving the San Diego community. He sits on the Special Olympics Board of Governors, and has hosted the San Diego Hospice Annual "Light Up A Life" Event for several years. He has also co-hosted The Children's Hospital Miracle Network Telethon. Hal's wife, Patty, is a bereavement counselor. They have two daughters: Stacey and Brooke. When Hal finds free time, he enjoys riding horses, golfing and whitewater rafting.

    Clement, Hal (1922-2003)
Mesklinites on Dhrawn, the dark companion of Lalande 21185 American science fiction writer (real name Harry Clement Stubbs) and college physics teacher, with degrees in astronomy and chemistry, who speculated in detail about the intelligent life-forms that might evolve on a world of extremely high gravity (see gravitational life ). His books Mission of Gravity Close to Critical (1964), and Starlight (1971), explore the biology and physics of a giant, rapidly-spinning planet, Mesklin, whose effective gravity varies from 3 times (at the equator) to 700 times (at the pole) that of the Earth. Also described in Close to Critical g gravity (Mesklin's equatorial value). The title refers to water's critical point which Tenebrae dips below at night causing immense raindrops to form. Robert Forward presents an even more extreme setting than Mesklin for gravitational life in his Dragon's Egg and Starquake

SCIENCE FICTION When one reads Clement's (born Harry Clement Stubbs) work you can't help but think that he could be the progenitor of the more famous SCI-FI writers we all know, like Arthur C. Clark and Issac Asimov. He shares the similar backgound of many authors who've hit thier stride in the mid-section of the last century, he has a scientific background ( B.S. in astronomy from Harvard, and a Masters in Chemistry) as well as a military tint from his tour as a pilot in WWII. His stories have the feel of the classic 50's-60's work where you can envision the space craft as almost silvery, cigar-shaped rockets that land on it's fins. It also deals with the concept of technology versus religion on a subconscious level as well as perhaps a touch of the Twilight Zone feel with hidden meanings that make you sit down and think about what you'd had read. There is also that aura of the cold war in the background that tinges how societies are run in the future that stamps Hal's work in the period it came from. At least in the short stories, they seem to deal with a military presence or large governmental systems in dealing with the issues of space and the phenominums found there. The bulk of his work deals with the way-faring space stories full of the imagery like the movies

    Virtual Marginalia
    Book title: Half Life
    Author: Hal Clement
    Posted May 15, 2002
I wanted to like this book. It has everything I like in sci-fi: action, politics, and biological Armageddon. But I didn't like this book. Half Life is set against a background where Earth is in crisis. For 200 years, new diseases have been ravaging the planet. After imploding, the population continues to decline to the point where the sick out-number the healthy. Basic biological research is seen as the only hope for survival of the species. Multiple and on-going efforts are organized to try and untangle the whys and hows of life, in the desperate hope that some clue will lead to a solution to the pandemic. As part of that effort, a mission to Titan is organized to search for pre-life (why Titan? Who knows. It's not really explained). Of a crew of 50, only 2 are healthy, and over half are expected to develop one of the new forms of Alzheimer's before the end of the mission. The story is fast-pacedalmost too fast. Scenes shift quickly with little transition. I had to reread many sections because I lost track of who was doing what. Furthermore, the characters are interchangeable with no real personalities and only their specific illness and job distinguishing them from one another. The presentation of the biological and chemical components of the story is difficult to slog through. There are two possible reasons for this: either the material is over my head or it is inadequately explained. Clement has an M.S. in Chemistry so the former is possible, even though I am a reasonably well-educated person. However, either reason results in an unsatisfactory reading experience.
