Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1343-1400)
Chaucer was the first great poet writing in English, whose best-known work is 'The Canterbury Tales'. Geoffrey Chaucer was born between 1340 and 1345, probably in London. His father was a prosperous wine merchant. We do not know any details of his early life and education. In 1357, he was a page to Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster, wife of King Edward III's third son. Chaucer was captured by the French during the Brittany expedition of 1359, but was ransomed by the king. Edward III later sent him on diplomatic missions to France, Genoa and Florence. His travels exposed him to the work of authors such as Dante, Boccaccio and Froissart. Around 1366 Chaucer married Philippa Roet, a lady-in-waiting in the queen's household. They are thought to have had three or four children. Philippa's sister, Katherine Swynford, later became the third wife of John of Gaunt, the king's fourth son and Chaucer's patron.

G eoffrey Chaucer pursued many occupations during his life: soldier, diplomat, intelligence officer, construction supervisor, Controller of Customs, and member of Parliament. Yet, it is for his literary accomplishments that he has achieved enduring fame. The Canterbury Tales , never completed, represents his magnum opus and the crowning achievement of his life. H e began work on The Canterbury Tales about 1387, and intended for each of his thirty pilgrims to tell four tales, two while traveling to Canterbury and two while traveling from Canterbury. However, only twenty-three pilgrims received a story before Chaucer's death in 1400. C haucer's Tales quickly spread throughout England in the early fifteenth century. Scholars feel The Canterbury Tales reached their instant and continued success because of their accurate and oftentimes vivid portrayal of human nature, unchanged through 600 years since Chaucer's time. George Macy, founder of The Limited Editions Club wrote on The Canterbury Tales: . . . it has been said of The Canterbury Tales that all of humanity moves through its pages. The stories are full of an inimitable humor, at once friendly and shrewd. The points are often made casually, often with bludgeon strokes, but they are always human and illuminating.

Biography of Geoffrey Chaucer (1340-1400)
Geoffrey Chaucer Before William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer was the preeminent English poet, and still retains the position as the most significant poet to write in Middle English. Chaucer was born in the early 1340s to a middle-class family. His father, John Chaucer, was a vintner and deputy to the king's butler. His family's financial success came from work in the wine and leather businesses, and they had considerable inherited property in London. Little information exists about Chaucer's education, but his writings demonstrate a close familiarity with a number of important books of his contemporaries and of earlier times (such as Boethius's The Consolation of Philosophy .) Chaucer was likely fluent in several languages, including French, Italian and Latin. Sons of wealthy London merchants could receive good educations at this time, and there is reason to believe that, if Chaucer did not attend one of the schools on Thames street near his boyhood home, then he was at least well-educated at home. Chaucer first appears in public records in 1357 as a member of the house of Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster. This was a conventional arrangement in which sons of middle-class households were placed in royal service so that they may obtain a courtly education. Two years later Chaucer served in the army under Edward III and was captured during an unsuccessful offensive at Reims, although he was later ransomed. Chaucer served under a number of diplomatic missions.

Skeat; 2nd Edition, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1900). This text is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN in the United States. This electronic edition was edited and prepared by Douglas B. APPENDIX PREPARER'S NOTE: The prologue of this work is extant in essentially two versions, commonly referred to as the "A-Text" and the "B-Text". The "B- Text" is generally considered Chaucer's final version, and is here incorporated into the main text. However, because the earlier "A-Text" differs substantially in many parts from the "B- Text", it has been added to this edition as an Appendix. There are two recognized systems of line numbering for this work, and critics have long debated as to which is the more appropriate. The most common method is to number the lines from the beginning of the "B-Text" Prologue. However, some critics assign numbers from the beginning of each section. This electronic text principally follows the former convention; however, line numbers from the beginning of each section have also been added, and are indicated by PARENTHESIS (XXXX).

Welcome to the Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales site! The purpose of this site is to allow the Chaucer curious a single site to launch their exploration into this most wonderful poet.  Are you sick of sites that list 20,000 links all over the place so you never know where you are? Me too. That will not happen here. The main directory is shown below and I promise that you will not get lost. So journey on and begin your pilgrimage. Host's suggestion to tell 4 tales per pilgrim. I leave it to you, gentle reader, to come to your own conclusion whether the Canterbury Tales are complete or not. Chaucer devises a diverse collection of characters. The pilgrims represent a wide variety of occupations and class-status. The three class stations in Chaucer's time were the clergy, the nobility and everybody else not in the first 2 groups. To wit in the Canterbury Tales we have a monk (clergy) a knight (nobility) and a miller (ordinary guy).  The main narrator of the Tales is an ordinary guy named Chaucer. Call him "pilgrim Chaucer" to separate him from "author Chaucer". Pilgrim Chaucer lets the reader view the other pilgrims through his eyes. We also learn of their personalities through how they tell their tales and how other pilgrims relate to them. The Tales themselves range in diversity as much as the pilgrims that tell them. There are tales of parody, satire, love and religion among others. Chaucer utilizes several literary genres in some of his tales. Such as fabliau, beast fable and courtly love. But make no mistake: there are not any cookie-cutter hack jobs of these forms. One outstanding feature of Chaucer's work is his ability to utilize these genres but make them uniquely his.
