REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Chopin, Kate Chopin, SHOH pan, Kate (1851-1904), was an American novelist and short story writer. She was the first American female novelist to write frankly about women's feelings toward their roles as wives and mothers. Chopin's best-known novel, The Awakening (1899), deals with a woman who is dissatisfied with her passionless husband. The woman gradually gives in to her strong desires for other men and commits adultery. The novel focuses on the restrictions that social and religious institutions of the late 1800's placed on women. Chopin's novel was severely criticized for her realistic treatment of the subject of adultery.

Kate Chopin's "Lilacs" and the Story of the Annunciation
by Jacqueline Olson Padgett When the theologian Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza writes that the myth of the Virgin Mary "sanctions a deep psychological and institutional split" (59) among women in the Catholic tradition, she captures what Kate Chopin also captured in her story "Lilacs." There, sisterhood between secular and religious women appears fragmented and nearly impossible. To scrutinize the division, Kate Chopin fashions her story around the portion of the Virgin Mary myth told in St. Luke's gospel of the Annunciation of the birth of Jesus spoken to Mary by the archangel Gabriel. Working with that text, "Lilacs" mocks a tradition prizing virginity and separating the cloistered from the secular. Irony prevails, but so too does the sorrow born of religious restraint and condemnation. From the tension in the Annunciation between the virginal and the non-virginal comes ages of women divided from one another on the basis of chastity and divided internally into spiritual and physical selves. Chopin's "Lilacs" plays out this division on the grounds of a Sacred Heart convent and in the apartments of a Parisian mondaine to question whether a life almost wholly spiritual or a life almost wholly physical can be anything but the subject of ridicule. The narrator tempts us to enjoy the ridicule only to have us feel more painfully at the story's end the dolorous effects of con strained desire, effects which diminish both nun and secular woman.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Kate Chopin (1850-1904), American writer, known for her depictions of culture in New Orleans, Louisiana, and of women's struggles for freedom. Chopin was born Katherine O'Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1870 she married Oscar Chopin, a Creole cotton trader, and moved with him to New Orleans. After a business failure, the family moved to a plantation near Cloutierville, Louisiana, where her husband died in 1882. In 1884 Chopin returned to St. Louis with her six children. There she maintained a literary salon and began her writing career. For more than a decade following her first published story in 1889, Chopin depicted the manners, customs, speech, and surroundings of Louisiana's Creole and Cajun residents. Two collections of her short fiction were published in the 1890s:

A guest author essay on The Awakening by Kate Chopin
Leslie Poston Aug 18, 2006 by Jennie R Poston
An essay on "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, written by guest author Jennie R Poston.
One of the major themes in Kate Chopin's The Awakening is the the main character's internal strugle . Edna Pontellier, the protagonist, is torn between " . . . the two contradictory impulses that impelled her" : her social and familial responsibilities, and her emerging desires. As the novel progresses, she becomes increasingly distraught due to her negligence towards her obligations. Chopin is careful to make Edna's citations, emotions, and responses ambiguous. This strategy creates a more powerful and dynamic story, and is applied to nearly all of the characters in The Awakening. At times Edna feels drawn towards becoming a mother-woman. Yet at other times she is intoxicated by her new found sensuality. Edna's feelings of entrapment are established early on: " . . . all declared that Mr. Pontellier was the best husband in the world. Mrs. Pontellier was forced to admit that she knew of none better." Through Chopin's diction her discontent with Leonce and her lack of comfort in societal settings is revealed. Edna's frustration with her marriage drives her to direct her sexual desires towards Robert Lebrun and Alcee Arobin. As her awakening continues, she begins " . . . to realize her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the world within and about her." Through the progression of the novel, Edna emanates into a " . .. dual life-that outward existence which conforms, the inward questions."
