Beverly Cleary (born April 12, 1916) is the author of over 30 books for young adults and children. Her characters are normal children facing challenges that many of us face growing up, and her stories are liberally laced with humour. Some of her best known and loved characters are Ramona Quimby and her sister Beatrice ("Beezus"), Henry Huggins, and Ralph S. Mouse. Beverly Cleary was born Beverly Atlee Bunn in McMinnville, Oregon. When she was 6, her family moved to Portland, Oregon, where she went to grammar and high school. She was slow in learning to read, due partly to her dissatisfaction with the books she was required to read and partly to an unpleasant first grade teacher. It wasn't until she was in third grade that she found enjoy ...more [close] Beverly Cleary (born April 12, 1916) is the author of over 30 books for young adults and children. Beverly Cleary
Los Angeles Times on her enduring fondness for the books of Beverly Cleary. Click here to read it.
I haven't reread Cleary's tales about Ramona and Beezus Quimby since childhood though they were certainly favourites back then. I do periodically return to her YA books Fifteen and The Luckiest Girl though. I suspect that these books are too innocent for today's sophisticated YA readership, but I love them still. And I highly recommend Cleary's two-volume memoir, A Girl From Yamhill and My Own Two Feet . The memoirs are a particular treat for Cleary fans of course, but will also be of interest, I think, to anyone intrigued by how writers and books are formed. Posted by Kate S. at 10:56 AM

Thank you for a lovely reminder of some of my best friends growing up - Ramona, Henry, Ribsy, etc... I thoroughly enjoyed Hamilton's article and look forward to reading her memoirs thank you for the recommendation! After blogging about adult classics at bookclubclassics.com the past two months, I loved reminiscing about some of my favorite childhood classics... 12/09/2007 2:00 PM

In the Land of Beverly Cleary
I am moving to Oregon. I love the trees, I love the river, the bridges, the city, the neighborhoods, the bookstores, the valley, the people... it's my kind of place.
Here is A Children's Place. It's where we're headed on Monday morning. I nearly give Dependable Cousin Marcia a heart attack as we ride through a bungalowed neighborhood on the way to A Children's Place Books... "Stop!" I shrieked. "Stopppppppp!"
I leap out of the car (yes, I do), and run to the street sign and snap this picture. Which house? I wonder. In which house did Beverly Cleary set her stories? At dinner the night before Eric Kimmel had offered to take me to the park so I could pay homage to Ramona, my hero, but I knew time was too tight for a pilgrimage today.
Marcia, in the meantime, stares at me as if I've lost my mind. "What are you doing?"

EMMA ROBERTS IS OUR NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON FOR DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (D.E.A.R.) DAY!
16-year-old actress Emma Roberts, star of Nickelodeon's hit comedy series Unfabulous and the upcoming Warner Brothers Pictures’ Nancy Drew , is the new face of family literacy. As the newly inducted spokesperson for the second annual National "Drop Everything and Read" Day (or D.E.A.R Day) on Thursday, April 12th, Roberts succeeds Ramona Quimby, Beverly Cleary’s most popular children’s book character, as the reading initiative’s primary advocate, and invites families across the country to "drop everything...and read!"
D.E.A.R. Friend,
I put D.E.A.R. in all capital letters on purpose to get your attention. This Web site is about National Drop Everything and Read Day . D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything and Read—get it?
I got it ever since I was eight and we started having D.E.A.R. time at my school. D.E.A.R. is a lot of fun and because I know so much about it, librarians ( Association for Library Service to Children ), teachers (
