With precisely 35 canvases to his credit, the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer represents one of the great enigmas of 17th-century art. The meager facts of his biography have been gleaned from a handful of legal documents. Yet Vermeer's extraordinary paintings of domestic life, with their subtle play of light and texture, have come to define the Dutch golden age. His portrait of the anonymous Girl with a Pearl Earring has exerted a particular fascination for centuriesand it is this magnetic painting that lies at the heart of Tracy Chevalier's second novel of the same title.
Tracy Chevalier is also the author of The Lady and the Unicorn, Falling Angels and The Virgin Blue. AUTHOR INTERVIEW AUGUST 1, 2003
The Essential Vermeer: In a past interview you stated that before you begin writing something new, you habitually choose with care the notebook used for your research. Will you describe the notebook you chose for Girl with a Pearl Earring?
Tracy Chevalier: I chose an orange one, the size of my hand, with blank pages inside – I never write on lined paper. Inside the front cover I pasted a copy of the painting of Girl with a Pearl Earring. I know it must seem strange that the notebook was orange – you’d expect blue or yellow, the predominant colors of the girl’s head-dress in the painting. But I wanted a vivid color that was not used in the painting. For some strange reason it just seemed right. And right that she should be pasted in the inside cover – I wanted to look at her a lot and not have her get all scuffed as she would on the outside. Also she was a bit of a secret then. I didn’t want people to see her on the cover and guess what I was taking notes about.

After getting a BA in English from Oberlin College (Ohio), I moved to London, England in 1984. I intended to stay 6 months; I'm still here. "As a kid I'd often said I wanted to be a writer because I loved books and wanted to be associated with them. I wrote the odd story in high school, but it was only in my twenties that I started writing 'real' stories, at night and on weekends. Sometimes I wrote a story in a couple evenings; other times it took me a whole year to complete one. "Once I took a night class in creative writing, and a story I'd written for it was published in a London-based magazine called Fiction. I was thrilled, even though the magazine folded 4 months later. I worked as a reference book editor for several years until 1993 when I left my job and did a year-long MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia in Norwich (England). My tutors were the English novelists Malcolm Bradbury and Rose Tremain. For the first time in my life I was expected to write every day, and I found liked it. I also finally had an idea I considered 'big' enough to fill a novel. I began THE VIRGIN BLUE during that year, and continued it once the course was over, juggling writing with freelance editing.

Not because her novel Girl With a Pearl Earring has sold one million copies and is still making the bestseller lists. Not because she has just released her new novel Falling Angels . She feels lucky because she lives in the modern era. "I'm incredibly thankful to be born when I was," says the author. "It's only relatively recently women have more choice. I have opportunities even my mother didn't have." Chevalier's novels show just how far women have come. The author set Girl With a Pearl Earring in 17th century Holland and gave her narrator, Griet, a true artist's passion and eye. Born to a lower class family, the best Griet can do is work as a housemaid to the artist Vermeer. The new book, Falling Angels , takes place in Edwardian London and tells the story of Kitty Coleman, a young wife and mother. Chafing against her role as matron, Kitty thwarts convention and her family's wishes by becoming a suffragette.

Tracy Chevalier
Read by Anne Twomey
In 1901 London, as the precise social order of the Victorian era winds down and the forward-looking Edwardian order takes wing, three strangers meet in the city's tony Highgate Cemetery. Beautiful Lavinia revels in the elaborate trappings of the past. Plain Maude strives to shape the future. Simon Fields, a boy their age, is bound by poverty and professional to the cemetery.
As they explore the prejudices and flaws of a changing time, they bring their very different families together and ultimately discover that their fates are intertwined. Set against a gas-lit backdrop of social and political history, Tracy Chavelier's new novel continues her fascination with historical settings. "Since as an American in Britian I am already displaced geographically," she says, "I prefer to be displaced in time as well." Unabridged; 7 hours on 4 audiocassettes or 6 CDs

by Kim Chevalier NEWS J anuary 2008 Happy New Year to all! One of my New Year's resolutions is to read one classic book per month, to fill in some of the many gaps in my reading. These include David Copperfield War and Peace The Brothers Karamazov Moby-Dick , and - sigh - Proust. Why oh why do they all have to be so long? I expect this resolution will fall by the wayside, as so many resolutions do. You can see for yourself how I get on if you check What I Am Reading I've decided to start with something of a more reasonable length - Thomas Hardy's Return of the Native , which clocks in at a mere 496 pages! Wish me luck. Just when I thought that, after film, radio and special editions, nothing more would happen to Girl with a Pearl Earrin g, along comes another possibility. It seems quite likely to be made into a stage play! It would go on in London's West End, with a view to a move to Broadway. An adaptation has been drafted (not by me - I am taking a back seat) and the producers are thinking about casting. I am being vague about details only because I witnessed the ups and downs of the film process, and know that things which seem solid aren't always. So I am being cautious until it's up and running. But I would be thrilled to see Pearl Earring on stage. I can picture it clearly, and it makes sense. Fingers crossed...

I have begun research on a 19th-century fossil collector called Mary Anning. She was a working-class woman who lived all her life in Lyme Regis, a small town on the southern coast of England (where John Fowles set ). On its rocky shores and buried in its cliffs she discovered the first British pre-dinosaur fossils such as Ichthyosaurs and Plesiosaurs. She sold her findings to eminent male geologists, who went on to write and speak about them, taking all the glory while Mary lived in poverty. She was tough, prickly, and eccentric. Plus she was struck by lightning as a baby.
But my most challenging task will be to make fossils sexy.
