The Concubine's Children by Denise Chong
Denise Chong achieves magic with her very human portrayal of her two, extraordinary grandparents, and the generational fall out of their roots in the "old world". It is seldom any author can reveal both the courage and failings of subjects with such generous objectivity. The fact that the story she tells of May-ying and Chan Sam was one that defined the warp and weave of her mother's life, penetrating into her own, makes it even more impressive. Adding the parallel life of the family in China creates an eerie, almost supernatural overlay that proves to be surprisingly real when the author and her mother brave the journey to discover the side of the family to whom they are the legends.

Chinacity Interview
Calgary Whether she is doing media promotions, working for the government, or writing a book about a family divided between war-torn China and the early 1900s Chinatowns of Canada, Denise Chong is a living example of the extent to which the Chinese community has evolved in status and become recognized for its contributions to society. The author of the newly released, The Concubine's Children , talked to Chinacity in Calgary, en route from Vancouver to Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, and, finally, Ottawa, as part of her nation-wide book promotion tour in late April. Raised in Prince George, British Columbia, Denise was an economist with the Department of Finance in Ottawa before becoming an economic advisor to Prime Minister Trudeau from 1980 to 1984. She speaks proudly of her accomplishments, especially when she looks back at the times of her grandparents' immigration to Canada. "I didn't realize the extent of it, until I did my history, that my grandparents lived in Canada at a time when they could not participate in White society." "They were excluded from it: they could not take out citizenship, they couldn't own land, they couldn't vote. And when I think back, that's part of their legacy."

by naoko kumagai What began as an article for Saturday Night magazine flourished into a enlightening and at times painful pilgrimage into the past for author Denise Chong. The result of that journey was the 1994 award winning, critically acclaimed national bestseller The Concubine's Children, which she presented January 27th at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre for the Women in View Festival. Chong accompanied her mother on the monumental sojourn to China and recalled that before the trip, her mother had been "leaning her back against the door of the past." When they were informed by Chinese authorities that Hing's siblings had at last been found, "the doorknob began rattling" and upon their arrival, they were flooded with stories and family relics. It was then that Chong realized her mother was the living link to her family's fragmented history. The reunion itself was an event Chong had long yearned for, going back to the day when she first found an old photograph of her aunts in the bottom drawer of her parents' dresser in their Prince George home. The image of the sisters as little girls standing hand and hand stayed with Chong, sparking questions about their life in China: "I knew [in the photo] they stood on Chinese soil, " Chong remembered, " I used to fantasize that if I dug a hole in the garden, I'd come up under their feet."

Concubine's Children by Denise Chong About this title: This is the true story, culled from letters, photographs, and memories, of the author's grandmother, brought to America from China as a young concubine by a traveler. It is also the story of the same man's abandoned wife and children, and of author Chong's discovery of those children 60 years later. One man's exploits resulted in a family living on two continents: a traditional wife in a village in South China and a concubine working in the Chinatowns of the West Coast. A tangled web of a story expertly told by Chong, an economist and writer. Note: This is a general synopsis. Each listing is further described below.
