SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN) (1835-1910)
by John White Alexander (1856-1915) Better known by his pen name, Mark Twain, satirist Samuel Langhorne Clemens spent much of his youth in Hannibal, Missouri, the Mississippi River town that was to inspire such successes as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Born in western Pennsylvania, John White Alexander moved to New York City in 1875 to work as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly . After further artistic training at Munich's Royal Academy, he returned to New York in 1881, where he taught, worked as an illustrator, and made a name for himself as a portraitist. In 1891 he moved his family to Paris, where he may have first met Clemens, for it is known that he undertook a portrait of the writer's daughter in this city sometime between 1898 and 1900.
The precise circumstances of Clemens's sittings are not known, but Alexander did remain in contact with the author after he returned to New York in 1902, for he was invited to the writer's seventieth birthday party in 1905. Oil on canvas, circa 1902

A short story by Mark Twain
Eve's Diary
Translated from the Original SATURDAY.I am almost a whole day old, now. I arrived yesterday.
That is as it seems to me. And it must be so, for if there was
a day-before-yesterday I was not there when it happened, or I
should remember it. It could be, of course, that it did happen,
and that I was not noticing. Very well; I will be very watchful now,
and if any day-before-yesterdays happen I will make a note of it.
It will be best to start right and not let the record get confused,
for some instinct tells me that these details are going to be
important to the historian some day. For I feel like an experiment,
I feel exactly like an experiment; it would be impossible for a person
to feel more like an experiment than I do, and so I am coming to feel convinced that that is what I AMan experiment; just an experiment, and nothing more. Then if I am an experiment, am I the whole of it? No, I think not; I think the rest of it is part of it. I am the main part of it

The Samuel L. Clemens Center
The Clemens Center opened in 1925 as Keeney's Theatre, a 2,363 seat vaudeville/movie house. A 1950's "modernization" of the auditorium, which was then primarily a movie house, resulted in draping and other acoustical treatments as well as a name-change to the Elmira Theatre; it closed in 1977. The Samuel L. Clemens Performing Arts Center was formed as a result of a community effort, named after Elmira's adopted son, who wrote and is popularly known under the name of Mark Twain. He married a local woman and spent 20 summers in Elmira writing at the family's summer home. The Clemens Center was reopened in 1977 after a renovation which resulted in a seating capacity of 1,650 and became suitable for live performance by removal of drapes and other treatments which deadened the room. The theatre is once again home to Broadway musicals, classical concerts and a wide realm of popular entertainment for the Southern Tier of New York State.
The Instrument
The organ at the Clemens Center has undergone several trials by water; subsequent renovations have resulted in an instrument quite different from its debut in 1925. The organ was built by the Marr & Colton Company of Warsaw, NY and originally consisted of a three manual console controlling 20 ranks in three chambers (Left, Right and Echo). The stop unification was somewhat limited and seven of the 20 ranks were on "straight" ventil chests.

The Formation of Samuel L. Clemens' Library Alan Gribben In 1879 a newspaper article about the misfortune of Dr. William Dindorf, a learned man compelled by a reversal of fortunes to sell his private library in Leipzig, caught the attention of Samuel Clemens; he clipped the story and pinned it to the rear endpaper of the notebook he was then using. This same document, Notebook 17, contains his notes for a tale about "the auction of a poor scholar’s library." Appendix E of A Tramp Abroad (1880) is the apparent result: there Mark Twain relates a mock German legend concerning the threatened library of Dr. Franz Reikmann, a "venerable scholar" who "had been all his life collecting his library, book by book, and he loved it as a miser loves his hoarded gold." In the dénouement, two benevolent twin brothers—a pair of Mark Twain s recurrent mysterious strangers—intervene to rescue the books by inflating the bidding and then presenting both the library and the money to an astounded Reikmann. That a newspaper clipping could stir such empathy within Clemens suggests the value he actually placed upon his own library. Though he certainly did not imagine himself a scholar, he nonetheless knew the thrill of procuring a long-sought-after volume. "Use with care, for it is a scarce book," he admonished on the title page of Henry H. Breen’s

Samuel Langhorne Clemens , popularly known as Mark Twain, was born November 30 , 1835 in Florida, Missouri and spent his childhood in nearby Hannibal . Twain is best known for the novels set in his boyhood world beside the Mississippi River, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and his masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn As a young man, Clemens worked as a typesetter for his brother Orion's newspaper before following his dream of navigating the Mississippi on paddle wheel steamboats . He piloted boats for three years until the outbreak of the Civil War stopped river traffic in 1861. Clemens joined his brother in Nevada where Orion had been appointed Secretary of the Territory. Roughing It , first published in 1872, is Clemens's account of his journey. In the

Mark Twain
It was in the West that Samuel Clemens became Mark Twain, and although the landscape and characters of frontier life play only a small part in his writings, one can always detect a tang of the region where he found his literary voice and identity in his distinctively colloquial style. Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri, in 1835, and grew up in nearby Hannibal, on the Mississippi River. His father died in 1847, leaving the family with little financial support, and Clemens became a printer's apprentice, eventually working for his brother, Orion, who had set himself up in Hannibal as a newspaper publisher. After a year spent setting type for newspapers on the east coast, Clemens returned in 1854 to rejoin Orion, who by this time had moved on to start a paper in Keokuk, Iowa. Through all his years in the printshop, Clemens tried his hand at composing humorous pieces, using the heavy-handed techniques of local colorists who were popular at the time. By 1856, he was accomplished enough to receive a commission from the Keokuk
