Cherryh (pronounced "Cherry") appended a silent "h" to her real name because her first editor ( Donald A. Wollheim ) felt that "Cherry" sounded too much like a romance writer. Her initials of C.J. were used to disguise the fact that she was female (at the time almost all science fiction authors were male). Don't even know my real name C. J. Cherryh is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy. She is remarkable for the quality of her world-building, and in particular for the politics; she is one of the most political writers I know of. Now, by this I don't mean that she spouts off her own political views, like, say, Jerry Pournelle (who isn't really fit to be mentioned in the same breath), but that political conflicts are central to her stories and are looked on with a gaze so flinty as to strike sparks. (We'll get back to the sparks.) This puzzled me for about half a dozen novels, because I knew I'd seen this sort of vision of politics before, but couldn't for the life of me place it: and then I realized she was thinking like an archaeologist . That is to say, she begins with very grubby questions about who makes the goodies everyone wants, and who has the power to get them, and what they do with them, how they squabble amongst each other and ally with one another, how they control those below them. Lo and behold, Cherryh is a trained archaeologist; also a

claustrophobic but cool Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? C.J. Cherryh is the the author of numerous suspenseful science fiction and fantasy novels. Her heroes and heroines are generally to be found in stressful, claustrophobic situations, threatened at every turn. Often the danger is in part due to their own weaknesses. Many of her characters are extremely talented in some way, but ill-equiped to cope with the crises they are presented with. C.J. Cherryh's books tend to have complex backgrounds and political situations, about which she (as author) tells the reader remarkably little. One must read carefully, and piece things together as the book goes on. As a result, her books often make more sense on a second reading. She is quite good at making the reader feel as uneasy as her characters. I like Cherryh's work quite a bit, but I confess I need to be in the right mood. This is not light reading. Perhaps the best introduction to her work is the Chanur series, which starts with The Pride of Chanur . Pyanfar Chanur is the captain of a trading ship

Writerisms : overused and misused language. In more direct words: find 'em, root 'em out, and look at your prose without the underbrush.
  • am, is, are, was, were, being, be, been by " or with " " implied but not stated. Such structures are passives. In general, limit passive verb use to one or two per book. The word "by" followed by a person is an easy flag for passives. am, is, are, was, were, being, be, been an adjective . "He was sad as he walked about the apartment." "He moped about the apartment." A single colorful verb is stronger than any was + adjective ; but don't slide to the polar opposite and overuse colorful verbs. There are writers that vastly overuse the "be" verb; if you are one, fix it. If you aren't one-don't, because over fixing it will commit the next error. florid verbs This statement also goes for unusual descriptions and odd adjectives, nouns, and adverbs. odd connectives . Some writers overuse "as" and "then" in an attempt to avoid "and" or "but," which themselves can become a tic. But "as" is only for truly simultaneous action. The common deck of conjunctions available is:
    • when (temporal) since (ambiguous between temporal and causal) although (concessive) because (causal) and (connective) but (contrasting) as (contemporaneous action or sub for "because") while (roughly equal to "as")
These are the ones I can think of. If you use some too much and others practically never, be more even-handed. Then, BTW, is originally more of an adverb than a proper conjunction, although it seems to be drifting toward use as a conjunction. However is really a peculiar conjunction, demanding in most finicky usage to be placed *after* the subject of the clause.

    The Faded Sun Trilogy
    by C.J. Cherryh
    reviewed by Alma A. Hromic
This trilogy was originally published as 3 separate volumes, almost 30 years ago. When encountering these books for the first time, back in the early 80s, Alma remembers being struck most forcibly by one single aspect of the narrative its ALIENNESS. It read as though it had been written by a non-human mind and hand, and then translated or transliterated into our language and idiom. It treated the humans as just another alien species in a Universe teeming with them.

Bren Cameron returns as the Paidhi and newly-made Lord of the Heavens, and it will take all his diplomatic skills and his deep understanding of the Atevi to keep the fragile peace between humans and Atevi alive. He has discovered that all their knowledge of the human past may be based on a lie. Recently, Ramirez, the captain of the human ship Phoenix confessed that he falsified reports that the human station, Reunion, had been destroyed by aliens.

Caroline Cherryh is one of the foremost writers of ``hard SF'' working today. By this I mean that it is driven by speculation about the implications of technology on our society. This means no magic swords or other fantasy trappings. Some of the series below are described as strongly connected. This means you shouldn't start reading the first volume unless you have them all on hand. Cherryh has a way of hanging you over some godawful nasty cliffs between volumes. In at least one case not only the fate of the protagonist but the fate of the species itself is in doubt-right at the end of a volume. (By the way, Cherryh has done some good fantasy too, but I don't want to scare away any hard SF fans.)

CJ Cherryh: The Outcast and the Uncertain Mind
Since her 1976 debut with Gate of Ivrel , CJ Cherryh has earned a reputation as a diverse and prolific writer. Prolific she surely is, having written somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 novels to date, in addition to short fiction and several collaborations. Diversity is also an apt description, as her settings range from the quasi-fantastic to the technical, and include several forays into pure fantasy. Despite diversity, many of the finest writers become fascinated with a particular type of character or theme, and explore it in many different settings. Zelazny examined the mortality of immortals. Vance is fascinated with the mutability of culture. Cherryh explores the turmoil of the outcast. The struggle of the outsider to cope with suspicion, intolerance, or plain lack of understanding from his fellows is a plot element Cherryh employs as a lens through which other events of the novel are examined. Often this is the major plot line of the story (eg Merchanter's Luck Rimrunners Tripoint , and Finity's End ). Just as often, it is a minor plot element (eg Josh Talley's situation in

by Joan D. Vinge Carolyn Cherryh and I go back a long and winding way. I think we've known each other for nearly twenty years now, almost as long as we've both been professional writers. We have a lot of other things in common too, like being about the same age, about the same height; having reddish hair, and last names that confound almost everyone who tries to pronounce them. The first I met her, I knew immediately that I was going to like her as much as I already liked her writing (needless to say, a lot). Over the years since then we've seen each other mainly at SF cons, those floating small towns. But ìquality timeî can be as hard to get as the brass ring on a merry-go-round; to score an entire dinner-hour is a rare prize. Too many of my memories are of ten minutes talk-ing in a hallway, an hour on a panel, a "see you later" promise that I never got to keep. But I'll always have Chiconóa perfect memory of standing on a stage to hand Carolyn a Hugo for Best Novel. C.J. Cherryh, like Michael Whelan, is one of those people who really deserve their gifts from the Muses. Besides her creativity, she has intelligence, a wicked sense of humor, and real insight into human nature. She's also one of the most inspirational people I've ever met, although I've never had the chance to tell her so.
