    Samuel L. Clemens
by Josh Coulter, 8th grade Samuel was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida Missouri, but grew up in Hannibal Missouri. Samuel went by the name Mark Twain. He wrote the books "Adventure of Huckleberry Finn," and "Adventures of Tom Sawyer." Samuel's books of boyhood on the Mississippi River were written in part from his own experience. Samuel grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, on the banks of the Mississippi, and later worked as a riverboat pilot. He chose Mark Twain as his pen name because that was the phrase river men yelled out to indicate that the river was two fathoms deep enough for riverboats.

" Charles Dickens Tavistock House, London ", Nov. 7, 1857, to fellow author HENRY GARDINER ADAMS (1812-1881), making arrangements for a reading of his most durable and beloved tale "A Christmas Carol". In part: " ...Although the Deputation you did me the honor to present to me at Gad's Hill, did not appear to have a very lively faith in their President, their President thought it right to hold out no hopes that might be fallacious, and to reserve to himself his secret justification of a better faith. Accordingly, I have since tried...so to disentangle myself from other promises...as to be able to read my Carol for my Rochester and Chatham Institution. I am now able to tell you that I will do so for you, please God, on any evening in the week before this next Christmas Day...that may suit you best. As soon as you can determine, please do so... ". Dickens evokes his typically self-effacing manner in this fine letter, referring to himself as the "President" of the Rochester and Chatham Mechanics Institute, for whom Adams was Honorable Secretary. Dickens indeed read his famous tale at the Institute on Dec. 22, 1857. Published in

    Mark Twain in His Times
    By Bonita Wilson
Corporation for National Research Initiatives Several weeks ago, I enjoyed a biography of Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. "Mark Twain", that was broadcast on one of the local public television stations. It brought back memories of my first exposure to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which my fourth grade teacher, Miss Sleeper, read aloud to us, one chapter each day. How I looked forward to each installment! Thus, I was delighted last month to learn of the resource-rich and well-designed online collection, Mark Twain in His Times , which is D-Lib Magazine 's featured collection this month. Originally, Dr. Railton mainly focused on digitizing and organizing primary material about Clemens and making it available on the Web, but feedback from his students and others brought the realization that the Internet offers advantages for "re-presenting" those materials in a more interactive way. Consequently, his goal has expanded to include not only building a permanent electronic archive of primary materials but also an evolving, interactive, virtual exhibition. Dr. Railton describes the collection as an archive that contains a growing number of searchable primary texts including: Mark Twain's works, contemporary reviews, advertisements, and so on, and as an ongoing experiment using the capabilities of computers to help people explore the meaning of a writer's achievement. The archive contains several different kinds of interactive displays:

"Does anyone know where Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was when the clock struck midnight on December 31, 1899?"
My American History professor asked us this riddle today in class. He didn't provide any additional information. No one knew, and he refused to tell us. My first instinct that he was dead, so where ever he is presently buried, but alas no, he died in 1910. Then I thought it could be a vague allusion to some of his work, but I asked and, no he is asking the man's actual physical location.
I've been in the library all afternoon reading Twain biographies, but no luck. So has any one ever heard this riddle, or failing that, does anyone know where I could find out? Was a Twain diary ever published? posted by FearAndLoathingInLJ to grab bag (24 comments total) It's nothing about his biography. It's one of those mental puzzles the answer is deducible from the qeustion somehow, and it's probably something about the turn of the century.
