This second great creator (after Hammett) in the realistic 'hardboiled' American detective story had a formal classical education in England and felt, in many respects, closer ties with that country than with his own. This embittered depictor of lust and lechery was also one of the great monogamists in the history of love."Anthony Boucher, The New York Times Book Review Raymond Chandler Speaking offers us various unpublished pieces. . . and a large number of letters written to his publishers, agents, fellow writers and various friends. . . . Chandler's many admirers will find it a good value. Young writers chiefly concerned with the novel of action and violence should not miss it, for Chandler, at his best a master of this kind of fiction, has much to say that deserves their attention."J. Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 23, 1888, but spent most of his boyhood and youth in England, where he attended Dulwich College and later worked as a freelance journalist for The Westminster Gazette and The Spectator . During World War I, Chandler served in France with the First Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, transferring later to the Royal Flying Corps (R. A. F.). In 1919 he returned to the United States, settling in California, where he eventually became director of a number of independent oil companies. The Depression put an end to his business career, and in 1933, at the age of forty-five, he turned to writing, publishing his first stories in Black Mask . By the time he published his first novel, The Big Sleep (1939), featuring, as did all his major works, the iconic private eye Philip Marlowe, it was clear that he had not only mastered a genre but had set a standard to which others could only aspire. Chandler created a body of work that ranks with the best of twentieth-century literature. He died in 1959. The Lady in the Lake The Lady in the Lake

    The King in Perpetuity
Editor’s note: I actually wrote this short piece last year for my other blog, Limbo . But since most of you probably didn’t read it there, and since I don’t think I can outdo myself on this subject, I’ve decided to rerun the item hereof course, updating it slightly to match the number of birthdays this author would now be celebrating.
Today marks the 118th birthday of American detective-story writer Raymond Chandler . Of course, the author himself died way back in 1959, not long after the publication of his seventh novel. But that shouldn’t stop us from celebrating this occasion. After all, Chandler was one of the foremost authors (not merely one of the foremost mystery authors ) of the 20th century. Without him, what we know today as the hard-boiled crime tale might be quite differentprobably less literary in aim, if not always in execution. Chandler took the raw, realistic intrigue style that Dashiell Hammett James M. Cain

Today's Blog Raymond Chandler and the woman he loved Denise Hamilton Bio Email Judith Freeman It’s a cool fall evening as we leave Freeman’s 1930s persimmon bungalow near MacArthur Park and head west along a gritty stretch of Third Street toward Rampart.
Freeman stops to point out the Mother Trust Superet Light Center. I’ve driven past it a zillion times without really noticing the two-story, white-columned brick building with its adjacent church and rose garden. It’s quaint, modest and also timeless, something right out of Carey McWilliams. Freeman says it dates to the 1920s, the era of evangelical cult personalities like Aimee Semple McPherson. A little tingle comes over me. The Superet is a fenced-off jewel-box of a mystery, serene amidst the grime and gritty commerce of Third Street. I picture it weathering almost a century of change, watching the neighborhoods turn from wealthy and white to working class, then Latino and now Korean. When I Google Superet a few days later, I’m delighted to learn it was founded in 1925 by Dr. Josephine C. Trust, S.A.A.S., “the only Chartered Superet Atoms Aura Scientist of the Superet Science in the world.” We continue our walk, past Latina mothers hurrying along with children and groceries and young men talking on the sidewalk. Cars and buses whiz by, leaving trails of exhaust. We turn south on Lafayette Park, and Freeman points out the corner where an ornate, three-story mansion used to stand when she first moved to the area in 1989.

1988 saw the birth centenary of one of detective fiction's most famous exponents, Raymond Chandler. His crime-busting private eye, Philip Marlowe, a mediaeval knight-errant in 20th century clothing, has lost none of his mystique in over half a century. Marlowe, in fact, remains the most widely quoted, parodied and generally emulated sleuth of them all. Raymond Chandler wrote only seven novels featuring his private detective, but Marlowe caught the public imagination right away - and remained there. To date there have been nine major feature films of the various novels, along with a number of TV adaptations - some conspicuously more successful than others. The same could be said for the portrayals of Marlowe himself, who has been taken on over the years by Dick Powell, George Montgomery, Robert Montgomery, Van Heflin, Gerald Mohr, Phil Carey, James Garner, Elliott Gould and Robert Mitchum - as well, of course, as the inimitable Humphrey Bogart; and although far removed from Raymond Chandler's physical description of Marlowe, his is probably the definitive portrait - so far. But all Raymond Chandler fans must have their own inward picture of Marlowe, which they conjured up when they first opened "The Big Sleep"; and it is the books that concern us here. Detective fiction has always been a good collecting option, giving hours of reading pleasure and producing handsome and colourful collections of books that steadily appreciate in value, and chandler's are no exception. Coveted first editions of the novels are increasing in value all the time and the forties and Fifties-style pictorial dust-wrappers that adorn most of them are good examples of their kind.

The voice on the telephone seemed to be sharp and peremptory, but I didn't hear too well what it said partly because I was only half awake and partly because I was holding the receiver upside down. I fumbled it around and grunted.
"Did you hear me? I said it was Clyde Umney, the lawyer."
"Clyde Umney, the lawyer. I thought we had several of them."
    "You're Marlowe, aren't you?"
"Yeah. I guess so." I looked at my wrist watch. It was 6:30 a.m., not my best hour.
"Don't get fresh with me, young man."
"Sorry, Mr. Umney. But I'm not a young man. I'm old, tired and full of no coffee. What can I do for you, sir?"
"I want you to meet the Super Chief at eight o'clock, identify a girl among the passengers, follow her until she checks in somewhere, and then report to me. Is that clear?"
    "No."

    Raymond Chandler: A Biography
    By Tom Hiney
Atlantic Monthly Press; 320 Pages; $26 cloth.

Tom Hiney's biography of detective-fiction master Raymond Chandler skips the psychobabble and sticks to the facts By Allen Barra Has any writer with less of an oeuvre influenced American culture more than mystery writer Raymond Chandler? His first-rate work consists of a few novels ( The Big Sleep Farewell, My Lovely The Long Goodbye ), film scripts for Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity and Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train , a famous essay ("The Simple Art of Murder") or two, and perhaps a few stories. And yet, for millions of people around the world who don't read any other detective fiction, Chandler defined a genre (the hard-boiled detective story), a city (pre- and post-WWII Los Angeles) and a style (film noir). Certainly no writer of similar impact has gone so long without a definitive biography. Tom Hiney's Raymond Chandler: A Biography fills a major gap, if not in American literature then certainly in American popular culture. Hiney's smooth-reading volume is informative and gloriously free of postmodernist cant.
