November 9, 1997 'Nowhere Wholly at Home' Amy Clampitt's poetry summons up bohemian New York and Quaker Iowa. Read the First Chapter By CHRISTOPHER BENFEY More on Amy Clampitt, from The New York Times Archives THE COLLECTED POEMS OF AMY CLAMPITT
Foreword by Mary Jo Salter.
471 pp. New York:
Alfred A. Knopf. $30.
my Clampitt's first book of poems appeared in 1983, when she turned 63. One consequence of her patience, or frustration, was that ''The Kingfisher'' seemed less like a typical first book with apprentice work, promising inklings and a few real achievements all jumbled together than a winnowed and weighed selected poems. Four other books, equally assured, followed in quick succession; the last, ''A Silence Opens,'' appeared in 1994, the year of Clampitt's death. With the passage of time, the wonder of Clampitt's late appearance in print and the poignancy of her quick departure from it will both recede, allowing readers to come to terms with the kind of poet she was, and is. After all, she published earlier infinitely earlier, one might say than two of her favorite poets, those posthumous prodigies Dickinson and Hopkins (whose great sonnet ''As kingfishers catch fire . . .'' gave her the title of her first book). And she received far more acclaim during her life than her beloved Keats, whose hectic and heart-rending travels she reimagined in her extended biographical sequence ''Voyages.'' A passionate traveler herself, this self-described ''child of the child of pioneers'' seemed to relish a certain social precariousness in her life. Born in the Quaker village of New Providence, Iowa, and educated at Grinnell, she retraced her grandparents' footsteps and headed east, like the turned-around turtle she described in the first poem in ''The Kingfisher'': ''it hove eastward, a covered / wagon intent on the wrong direction.'' The jobs she held in New York reference librarian for the National Audubon Society, as well as various positions in publishing make her seem at times like a Barbara Pym heroine, furtively writing poems and (as the poet Mary Jo Salter points out in her foreword) three unpublished novels at night while filing bird books by day.

    American poet.
    INTRODUCTION
Clampitt emerged on the literary scene in 1983 with the publication of The Kingfisher. Surprisingly, this first collection earned her a reputation as one of America's foremost poets. Her poems resonate with rich and varied language, and are filled with detailed images from classical literature. In her subsequent collections, What the Light Was Like Archaic Figure Westward (1990), and A Silence Opens 1994), Clampitt built on her reputation for virtuoso use of language, metaphors, and meticulous detail. Her intellectual language and construction have led to comparisons with Marianne Moore and Gerard Manley Hopkins. Those same qualities are also the most oft-cited flaws in Clampitt's poetry: at times her heavy language and ornamentation seem to overwhelm the subject.
