Sandra Cisneros Writer
Josephinum Academy, Chicago (1972) Writing on the Wall: Although her old neighborhood, Humboldt Park, served as inspiration for her seminal d©but novel, The House on Mango Street , American Book Award winner Sandra Cisneros can be dismissive, at best, when acknowledging her youth here. “If I’m an artist, it’s despite Chicago, it's despite Chicago, not because of it," she once told the Chicago Tribune. But those from her West Side, Catholic, all-girl alma mater, nicknamed the Jo, remember “Sandi” more fondly than she remembers the city: as someone earmarked for her way with words. “With Sandra, her passion was writing,” says her friend and former lab partner Zoila Garcia, who recently asked Cisneros if she had always known she would be a writer. Garcia says Cisneros responded, “No, I was [encouraged] by my teachers.” One of those teachers, Julie Kuzera, then an English instructor, recalls Cisneros as “a great student, but very shy, reserved, and retiring”—the polar opposite of Cisneros’s take-no-prisoners persona as an adult. “She didn’t volunteer any information. She was always very good at writing, but she probably didn’t appear to be the best in class because she was so quiet.” Kuzera says a senior-year stint as head of the school’s literary magazine helped build the budding writer’s confidence. The 1972 yearbook credits the magazine’s “excellence, fresh style and appeal, and modern format” to Cisneros’s editorship, and Garcia says, “One-third [of the magazine] was stuff she was writing.

Apologies to Sandra Cisneros
Spring 2006 Illustration: Katherine Streeter How ETS' computer-based writing assessment misses the mark By Maja Wilson At 27 years old, I was quickly becoming an English-teacher stereotype: Frizzy hair escaped my hastily secured bun, and my eyes had gone slightly wild from reading pile after pile of student papers. It was exam time during my first year of teaching high school writing courses. I'd been determined not to turn the mandatory finals into a multiple choice test, so I'd assigned a final revision and had given an in-class reflective writing assignment during the exam hour. But I had only one work day to read and grade the papers and reflective writings, calculate and submit semester grades, and prepare for my next round of courses. After toiling alone in my classroom, I had moved my piles of papers to the teachers' lounge in an increasingly futile attempt to preserve my sanity. Another teacher appeared, weighted down with her own stack of exams. "It's a lot of work, isn't it?" she empathized. She understood! But as she turned and began to feed her stack of papers into the Scan-Tron machine on the counter, my wan smile faded. "Sometimes I have to run these through two or three times to make sure there are no mistakes," she said, shaking her head, clearly not noticing that my eyes were now boring into the back of her skull.

Sandra Cisneros But I deal with this meditating and by understanding I've been put on the planet to serve humanity. I have to remind myself to live simply and not to overindulge, which is a constant battle in a material world. Sandra Cisneros I always tell people that I became a writer not because I went to school but because my mother took me to the library. I wanted to become a writer so I could see my name in the card catalog. Sandra Cisneros I don't see any kind of mirror of power, male power, that is, as a form of liberation. I don't believe in an eye for an eye. I don't believe this is truly freedom.

Motivation in Cisneros's "Never Marry a Mexican"
A Historical-Biographical Critical Approach
1999, Skylar Hamilton Burris Note: This is an academic exercise that takes a historical / biographical critical approach to Sandra Cisneros’s short story, "Never Marry a Mexican." This is not intended to be a well-developed critical paper, but it should prove a useful tool for examining one aspect In "Never Marry a Mexican," the narrator, Clemencia, admits that she is "vindictive and cruel" (68). But the critic must explain why. The critic also needs to address Clemencia's motivation for fleeing her middle-class home, because it is by no means clear that she was prohibited from living there. A look at Sandra Cisneros's own life and words can help elucidated both of these questions. Sandra Cisneros shares with her narrator a sort of "schizophrenia" that develops from "straddling two" cultures (Aranda 66). Clemencia, as a Mexican-American, witnesses her latino culture mixing with anglo culture, and she herself engages in miscegenation with Drew. She is motivated by a fear of anglicanization that expresses itself in her decision to move to the barrio and in her vindictive treatment of Drew's wife. The latino and anglo cultures mix when Clemencia's mother marries a white man. Clemencia reacts by fleeing from her home and attempting to cling to her latino culture. Sandra Cisneros describes her own hatred for the term "Hispanic" by declaring that it is an "upwardly mobile type word" (

    Nationality: American
    Ethnicity: Hispanic American
    Occupation: writer, college teacher
    BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
As the first Hispanic-American to receive a major publishing contract, Sandra Cisneros has provided a voice for she who had had none before, the Hispanic-American womanor to use Cisneros' favored wordthe chicana. "I'm trying to write the stories that haven't been written. I feel like a cartographer. I'm determined to fill a literary void," Cisneros told Jim Sagel of Publishers Weekly . In doing so, she speaks out against racism, sexism, poverty, and shame. Growing up a chicana in the poor barrios of Chicago, Cisneros knows these things well. She watched as the women around her gave up and gave in, accepting lives of second class citizenship, beholden to their fathers, their brothers, their husbands, and their priests. This wouldn't be Cisneros's fate. She escaped through language, writing her way out of that future. Along the way she has collected numerous awards and critical acclaim. The woman who proudly proclaimed she is "nobody's mother and nobody's wife," is in fact the greatest caregiver of all. She charts the map that shows chicanas and chicanos, women and wives, sisters and servants, the possibilities of freedom.

CARAMELO, the gorgeous new novel by Sandra Cisneros, begins with a portrait taken on a summer trip to Acapulco, one of those spontaneous group shots offered by photographers who comb the beach to record memories, real or manufactured. All of the members of the Reyes family are there…all except for Lala, the youngest, forgotten a few yards away as she happily makes sandcastles. And so Lala spends the rest of the book painting a portrait of her own.
It's impossible not to love an author who names her characters "the Awful Grandmother," "Aunty Light-Skin" and "Uncle Old." Cisneros's warm, wry humor has been on display since THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, and in her latest blended book (equal parts American and Mexican influence), she ensnares us again. This is Lala's story, first and foremost, but it's also the story of so many other things - of growing up in two cultures, of growing up in general, of family life and daily upheaval, of class and racial strife. The Reyes family travels south to Mexico City each summer to spend time with Inocencio's parents, his heavy-handed mother and henpecked father. Thirteen running, screaming kids caught between the Chicago culture of their daily lives and the Mexican roots of their parents. Three daughters-in-law left to stew in their own juices when mama's around. One hundred reasons why, we soon learn, everything is not OK.
