Kate Chopin
Kate Chopin was born Catherine O'Flaherty on July 12, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of an immigrant Irishman, Thomas O'Flaherty, and a French Creole mother, Eliza Faris. Kate was their youngest child. In 1855 Thomas O'Flaherty died suddenly from a work-related railroad accident. Kate lacked male role models in her life after her father died. She was raised by three generations of women, including her maternal great-grandmother, Madame Victoria Verdon Charleville, who instructed Kate in music lessons, French lessons (she only spoke to Kate in French), and storytelling. Additionally, Kate attended the prestigious Sacred Heart Academy, which promoted intelligence and independent thinking: this helped Kate begin her lifelong love of reading and writing. When Kate she was eleven, Madame Charleville died, and Kate's half-brother George was killed while fighting in the Civil War for the Confederate side. Kate grew up during the Civil War, and this caused her to be separated from the one friend she had made at the Sacred Heart Academy, Kitty Garesche. St. Louis was a pro-North city, and because the Greshe's were slave owners, they were forced to move. After the war, Kitty returned, and she and Kate were friends until Kitty entered Sacred Heart as a nun. There

Although Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin was a native of St. Louis (born 8 February 1851) and spent barely 14 years in Louisiana, her fiction is identified with the South. At 19, Kate O'Flaherty married Oscar Chopin, a young cotton broker, and moved with him to New Orleans and later to his family home in Cloutierville, La., near the Red River. After Oscar died in 1882, she returned with their six children to St. Louis; but when, eight years later, she began to write, it was the Creoles and 'Cadians of her Louisiana experiences that animated her fiction. Distinctly unsentimental in her approach, she often relied on popular period motifs, such as the conflict of the Yankee businessman and the Creole, a theme that informs her first novel, At Fault (1890), and several of her short stories. These vivid and economical tales, richly flavored with local dialect, provide penetrating views of the heterogeneous culture of south Louisiana. Many of them were collected in Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie . Chopin's second novel

Deep South v.2. n.3. (Spring 1996) Kate Chopin is best known in the literary world of today as author of the novel The Awakening . Highly controversial in its time, The Awakening deals with the condition of the nineteenth century woman in marriage, and has been more recently rediscovered and recognised as an overtly feminist text for these same reasons. This novel, however, represents only the climax of a literary career spent almost exclusively in the composition of short fiction. It was the 'mastering'[1] of the short story genre that allowed Chopin to complete her final masterpiece, to develop a style best suited to her thematic concerns. This development did not of course occur in isolation. All writers have their predecessors and in Chopin's case it appears that one man in particular was highly influential, French short story writer Guy de Maupassant, who took the literary world by storm in 1880 with pieces "...marked by an impeccable concise prose, carefully chosen expressive details and solidly realistic characters" (Ewell, Kate Chopin p. 19).

Story of an Hour

Kate Chopin, by Floramaria Deter Throughout her life, Kate Chopin, author of The Awakening Katherine O'Flaherty was born on February 8, 1850 (or 1851 as some critics believe) in St. Louis, Missouri to Eliza Faris O'Flaherty, a well-connected Louisiana woman with French roots, and Captain Thomas O'Flaherty, a businessman from Ireland. Her father became one of the first influences in her life. He found her natural curiosity fascinating and encouraged her interests. On November 1, 1855, Kate's father was killed in train accident. Because of his premature death, three strong maternal figures raised Kate: her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Madame Victoire Verdon Charleville, Kate's educated great-grandmother taught through the art of story telling, which is how Kate learned to be a successful storyteller. Through vivid French stories, she gave Kate a taste of the culture and freedom allowed by the French that many Americans during this time disapproved of. Many of the common themes in her grandmother's stories consisted of women struggling with morality, freedom, convention, and desire. The spirit of these stories endures in Kate's own works.

Footprints in Cloutierville
This article was written by Linda McGovern The Chopin Home If you didn't know Kate Chopin had lived there for a time, you might never have heard of or driven through Cloutierville with a second glance. Located along the Cane River in Natchitoches Parish in Northwest Louisiana, Cloutierville (pronounced Cloochyville) is approximately 260 miles from New Orleans. Kate Chopin described Cloutierville in one of her stories as, "This little French village was simply two long rows of very old frame houses, facing each other closely across a dusty roadway." 1 The quiet town hasn't changed much since Chopin's day and it still stands as a town set in the past, charmingly out of place in the modern day. Cloutierville was founded in 1822 by a Frenchman named Alexis Cloutier who hoped to make it the center of a new parish (county) but instead it remained very small. As I looked down the same small, once dusty but now paved, road there was no one to be seen, not even a designated parking place for visitors, just the grass by the side of the road. Advertisement:
Kate Chopin and her husband Oscar lived in this house for approximately four years. They moved from New Orleans in 1878, when Oscar's business as a cotton factor failed, due to the fact that his cotton yields were so small. He suffered terrible financial losses, which seemed to follow him for the remainder of his life.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Class discussions usually help a great deal to clear up such misunderstandings. These discussions are based on a very close reading of the text, calling attention to the myriad small clues Chopin always provided but readers do not always observe. "The Storm," being a sequel to "At the Cadian Ball," becomes much clearer in characterization and theme when students understand the groundwork that was laid in the earlier work. Indeed, without such explanation, "The Storm" hardly makes sense to many students. Since Chopin wrote everything she produced during the last decade of the nineteenth century but was too advanced in her thinking to be accepted until the last quarter of the twentieth century, she offers a fine vehicle for exploring the intellectual and aesthetic tides of American thinking and American literature. In important ways, she summarizes the nineteenth century with her fine mixture of romanticism, realism, and naturalism. But in other ways, she predicts the latter part of the twentieth century with her feminism and existentialism. I like to close one century and begin the next with her works.

Critics hardly knew what to do about the work of Kate Chopin, author of some of the boldest and best stories written in America before 1960. Hers were nineteenth-century stories exploring all sorts of taboo subjects—miscegenation, divorce, and even female sexuality.
The daughter of Thomas and Eliza (Faris) O'Flaherty, Chopin grew up in a wealthy Roman Catholic family in St. Louis. She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in 1868 and on June 9, 1870, married Oscar Chopin, a French Creole businessman from Louisiana. During the next nine years, Chopin bore six children and fulfilled heavy social obligations as the wife of a seemingly successful New Orleans cotton broker. But in 1879 Oscar's business failed and the family moved from New Orleans to Cloutierville, where they operated a plantation store and a farm owned by Oscar's family. On December 10, 1882, Oscar died, leaving Kate a thirty-two-year-old widow with six children and limited financial resources. In 1884 she moved her family back to St. Louis, where she lived the rest of her life.
In 1889, already thirty-nine years old, Chopin began writing poetry and fiction. Only a decade later, she had published twenty poems, ninety-five short stories, two novels, one play, and eight essays of literary criticism. Her fiction is, without question, her best work. She set most of her stories in late-nineteenth-century Louisiana, and she portrayed characters from all social classes of her time and place—aristocratic Creoles, middle- and lower-class Acadians and "Americans," mulattoes, and blacks. Her stories explore relationships among these various classes and, especially, relationships between men and women.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
Selections Annotated and Explained

Russell McNeil, PhD
Editor, Malaspina Great Books
In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)

The Rachals continued to own the property until Oscar Chopin bought the house in 1879 at a sheriff’s sale. Chopin was a cotton factor in New Orleans who decided to move his family to Cloutierville after his business had failed. His wife, Kate, was an assertive twenty-nine year old woman who had lived her entire life in St. Louis and New Orleans. She had already had five children, and she was pregnant with their sixth child.

US novelist and short-story writer. Her novel The Awakening (1899), the story of a married New Orleans woman's awakening to her sexuality, caused a sensation of hostile criticism, which effectively ended her career. It is now regarded as a classic of feminist sensibility. Following the death of her father, she was brought up by her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother in St Louis, Missouri, USA. An avid reader, Chopin first began to write to support her six children following the death of her husband and then her mother. She was the author of poignant tales of Creole and Cajun life in Bayou Folk hut(1)

Kate Chopin Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin better known as Kate Chopin, was one of the most talented writers in the South. Though she was not born in Louisiana, she spent much of her adult life there, and her work is based on Louisiana. Kate was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 8,1851. Her father, Thomas O'Flaherty, was a businessman who immigrated from Ireland; her mother, Eliza Faris, was of French Creole extraction. George and Thomas O'Flaherty were her two brothers. In June 1870, Kate married Oscar Chopin, a Creole from New Orleans. After their three month honeymoon in Europe, they moved to his hometown. She was an independent woman who enjoyed cigarettes, unconventional clothing, and solitary walks. Oscar apparently did not mind these quirks because he often shared them with her. She rejected the role of housewife, but it seemed she she gladly welcomed the position of motherhood. She and Oscar created six children in the nine years between 1871 and 1880. The family spent their summers in Grand Isle which was just a fashionable seaside resort at the time. Kate and her family moved to Cloutierville in Natchitoches Parish after the family business deteriorated in 1880. They settled down on a piece of Chopin property, and Oscar ran a general store for three years before he relinquished his claim to life in 1882 due to malaria. Kate and her children remained in Cloutierville for another year, and after a valiant yet unsuccessful attempt at running Oscar's business, they decided to relocate in St. Louis to live with her mother.
