Happy Birthday, Arthur C. Clarke!
By Jenna Wortham Categories: Books Celebrity Movies Space British science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke turns 90 on Dec. 16. Clarke penned the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was adapted into Stanley Kubrick's big-screen freaky fav. Clarke is also the last surviving member of the "Big Three" of science fiction authors (the other two members of the geeky coterie were Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein). Other fun facts (thank you, Wikipedia!) : the Command Center of the Apollo 13 craft was named "2001" after the movie, Clarke had a whole friggin' asteroid AND a new species of dinosaur Serendipaceratops arthurcclarkei named after him. Coolness. (And yes, you CAN sync Pink Floyd's Echoes to Dave's triptastic voyage scene at the end. Not that we've tried that or anything. But if we did, we'd say it rocks and that you should try it.) In celebration of our favorite authors and their books, we're asking

One historical dividing line in science fiction is between those who think technology offers a lot of "cool" things that better the human condition (Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov) and those who think the opposite (Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells and their New Wave descendants sprung from the loins of atomic explosions and countercultural indulgences). The cyberpunks melded both with the sort of Zen-like attitude that technology is neither inherently good or bad, it merely is what it is.

...After various false starts and twelve-hour talkathons, by early May 1964 Stanley agreed that "The Sentinel" would provide good story material. But our first concept, and it is hard now for me to focus on such an idea, though it would have been perfectly viable involved working up to the discovery of an extraterrestrial artifact as the climax, not the beginning, of the story. Before that, we would have a series of incidents or adventures devoted to the exploration of the Moon and Planets. For this Mark I version, our private title (never of course intended for public use) was "How the Solar System Was Won." So once more I went back to my stockpile of short stories, to find material which would fit into this pattern. I returned with five: "Breaking Strain" (from Expedition to Earth ), "Out of the Cradle, Endlessly Orbiting...", "Who's There?~', "Into the Comet", and "Before Eden" (all from Tales of Ten Worlds ). On May 28, 1964, I sold the lot to Stanley and signed an agreement to work on the projected movie.

Arthur C. Clarke Still in the News
One of the best known science fiction writers, Arthur C. Clarke, is still making news. As he celebrated his 90th birthday, he added fuel to the ongoing question of the existence of extraterrestrial life. Known best, and rich beyond belief for writing the 1968 masterpiece, "2001: A Space Odyssey," he has always had a vision of the future, and believed that man must look beyond his own planet for the answers to some of our most intriguing issues. Clarke used the premise that advanced civilizations did exist, and they were just waiting for the right time to intervene in our evolution, and take us to a higher plane of existence. The ground breaking movie has only gone to spawn many other movies, many of them pure science fiction, yet thought provoking, pushing mankind to see other possibilities beyond ourselves. WASHINGTON Noted space visionary and writer, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, believes that new images of Mars clearly show the red planet dotted with patches of vegetation, including trees. Such a find may help spark a far grander space program more aligned with the adventure and exploration portrayed in the epic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey - the collaborative work of both Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick. Clarke spoke last night, June 6, via phone from his home in Sri Lanka as key speaker in the Wernher von Braun Memorial Lecture series held here at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. Poring over images on his home computer taken by the now-orbiting Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), Clarke said that there are signs of vegetation evident in the photos. "I'm quite serious when I say have a really good look at these new Mars images," Clarke said. "Something is actually moving and changing with the seasons that suggests, at least, vegetation," he said. More Stories

ARTHUR C. CLARKE: THE SCIENCE AND THE FICTION
MISSED A PROGRAMME?
Go to the Listen Again page Heather Couper meets the man behind the ideas Wendesday 5 October 2005 11.00-11.30am  Sixty years ago this month, in October 1945, the magazine Wireless World published an article by a relatively unknown writer and rocket enthusiast. Its title was: "Extra-Terrestrial Relays: Can Rocket Stations Give World Wide Radio Coverage?" Today, the author's name is known throughout the world. He is the science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke, and his prediction of satellite communications has come true in ways even he never imagined. To mark the anniversary, Heather Couper travels to Sir Arthur's home in Sri Lanka to hear his own story. Arthur C Clarke speaks to the BBC in 1953 Today it is sometimes still referred to as the Clarke Orbit. It's that orbit in space, 36,000 km above the equator, where a satellite takes exactly 24 hours to orbit the Earth. So the satellite orbits at the same rate as the planet itself spins, seeming to hover over the same place on the equator.

Fiction or reality? With recent advancements in technology many people now believe it is possible to build a space elevator. This site will serve as a reference tool for those interested in exchanging ideas on the scientific, engineering, economic and policy challenges inherent in constructing the solar system's first space elevator. The Space Elevator: 'Thought Experiment', or Key to the Universe? (Part 1)
by Sir Arthur C. Clarke Abstract The space elevator (alias Sky Hook, Heavenly Ladder, Orbital Tower, or Cosmic Funicular) is a structure linking a point on the equator to a satellite in the geostationary orbit directly above it. By providing a 'vertical railroad' it would permit orders-of-magnitude reduction in the cost of space operations. The net energy requirements would be almost zero, as in principle all the energy of returning payloads could be recaptured; indeed, by continuing the structure beyond the geostationary point (necessary in any event for reasons of stability) payloads could be given escape velocity merely by utilising the 'sling' effect of the Earth's rotation. The concept was first developed in detail by a Leningrad engineer, Yuri Artsutanov, in 1960 and later by several American engineers quite unaware of Artsutanov's work. All studies indicate that the idea, outrageous though it appears at first sight, is theoretically feasible and that its practical realisation could follow from the mass-production of high-strength materials now known as laboratory curiosities.
