Children of all ages may vote for their favorite from a list of nominated books Nominations include books targeted to the interest of 2nd and 3rd graders.
History:
The Beverly Cleary Children's Choice Award, sponsored by Oregon Educational Media Association, (OEMA), was established in the spring of 2002.
Rationale:
The purpose of this award is to encourage reading by highlighting good quality literature (fiction and nonfiction) written on the second - third grade reading level, taking into account text, format and the illustrations of the books. This contest will encourage books that students may not otherwise find on their own and are not necessarily the popular best sellers.
Timeline:
The Book Selection Committee meets in the spring after reading all of the nominated books. Titles may be nominated by students, teachers, librarians or other interested people. The committee is composed of school and public librarians, teachers, and others interested in Children's literature. 5-10 books are selected for the yearly nominations list. The list will be made available in the spring of each year.

Thus began the author's lifelong love of books. Her family moved to Portland when Beverly was six years old; she was delighted to find a large public library. Beverly went on to study library science at the University of Washington in Seattle and became a children's librarian. In 1940, she married Clarence Cleary. For fifty years, Beverly Cleary has continued to delight young readers with her humorous, yet realistic, stories about the ordinary lives of children. While the author has written books for children as young as three and for teenagers, the bulk of her books have been written for children eight to twelve years old. Cleary has written more than 30 books. Her books have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

    LIFE
Beverly Bunn was born on an Oregon farm in 1916, but the family subsequently moved to Portland, where she grew up, experiencing the Depression during her teenage years. Although she loved reading, she was initially assigned to the poor-readers’ group when she began attending school; a part of the problem, Jim Trelease writes , was that she found the classroom reading matter “so dreadfully dull.” She was influenced to read again when she encountered a series of books about twins from different countries that actually had a story.
She moved to California to attend college and met her future husband while attending the University of California at Berkeley. She then returned north, studying to be a librarian at the University of Washington, before being married in 1940.
While working as a librarian and earlier in her life, Cleary had wondered at why so many children’s books presented a child’s life differently from the way she experienced it. She wanted books that spoke about ordinary children’s lives, and in 1950 wrote and published Henry Huggins , an attempt to do just that; the book was a success and started her on a writing career that has led to more than 30 books in the past half century.

    Beverly Cleary Researcher: Christen Shaw
Beverly Bunn was born in McMinnville, Oregon on April 12, 1916. She spent her early childhood on a farm in Yamhill, Oregon, a town so small it didn't even have a library. Beverly's love for books began when her mother made an agreement with the State Library to have books sent to their town and to act as the local librarian. Beverly's family moved to Portland, Oregon when she was old enough to attend school. She had trouble reading, and found herself in the low reading group in her class. However, she worked hard and conquered the problem by the time she was in third grade. Since then, she has always been sympathetic towards children who have difficulty reading. In 1934 she moved to California and attended college, where she met her husband, Clarence Cleary. She graduated junior college in Ontario, California and the University of California Berkeley. She continued her education at the School of Librarianship at the University of Washington in Seattle. When she began working as a librarian as the children's librarian in Yakima, Washington in 1940, she found more inspiration in the children she met. She wanted to write books to which these kids could relate. She continued to work there until she and her husband moved back to California.

Beverly Cleary author Beverly Cleary, 90, is the beloved author of more than 30 books, including Ramona Quimby, Age 8; Dear Mr. Henshaw; The Mouse and the Motorcycle; and Henry Huggins . Ramona first appeared as a character in the 1950s. The most recent Ramona book, Ramona's World, was published in 1999. Authors and Illustrators home RIF: You had difficulty learning to read as a child. How did you overcome that? Beverly Cleary: I had a very wise mother. She always kept books that were my grade level in our house. One rainy afternoon I picked up a book to look at the pictures and realized I was reading and enjoying what I read. RIF: Did you read aloud to your children (fraternal twins)? Did they read your books? BC: Yes, I did read aloud to them. When I was a child, there was no TV and not everyone had a radio, so my mother read to us. When I was a mother, I was surrounded by distractions. But with twins, reading aloud to them was the only chance I could get to sit down. They loved being read to. I read them picture books until they were reading on their own. I had read them my books aloud before they were published. Other than that, I really don’t know if they read them or not.
