WHAT IS AMERICA?
G.K. Chesterton
From: What I Saw in America
Travel ought to combine amusement with instruction; but most travelers are so much amused that they refuse to be instructed. I do not blame them for being amused; it is perfectly natural to be amused at a Dutchman for being Dutch or a Chinaman for being Chinese. Where they are wrong is that they take their own amusement seriously. They base on it their serious ideas of international instruction. It was said that the Englishman takes his pleasures sadly; and the pleasure of despising foreigners is one which he takes most sadly of all. He comes to scoff and does not remain to pray, but rather to excommunicate. Hence in international relations there is far too little laughing, and far too much sneering. But I believe that there is a better way which largely consists of laughter; a form of friendship between nations which is actually founded on differences. Now that is the model of the sort of foreign practice, founded on foreign problems, at which a man's first impulse is naturally to laugh. Nor have I any intention of apologizing for my laughter. A man is perfectly entitled to laugh at a thing because he happens to find it incomprehensible. What he has no right to do is to laugh at it as incomprehensible, and then criticise it as if he comprehended it. The very fact of its unfamiliarity and mystery ought to set him thinking about the deeper causes that make people so different from himself, and that without merely assuming that they must be inferior to himself.

Chesterton "Enormous" Essayist, poet, writer "What can one be but frivolous about serious things? Without frivolity they are simply too tremendous." The life of Gilbert Keith Chesterton, like all lives, should not be summarized in a single word. Still, one asserts itself everywhere in his biographies: enormous . "He was close to 400 pounds," noted one chauffeur, in whose car door Chesterton was once stuck, "but he'd never give it away." Chesterton took his dilemma, like every other subject imaginable, with humor. He said he would have tried to exit the car sideways, but "I have no sideways." was born in London into a middle-class family. His father, Edward, was a member of the well-known Kensington auctioneer and estate agents business of Chesterton and his mother, Marie-Louise, was of Franco-Scottish ancestry. He did not learn to read until he was over eight and one of his teachers told him, "If we opened your head, we should not find brain but only a lump of white fat." Chesterton studied at University College and the Slade School of Art (1893-96). At the age of sixteen he started a magazine called The Debater Around 1893 he had gone through a crisis of skepticism and depression and during this period Chesterton experimented with the Ouija board and grew fascinated with diabolism.- In 1895 Chesterton left University College without a degree and worked for the London publisher Redway, and T. Fisher Unwin (1896-1902). Much of his works were first published in such publications as

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936)
G. K. Chesterton The paternal great-grandfather, grandfather and father of G. K. Chesterton were engaged in the business of selling houses,-house agents, as they are called in England. His father, Edward, married Marie Grosjean, whose family had long been English, but had originally come from French Switzerland. They had three children, Gilbert, born on May 29, 1874, Cecil, five years his junior, and Beatrice, who died in childhood. Gilbert's father distinguished between living and making a living: a successful businessman, he had a dozen hobbies, not the least of them the making of a toy-theatre, and he was widely read, especially in English literature. The Debater Greybeards at Play as well as to revise, edit and counsel the works of others. At St. Paul's Gilbert formed lifelong friendships with the future writer Edmund C. Bentley and with Lucian Oldershaw. In 1896 Lucian was courting Ethel Blogg (anglicized from Blogue) and took Gilbert with him to call. At first sight he fell in love with her sister Frances and, after a courtship extended by his then meager earnings, they were married in 1901. It was Lucian who, in 1900, also introduced the twenty-six-year old Gilbert to the thirty-year-old Belloc . Their reciprocal influence was lifelong as was their friendship.

G.K. Chesterton, English journalist and author, was born in London on the 20th of May 1874. He came from a family of real estate agents and was educated at St Paul’s school, which he left in 1891 with the idea of studying art. But his natural bent was literary, and he devoted himself mainly to cultivating that means of expression, both in prose and verse; he did occasional reviewing, and had some experience in a publisher’s office. In 1900, having already produced a volume of clever poems, The Wild Knight , he took to journalism as a career, and became a regular contributor of signed articles to the Speaker and Daily News . He established himself from the first as a writer with a distinct personality, combative, unconventional and dogmatic. The republication of much of his work in a series of volumes (e.g. Twelve Types Heretics Orthodoxy ) enhanced his reputation.

(Gilbert Keith Chesterton) Search Authors Search Books About G K Chesterton G K Chesterton has been described as one of the most unjustly neglected writers of our time. Born in 1874, he became a journalist and later began writing books and pamphlets. His work includes novels, literary and social criticism, political papers and spiritual essays in a style characterised by enormous wit, paradox, humility and wonder. He converted to Catholicism in 1922 and he explores the nature of spirituality in many of his books and essays, including the mighty Orthodoxy. Chesterton is one of the few authors who are genuinely timeless and whose work has as much relevance today as when it was written. New and Forthcoming Paperbacks G.F. Watts

    Chesterton Reformed: A Protestant Interpretation
    James Sauer
I've got a problem with Chesterton. The problem is that I think he is a wonderful, wise, witty, and pious man; after reading his works, I never leave the page without feeling edified. Then what's the problem? Perhaps, the problem, if it is a problem, isn't in Chesterton, but in me. For I am a Protestant; but not just any Protestant. I am an American Evangelical Protestant. But there's more. I am a Conservative, Capitalistic, Bible thumping American Evangelical Protestant. And hold on to your seats folks, just when you thought it couldn't get any worse; I must confess, I am also a Calvinist. We all have our crosses to bear. Anyone who is familiar with the writings of Chesterton will see the great irony in my situation. I can only ask you not to blame me for this state of affairs, I didn't choose to be elected; it was irresistible grace. I was predestined for Presbyterianism. But since I have received this unmerited favor of God, I might as well enjoy it. I can only thank my Sovereign Maker for his predestination. Not only did he choose me to be among his chosen people, but he also destined me to be among that other elect who have had the privilege of meeting through literature the great mind and good heart of Gilbert Keith Chesterton. No doubt the ever volitional Chesterton would have pointed out that predestination had nothing to do with all this; he would have argued that I chose to pick his books up of my own free will. But I think he is wrong on this matter: I must respond that it is all of God, as all grace is.

The year was 1922. He did not go to Oxford, where so many of his friends went, but to Art Schools, principally the Slade School of Art. He writes of this period of his life in his Autobiography, entitled it, "How to be a Lunatic." Idling at his work, he fell in with other idlers. He dabbled in spiritualism. "I hung on to religion by one thin road of thanks." This road of thanks to a Person for the gifts of life sent revulsion in him from the atmosphere of evil. He loved humanity and he loved things. He loathed pessimism. He had something of St Francis of Assisi about him and he would speak of Sister Rain. He wrote: If the arms of a man could be a fiery circle

    Will G.K. Chesterton Reappear?
Laura Meckler reports on campaign oratory from Nashua, N.H. As we await the speeches declaring both victory and defeat tonight, Washington Wire wondered if G.K. Chesteron might make another appearance. Chesterton, one of the more provocative Christian thinkers of the 20th century, played a starring role in Mike Huckabee ’s Iowa victory speech. “G.K. Chesterton once said that a true soldier fights not because he hates those who are in front of him, but because he loves those who are behind him,” Huckabee said. “Ladies and gentlemen, I recognize that running for office, it’s not hating those who are in front of us. It’s loving those who are behind us.”

Topic: Christianity Source: None We say, not lightly but very literally, that the truth has made us free. They say that it makes us so free that it cannot be the truth. To them it is like believing in fairyland to believe in such freedom as we enjoy. It is like believing in men with wings to entertain the fancy of men with wills. It is like accepting a fable about a squirrel in conversation with a mountain to believe in a man who is free to ask or a God who is free to answer. This is a manly and a rational negation, for which I for one shall always show respect. But I decline to show any respect for those who first of all clip the bird and cage the squirrel, rivet the chains and refuse the freedom, close all the doors of the cosmic prison on us with a clang of eternal iron, tell us that our emancipation is a dream and our dungeon a necessity; and then calmly turn round and tell us they have a freer thought and a more liberal theology.
