Rufus King was a prolific novelist, playwright, and short story writer in the Van Dine school, whose career stretched from the 1920's to the 1960's. King had a vivid writing style, with colorful characters, events, and images. The star of this tale is King's series detective Reginald De Puyster, who is clearly related to Philo Vance. It is hard to tell at this date, who came first, Vance or De Puyster. The first Vance book appeared in 1926, the same year as De Puyster apparently appeared in magazines. Both men are verbally witty sophisticates. King's later series detective, Lt. Valcour, is much more down to earth, but similar sophisticates appear as suspects in some of the Valcour novels, such as Dumarque in Murder by Latitude
After De Puyster, King created New York police Lieutenant Valcour, and starred him in a series of 11 novels from 1928 to 1939. Some of King's stories show a tendency to degenerate from mystery tales into thrillers, for example, Murder by the Clock (1928-1929). Valcour is French Canadian, and the son of an émigré French police officer. The biography states that Valcour was trained in the "brilliantly" intuitive methods of the French police. It explicitly contrasts these with the "plodding detailed routine" of British police officers.

    Summary:
"It is at best but a mixture of a little good with much evil and a little pleasure with much pain; the beautiful is linked with the revolting, the trivial with the solemn, bathos with pathos, the commonplace with the sublime." from the PREFACE: Among the fifty-eight regiments of Zouaves and the seven regiments of Lancers enlisted in the service of the United States between 1861 and 1865 it will be useless for the reader to look for any record of the 3d Zouaves or of the 8th Lancers. The red breeches and red fezzes of the Zouaves clothed many a dead man on Southern battle-fields; the scarlet swallow-tailed pennon of the Lancers fluttered from many a lance-tip beyond the Potomac; the histories of these sixty-five regiments are known. But no history of the 3d Zouaves or of the 8th Lancers has ever been written save in this narrative; and historians and veterans would seek in vain for any records of these two regimentsregiments which might have been, but never were.

He of the buttons knocked again to take the edge off before he entered; then opened the door and unburdened himself as follows: The Common Law There was a long, brisk, decisive ring at the door. He continued working. After an interval the bell rang again, briefly, as though the light touch on the electric button had lost its assurance.

I recollect particularly a passage in one of Jack's letters replying to
    one of mine
"What you tell me of seeing Boris bending over you while you lay ill, and
feeling his touch on your face, and hearing his voice, of course troubles
me. This that you describe must have happened a fortnight after he died.
I say to myself that you were dreaming, that it was part of your
delirium, but the explanation does not satisfy me, nor would it you." Toward the end of the second year a letter came from Jack to me in India so unlike anything that I had ever known of him that I decided to return at once to Paris. He wrote: "I am well, and sell all my pictures as artists do who have no need of money. I have not a care of my own, but I am more restless than if I had. I am unable to shake off a strange anxiety about you. It is not apprehension, it is rather a breathless

In October of 1844, a small bomb went off in the world of British science. The bomb took the form of a 400-page book with the grand title Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation , presenting a comprehensive account of the history of the Earth, from the formation of the Solar System through the development of plant and animal life, up to the origins of humankind. Strangely, there was no author's name on the cover. The book sold remarkably well over 20,000 copies in a decade, making it one of the best-sellers of its time. Abraham Lincoln and Queen Victoria read it; so did poets like Alfred Tennyson and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, statesmen like William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli, scientists like Thomas Henry Huxley and Adam Sedgwick , and philosophers like Arthur Schopenhauer and John Stuart Mill. Critical responses ran the gamut from enthusiasm to damnation. "Like a breath of fresh air to workmen in a crowded factory," said the politically liberal medical journal, the Lancet . Physicist Sir David Brewster warned that Vestiges stood a "fair chance of poisoning the fountains of science, and sapping the foundations of religion." Scottish journalist and geologist

The King in Yellow, Robert W. Chambers
The King in Yellow is an amazing little collection of loosely related fin-de-si¨cle (end of the century) horror stories, written in 1895. It served as one of the primary literary influences for H.P. Lovecraft and the entire "weird tale" genre, which peaked as a literary form in the pulp magazines of the early 20th century.
One should not pick up this book with the expectation that all the stories are coherently linked. They are written from different perspectives and from different times and places, though several of the stories are set in an imagined future 1920's America and Paris. The stories are not even always related thematically, other than being sinister works or weird horror. The most important recurring elements in the stories are:
Yellow, a color indicative of the decadent and aesthetic attitudes fashionable at the end of the 19th century. Notable reference points include The Yellow Book , a literary journal by Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley, and the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, The Yellow Wallpaper . Yellow may also suggest quarantine, decay, and illness, especially mental illness.
