Executive summary: Cyteen and Downbelow Station Author C.J. Cherryh is best known for such novels as Cyteen (Hugo 1988), Downbelow station (Hugo 1989), Sunfall The Dreaming Tree Hellburner Foreigner and Fortress in the Eye of Time . She is considered one of the foremost writers of "hard science fiction", exploring the implications of technology on individuals and society. She is noted for her expert control of language as well as her impressive imagination and her warped and subtle wit. Born in St. Louis an adorable Shirley Temple look-alike, complete with blonde ringlets and dazzling smile, she grew up amidst the privations and shortages associated with the Second World War. She was precocious, independent, and always ahead of her age group. By the age of seven she had supposedly read her way through half the local library, at which point her family (now expanded to include little brother David and relocated to Lawton, Oklahoma) got its first television. She spent hours glued to televised broadcasts of Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Tom Corbett. When Cherryh was ten she began to write her own stories. And when she was sixteen, she would take off in the family car with the excuse of taking little David to the movies and zip off with her girlfriends to see the latest science fiction or adventure thriller.

The Faded Sun
C.J. Cherryh
Mandarin 1991 A book review by Danny Yee Originally published in three volumes over a decade ago, The Faded Sun is one of Cherryh's earliest science fiction works, and is characteristic of her output. It is a novel about an alien species called the mri, and their interactions with man and with another species called the regul. The plot involves a human joining two mri and helping them to save their species, renouncing his humanity in the process. The portrayal of alien species is one of the grand themes of science fiction. The problem is that the more plausibly alien the species, the harder it is for the reader to identify with alien characters (not to mention for the author to envisage them in the first place). The usual way around this is to use a human protagonist interacting with the aliens, or to make the aliens human enough to be understandable. Both of these solutions are used in The Faded Sun . Sten Duncan, the human protagonist, ends up joining the mri, and the mri themselves are close enough to human in both appearance and behaviour that one could read large passages involving them without realising they were alien. The mri are more an alternative culture than a different species. Cherryh portrays them skillfully, although the historical background seems a little dubious: I can't see how a species so similar to Homo sapiens in other regards could have maintained a culture without change for 80000 years. The other species involved, the regul, are not portrayed in as much depth as the mri, but are more genuinely alien. They are, in my opinion, among the most interesting of SF attempts to create an alien species. Unsexed as birth they become sexed (and almost immobile) upon maturity, and it is these elders who rule, the lives of young being almost valueless. They live up to 300 years and have eidetic memories, but no ability to imagine...

From SCIFIPEDIA Carolyn Cherry September 1 pseudonym C. J. Cherryh from the very beginning of her writing career in the mid- . Based on her Morgaine series and similar novels, she quickly established a reputation as a skilled and reliable source for otherworldly adventure novels, and also won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award as best new writer. The Faded Sun trilogy in alien culture that she created therein attracted loyal fans similar to those who were drawn to Marion Zimmer Bradley 's Darkover novels or Gordon R. Dickson 's Dorsai series. Cherryh's rapidly developing skills won her the Hugo Award for her novel Downbelow Station ), one of several books she would set in the Merchanter universe. The direct sequel, Merchanter's Luck ), was entertaining but less successful. Her ability to create believable alien cultures continued to be a valuable asset, and her next series, starting with The Pride of Chanur (1982), was an even greater success. The Chanur are felinoid aliens with a mildly matriarchal society who support themselves as interstellar traders. They are part of a complex interstellar community that includes the Kif, a mysterious and nefarious race, and humans, who are virtually unrecognized by the established powers.

DAW Books
Hardcover, February 2004 642 pages ISBN 0-7564-0217-4 MSRP: $23.95 Review by Paul Di Filippo Sunfall (1981) and Visible Light Sunfall cycle. With almost three dozen stories, this book resists handy summarizing. It's possible in this limited space only to hit the highlights. It should first be mentioned, given the SF remit of the reviewer, that a fair number of the stories are fantasies, not science fiction. "A Thief in Korianth" concerns the unlucky turn experienced by a young female cutpurse when she steals a wallet bearing an invaluable prize. Celtic material features in "Two Brothers" and "Gwydion and the Dragon." Fables and allegories are presented in "The Last Tower," "The Dark King" and "The Unshadowed Land." "Of Law and Magic" riffs humorously on the involvement of a lawyer in sorcerous affairs. And "Willow" tracks the homecoming of a weary warrior who meets a young girl and her mother who are not what they seem. The Sunfall tales are linked by a common setting, a "dying earth" scenario where mankind huddles in the failing metroplexes of his brighter past. "The Only Death in the City" finds a young man who is willing to sacrifice his immortality for the sake of love. Bettine Maunfry has made the mistake of alienating her lover, the all-powerful Mayor of London, and now finds herself immured in a famous site, "The Haunted Tower." New York has been transformed into a unitary skyscraper of immense dimensions in "Highliner." And in "MasKs," the tale original to this volume, a young woman rejects being a pawn in the city's elaborate politics.

A: I just go to that same daydream-spot inside my head that I'mpretty sure all of us have. I don't know if people who don'twrite for a living actually meet strangers there, but I do, on aregular basis, and I absolutely insist they arrive with a goodproblem and tell me about it. There are particularly good spotsfor productive encounters: there's a beach I imagine and if I sitlong enough and stare down the length of it, I'm sure someonewill come walking down it, and most of them are interesting whenthey arrive. Sometimes I don't write all I meet, but most of theones I meet do have interesting backgrounds.
