A Conversation With Mary Higgins Clark
By Claire E. White Born and raised in New York, internationally bestselling author Mary Higgins Clark is of Irish descent. "The Irish are, by nature, storytellers," says Clark, who considers her Irish heritage an important influence on her writing. Mary's father died when she was ten. Her mother struggled to bring up Mary and her two brothers. After graduating from high school, Mary went to secretarial school, so she could get a job and help her mother with the family finances. After working for three years in an advertising agency, travel fever seized her. For the year 1949, she was a stewardess on Pan American Airlines' international flights, to see the world. "My run was Europe, Africa and Asia," Mary recalls. "I was in a revolution in Syria and on the last flight into Czechoslovakia before the Iron Curtain went down. I flew for a year and then got married." She married a neighbor, Warren Clark. Nine years her senior, she had known him since she was 16. Soon after her marriage, she started writing short stories. She sold her first short story to

Monday, May 26, 2003 By Patricia Sheridan, Post-Gazette Staff Writer Best-selling suspense author Mary Higgins Clark has kept her loyal fans turning pages since her first mystery novel, "Where Are The Children?" was published by Simon and Schuster in 1964. Author Mary Higgins Clark. (Bernard Vida) But one of her most interesting books is her memoir, "Kitchen Privileges." It tells the tale of her humble beginnings in the Bronx, her mother's struggle to raise three children alone and her journey from secretarial school to flight attendant to internationally known author. She will be in Pittsburgh Thursday for the FRAXA Research Foundation's benefit gala at the Omni William Penn. Fragile X syndrome is the leading cause of inherited mental retardation and autism. For tickets to the event, call 724-625-3092. Q: What is your connection to Fragile X? A: Well, my grandson David is a Fragile X kid, and I've been very active with the Fragile X research ever since he was born. I go to the different cities when we are having an affair and have donated significantly to the research. We are all so eager to find a drug or vaccine that will help. My grandson was diagnosed early as an infant because the doctor was knowledgeable. You know, the Fragile X problem was only identified about 16 years ago. Q: After 40 rejection slips from publishers telling you you weren't good enough, what made you think you were?

Mary Higgins Clark:
Does your local library sell bags of books, the neighborhood yard sale offer some cheap reading? Try one of these murder mysteries. While My Pretty One Sleeps and a Stranger is Watching both by Mary Higgins Clark. While My Pretty One Sleeps, set in the Big Apple, reminds you that people are not always what they seem, even close friends. A Stranger is Watching is a book you definitely don't want to read late at night when you are home alone. The setting again is New York City and surrounding areas, even the most innocent people can be most crazy. Mary Higgins Clark, the best selling author of novels , including Where are the Children? and Weep No More My Lady . Born and raised in New York City. Pocket Books

    BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Mary Higgins Clark was always a writer, right? Actually, no. Mary Higgins Clark had many jobs before she became a writer. Some other jobs she had were an advertising assistant, a stewardess for Pan American Airlines, a radio scriptwriter and producer, and many jobs related to radio programming. When Clark was widowed, she started working as a radio scriptwriter and producer, and submitted short stories to woman's magazines. Radio writing taught her how to "write tightly." After the great success of her first book, Where are the Children?, Clark wrote more and more, and received many awards for her phenomenal books. Clark is a very talented author, and has delighted many over the years with her suspenseful, gripping mystery novels. There is a lot the public doesn't know about her. She was born on December 24, 1929 in New York City. Her parents were Luke Joseph and Nora C. Higgins. Her father was a restaurant owner, and her mother was a buyer. She married her first husband, Warren F. Clark in 1949. Warren and Mary had five children, Marilyn, Warren, David, Carol and Patricia. Mary Higgins Clark married her second husband, Raymond Charles Ploetz in 1978. (Hile, 10: 43) She received her education at the Villa Maria Academy, Ward Secretarial School, New York University and Fordham University. She graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts. (Chapman, 51: 109) Clark received many awards in her lifetime. She received the New Jersey Author award in 1969 for
