Spotlight on Tracy Chevalier Historical Novelist When the reader is given access to different perspectives, I think the reader gets closer to the truth. After getting a BA in English in Ohio, Tracy Chevalier moved to England and worked as a reference book editor. Whilst on a MA in Creative Writing course at the University of East Anglia, Tracy began her first novel The Virgin Blue. The inspiration for Tracy's second novel Girl with a Pearl Earring came from a poster of a Vermeer painting. The book was published to worldwide success and has since been made into a movie. Tracy has gone on to write the widely acclaimed Fallen Angels and The Lady and the Unicorn. Halfway_house: Why do you like setting your novels in the past? Tracy Chevalier : I think I prefer setting them in the past, because I have to live my life everyday and that is enough for me. I would rather write about an era which I don't know everything about and which I can investigate further. I also find the past easier to analyse.

Tracy Chevalier - Author add to cart view cart Book: Hardcover Click here for other formats Burning Bright Set against the backdrop of a city nervous of the revolution gone sour across the Channel in France, Burning Bright explores the states of innocence and experience just as Blake takes on similar themes in his best-known poems, Songs of Innocence and of Experience “A novel teeming with the complexities of life . . . Chevalier has a fine eye for detail and delightfully captures the sights, smells, and sounds of an earlier time.”
Chicago Sun- Times
“Chevalier’s vivid descriptions and unusual mix of characters make this story an easy pleasure to read.”
Library Journal
“A visual delight.”
The Times (London)
“Chevalier’s writing is most lively and supple when depicting adolescent sexuality. Indeed, this novel could comfortably be classified as juvenile fiction—a very honorable genre. . . . If she succeeds in acquainting a new generation with the rapturous work of William Blake on the eve of the 250th anniversary of his birth, she can take pride in her accomplishment.”
The Boston Globe
“[E]ighteenth-century London, from its shadier neighborhoods to its more elegant areas, arises from these pages in all its cacophony.”

Burning Bright—Tracy Chevalier
A Novel About William Blake's Opposites of Innocence and Experience
Melissa Howard Sep 20, 2007
Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier is a novel about a country family that moves to London and finds themselves neighbors to William Blake.
Style
Tracy Chevalier Her characters are strong. They are distinct individuals. Some are necessarily complex but all are easy to relate to, with the exception of William Blake himself who is necessarily eccentric and for some, possibly, incomprehensible.
Plot/Characters
William Blake London opens the entire family changing them and teaching them about what is important in their life. The family learns to hold onto the solid country values that matter to them while dropping their prejudices and learning more about the world they live in.
Fulcrum
Songs of Innocence and of Experience Clearly, the acquisition of experience is important in this story. Country-folk are often considered naive and innocent. We see the entire Kellaway family grow and become more experienced in the ways of the world. But even street-hardened Maggie becomes more experienced through the story. Ironically, the experience that grows Maggie the most is personal exposure to the vulnerability of the Kellaways. The presence of Jem and his acceptance of both sides of her opens Maggie up to the possibility of vulnerability and the potential of reclaiming some small part of her lost innocence.

BOOKS INTERVIEW: TRACY CHEVALIER - World of interiors
Independent, The (London) Sep 13, 2003 by Jane Jakeman TRACY CHEVALIER'S novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, the story of a Dutch servant girl in the household of the artist Jan Vermeer, has a rare quality. Readers feel a personal relationship to it, a sense of private discovery which makes it one of the best-loved books on the shelf. Now it has received the ultimate historical accolade: a film starring Colin Firth. Chevalier has seen a preview, and thoroughly approves.

A set of bewitching medieval tapestries hangs today in a protected chamber in Paris. They appear to portray a woman's seduction of a unicorn, but the story behind their making is unknown-until now. In The Lady and the Unicorn , Tracy Chevalier weaves fact and fiction into a beautiful, timeless, and intriguing literary tapestry-an extraordinary story exquisitely told. top of the page
The Lady and the Unicorn is based on real tapestries of the same name. Does the knowledge that The Lady and the Unicorn is based on real events and people affect your reading? If so, how? The novel is structured around the making of the tapestries, from their conception to their completion. The lives of the people involved in their creation are altered. What does this suggest about the interconnectedness of life and art? In The Lady and the Unicorn , each character has a different understanding of the function of art. Is it, as Claude believes "to imitate life" or is it as Nicolas des Innocents suggests, "to make things more beautiful than they are?"

placeAd('article',commercialNode,24,'',false) By Sarah Waters Riverhead. 450 pp. $25.95 Over the past several years, English writer Sarah Waters has captured a corner of the market with a genre she created, the "Victorian lesbian romp." Beginning with male impersonators in the music-hall world in Tipping the Velvet and continuing with charlatan psychics in Affinity , Waters graduated to the full-blown Victorian sensation novel in the Booker Prize-nominated Fingersmith . It featured along with swapped babies, misplaced wills, wrongful imprisonment and characters with names like Mrs. Sucksby a mid-book twist so fiendish that ambushed readers flipped backward and forward as they read, trying to locate terra firma. While some dismissed Fingersmith as a sub-Wilkie Collins pastiche, others felt Waters had managed to write a Victorian entertainment that appeals to a modern audience, primarily through harnessing our sympathies to characters sexually out of step with their society and more in sync with our own more permissible one. It was not always obvious that lesbian protagonists could front bestsellers, yet they have; and in perhaps the clearest indication of establishment acceptance that an English novelist can expect, both Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith were made into BBC costume dramas.
