G. K. Chesterton's Blog
What if G.K. Chesterton had a blog?
These quotes from his many works lack the pungent relevance they once had when Chesterton engaged the world he knew with great wit and wisdom; but perhaps this is the next best thing.
Well, actually, I suppose the next best thing would be to engage our own world in like manner, as well as we can, and with all the resources we can muster a task G.K. would surely have encouraged.

G.K. Chesterton The "Colossal Genius"

Thursday, July 01, 2004
Whenever you hear much of things being unutterable and indefinable and impalpable and unnamable and subtly indescribable, then elevate your aristocratic nose towards heaven and snuff up the smell of decay. It is perfectly true that there is something in all good things that is beyond all speech or figure of speech. But it is also true that there is in all good things a perpetual desire for expression and concrete embodiment; and though the attempt to embody it is always inadequate, the attempt is always made. If the idea does not seek to be the word, the chances are that it is an evil idea. If the word is not made flesh it is a bad word.

Introduction to
G.K. Chesterton
by Edward Peters, JD/JCD Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was the brightest star in a constellation of great men who illuminated English and Catholic letters during the first half of the twentieth century. Forever linked with such giants as Hilaire Belloc, Msgr. Ronald Knox, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Evelyn Waugh, writers who excelled in two or three forms of writing, Chesterton worked in a half-dozen genres, and mastered nearly all of them. Moreover, his gentle personality and friendly manner of persuasion preserve him as the most readable of the great apologists who fought for Christian truth at the beginning of the bloody 20th century. Chesterton is often called the most quoted man in English; he was certainly one of the most prolific. Beyond his vast literary output, his exhaustive public speaking and debating work did much to advance the cause of common sense in general, and of Christian spiritual wisdom in particular. Indeed, Chesterton's conversion to the Catholic Church in 1922 was (second only to the disruption of the First Vatican Council during the Italian Revolution) the most talked-about religious event in Europe since the conversion of fellow Englishman John Henry Newman some 75 years earlier. Upon his death, Chesterton was named by Pope Pius XI a "Defender of the Catholic Faith" thereby redeeming somewhat a similar title bestowed on but squandered by another Englishman 400 years earlier. His devoted wife of 35 years, Frances Blogg, who helped bring the younger Chesterton out of a confused mishmash of world-views into a more critical Christianity, eventually followed her husband into the Church and died just two years after him.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (usually called G.K. Chesterton or simply GKC) was born in London in 1874. He became a well-known writer and lecturer. He was officially received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1922, but had been writing from a Romanist point of view for a long time before that. Some of his writing is specifically Roman Catholic, and (in my judgement) he sometimes takes a passing swipe at Protestant positions without troubling to understand them. However, much of his writing is "generic Christian," and is read with profit and delight by many readers, theologically conservative and otherwise, from all branches of Christendom and from none. (C. S. Lewis read him at a time when he was suspicious of most Christian writers, and counts him an influence in his conversion.) Chesterton died 14 June 1936, but is commemorated two days earlier on this calendar because the later days are taken. He also wrote fiction, his best known work being a series of detective short stories featuring a priest, Father Brown, who (somewhat after the matter of the TV sleuth Columbo) tends to give the appearance of being a harmless, bumbling, absent-minded fellow, but who always notices the detail that enables him to solve the case. Often, he connects the reasoning that solves the case with the sort of reasoning that is involved in Christian life. Chesterton's reputation as one of the key figures in Christian literature during the 20th century is linked inextricably with the concept of "orthodoxy." His book of that title, published in 1908, was, according to Wilfrid Ward, a major milestone in the development of Christian thought. Wilfrid Ward was certainly not alone in his flattering praise of Chesterton's book. Its influence on the intellectual development of a whole generation was summed up by Dorothy L. Sayers. She had first read Orthodoxy as a schoolgirl when her faith had been threatened by adolescent doubt. In later years she confessed that its "invigorating vision" had inspired her to look at Christianity anew, and that if she hadn't read Chesterton's book she might, in her schooldays, have given up Christianity altogether. "To the young people of my generation," Sayers wrote in 1952, "G.K.C. was a kind of Christian liberator." There is also a clear similarity between Chesterton's approach to orthodoxy and that of T. S. Eliot. In

So far as a man may be proud of a religion rooted in humility, I am very proud of my religion; I am especially proud of those parts of it that are most commonly called superstition. I am proud of being fettered by antiquated dogmas and enslaved by dead creeds (as my journalistic friends repeat with so much pertinacity), for I know very well that it is the heretical creeds that are dead, and that it is only the reasonable dogma that lives long enough to be called antiquated. From Autobiography Quotations Selected Chesterton Utterances (edited by Dave Armstrong) Biographical Brief Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the leading literary and apologetic figures in England during the first third of this century. George Bernard Shaw, an atheist, but very good friend of Chesterton's, called him a "colossal genius," no doubt wittily intending a double meaning (Chesterton was quite rotund in later years!). In an anthology by a Protestant publisher, he was described as "the ablest and most exuberant proponent of orthodox Christianity of his time"

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London in 1874. He was educated at St. Paul's School and Slade Art School . Chesterton lost interest in art and instead began writing articles for newspapers and journals such as The Daily News The Speaker The Bookman and the Illustrated London News
Chesterton's first two books were collections of poetry, The Wild Knight (1900) and Greybeards at Play (1900). This was followed by biographies of Robert Browning Charles Dickens (1906) and R. L. Stevenson (1907) and the popular novel, The Innocence of Father Brown
On the outbreak of the First World War , Chesterton was recruited by Charles Masterman , the head of Britain's War Propaganda Bureau (WPB), to help shape public opinion. His work included the writing of two pamphlets, The Barbarism in Berlin (1915) and T he Crimes of England (1915) and numerous articles in Britain's newspapers.
In 1922 Chesterton became a Roman Catholic . This influenced the subject matter of his work and he published biographies of St. Francis of Assisi
