Beverly Cleary Beverly Cleary was born on April 12, 1916 in McMinnville, Oregon. She grew up in a small town city during the depression. Her teacher was mean in 1st grade so when she wasn't paying attention Beverly got punished. She did not like to read because the books were so boring. In the seventh grade, Beverly wrote a report on her favorite literary character. The teacher liked her story and said, "When Beverly grows up she should write children's books." Beverly remembers that as giving her a direction in life. One of her first jobs was in the children's section of a library. The kids that came to the library said that they wanted books that were more fun to read. Beverly saw that the books being published for kids weren't that good and thought she could do better. Beverly wrote lots of book that children loved and won lots of awards for them. She wrote The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Ralph S Mouse Ramona Forever. I think Beverly Cleary is an important woman in history because she wrote many books that kids liked to read. 1998, by Ginna, third grade

own story is as lively and irresistible as any of her novels. She was born Beverly Bunn in McMinnville, Oregon, and, until she was old enough to attend school, lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Her mother arranged with the State Library to have books sent to Yamhill and acted as librarian in a lodge room upstairs over a bank. Beverly learned to love books there.
Leaving Yamhill did not distress me, for home was wherever my parents lived. I looked forward to Portland, where I would have children close by to play with, school, a real teacher who would teach me to read. A Girl from Yamhill
When the family moved to Portland, where Beverly attended grammar school and high school, she soon found herself in the low reading circle, an experience that has given her sympathy for the problems of struggling readers. By the third grade she had conquered reading and spent much of her childhood either with books or on her way to and from the public library. Before long her school librarian was suggesting that she should write for boys and girls when she grew up. The idea appealed to her, and she decided that someday she would write the books she longed to read but was unable to find on the library shelves, funny stories about her neighborhood and the sort of children she knew.

She was the only girl assigned to the "blackbird" reading group, the lowest in that Portland, Oregon, first grade. How could such a thing happen? Why, her mother used to be a school teacher and had been surrounding her with books and reading since she'd been an infant. In fact, her mom had opened the first library in the little farm community they used to live in. She'd always told the girl that school was wonderful and so were books and reading.

Ramona Quimby is the beloved young heroine of Beverly Cleary's whimsical books about growing up in Northeast Portland. She has been immortalized in the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden for Children in Portland's Grant Park (which is four blocks from the real Klickitat Street). Portland artist Lee Hunt sculpted the statues of the three Cleary characters in clay, and then had them cast in bronze. Fountains are under Ramona's and Ribsy's feet, perfect for kids to splash in during warm weather. Around the concrete fountain slab are granite plaques engraved with the titles of the Cleary books that take place in Portland. These include all the Henry Huggins books, Ribsy Otis Spofford and all the books involving Ramona and her older sister Beezus. The dedication of the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden on October 13, 1995 was a great celebration! Over 1000 people came on a beautiful afternoon to see local actors in the roles of Henry, Ribsy and Ramona, unveil the three sculptures. Beverly Cleary spoke about growing up in the neighborhood and shared her memories of Grant Park and Grant High School in the 1930s. The sculpture garden is just south of the playground in Grant Park on N.E. 33rd Ave., between Knott Street and Broadway, adjacent to Grant High School. You can't see it from 33rd; you must actually come into the park to find the statues. The Portland Parks Department will turn on the water when weather and conditions permit.

Executive summary: Children's author, Ramona Quimby series The author of children's picture books as well as juvenile fiction and young adult novels, Beverly Cleary is best known for her stories about little Ramona Quimby, her big sister Beezus, and their neighborhood pal Henry Huggins. Other popular Cleary works include Runaway Ralph Ralph S. Mouse , and Mouse on a Motorcycle . Cleary won a Newbery Medal for her epistolary novel Dear Mr. Henshaw (1983). Two other books, Ramona and Her Father and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 , were named Newbery Honor books. In 2000, Cleary was named a Library of Congress "Living Legend". Born Beverly Bunn, she spent her early years on a farm outside Yamhill, Oregon, where her mother had started a small library. Although her mother had attempted to homeschool her, she had trouble learning to read as a child. She later confessed that much of her resistance arose from the fact that the books she was given were extremely boring. Most children's "literature" at that time still consisted of dry, stilted morality tales that adults considered "good for children". Beverly longed for more interesting children's stories, tales about kids more like herself and her neighborhood playmates. Later, a school librarian suggested that Beverly might write such stories herself some day. But it was when she became a librarian in rural Yakima, that urge to write children's stories really began to solidify. Children, many of whom reminded her of her own childhood playmates, would ask "where are the stories about kids like us?"

Ramona's World finds Ramona entering the fourth grade, longing for a best girlfriend, and still being happily disgusted by Yard Ape. BookPage had the delightful opportunity to talk to Newbery Medalist Beverly Cleary about her writing, her life, and her beloved Ramona Geraldine Quimby. Cleary became interested in writing for children because reading meant so much to her as a child. "I was a great reader of fairy tales. I tried to read the entire fairy tale section of the library: Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book, Red Fairy Book, and so on, probably down to the Puce or Chartreuse fairy tales," she laughs. These days, Cleary reads biographies and some fiction by English women writers.

But on a rainy day in third grade, Cleary had a life-changing experience. Out of boredom she began reading The Dutch Twins The Dutch Twins but The Swiss Twins as well. It was one of the most exciting days of my life." When Cleary became a librarian, she met children who were bored with traditional children's books, just as she had been. So she began writing a book of her own, the book that became Henry Huggins . When she finished the book, Cleary had an experience most authors only dream about: Her manuscript was accepted by the first publisher she sent it to. That was 50 years ago. Now she has many beloved books to her credit and is appreciated by young and not-so-young readers alike. In 1995, bronze statues of her three best-known characters, Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Henry's dog, Ribsy, were dedicated in a park in Portland, Oregon, where the young Cleary lived and where books featuring those characters are set. Beverly Cleary encourages young people who would like to be writers, but she also offers very practical advice: "If you're serious about becoming a professional writer, prepare to have some other way of earning a living. Many fine writers don't earn enough to live on. Read widely. Master the tools of writing. I know that spelling, punctuation, and grammar are boring, but they are necessary."
