Biography of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
We know little about the birth of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The exact date cannot be found in any registry. Perhaps he was born the 29th of September, the day of San Miguel, for which he was named. We do know that he was born in Alcalá de Henares, a small university town near Madrid, where he was baptised in the church of Santa María on October 9, 1547. Cervantes was the fourth of the seven children born to Doña Leonor de Cortinas and Don Rodrigo de Cervantes, an itinerant surgeon who struggled to maintain his practice and his family by travelling throughout Spain. Little more is known about the first twenty years of Cervantes’ life. He is thought to have gone to school in Valladolid and Sevilla. We don’t know any dates except that in 1567-68, he was registered in the school of the Spanish humanist, Juan Lopez de Hoyos, in Madrid. In 1569 Cervantes travelled to Italy to serve in the household of an Italian nobleman and, a year later, he joined the Spanish military. On September 7, 1571, he fought bravely against the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto where he was seriously wounded and lost the use of his left hand. After a lengthy period of recovery, he decided to return to the soldier’s life. In April 1572, he joined the company of Manuel Ponce de León, where we believe his brother Rodrigo was also enrolled. Together they participated in a number of battles.

Timeline Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, fourth child of the surgeon Rodrigo de Cervantes and of Leonor de Cortinas, is born in Alcalá de Henares. He may have been born September twenty-ninth, the day of Saint Michael, hence his name Miguel. But so far, the only thing that has been found is his baptismal certificate, according to which he was baptized October 9, 1547, in the Church of Saint Mary the Great.. He became a soldier and took part in the sea battle at Lepanto, during which he received a wound that permanently maimed his left hand. He set out with his brother Rodrigo on the galley El Sol for Spain. The ship was captured by the Turks and the brothers were taken to Algiers as slaves Cervantes spent five years as a slave until his family could raise enough money to pay his ransom. Married to Catalina de Salazar, Cervantes published a pastoral novel

Full name: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Miguel de Cervantes wrote the epic satire Don Quixote , which is regarded as the first true modern novel. Little is known of Cervantes's early life; at 23 he enlisted in the Spanish militia and then fought against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto (1571) where a gunshot wound permanently crippled his left hand. He spent four more years at sea and then another five as a slave after being captured by Barbary pirates. Ransomed by his family, he returned to Madrid but his disability hampered him; it was in debtor's prison that he began to write Don Quixote . The title character , a dreamy middle-aged nobleman, sets out through Spain on a makeshift quest to fight injustice through acts of chivalry. Cervantes wrote many other works, including poems and plays, but none had the impact or popularity of his masterpiece. Extra credit : Because of his injury Cervantes was nicknamed "the cripple of Levanto"...

MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA
Actually if you were to know of only one Spanish novelist (which would be a shame), you probably could not pick a more interesting individual than Cervantes. Cervantes was born in 1547 in the town of Alcalá de Henares. He became a soldier in Italy in 1570 and lost the use of his left hand in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Attempting to sail back to Spain in 1575, he is captured by Algerian pirates, attempted to escape 3 times and was finally ransomed. Returning to Spain was not the end of his troubles. He was not initially successful in his writing and was twice jailed for debt and falsifying bookkeeping records. He finally began to achieve success around 1606 (he was already by then almost 60 years old!). This success continued to his death on April 23, 1616, which is the same day that William Shakespeare died. He published in 1606 (in two installments) Don Quixote. The novel received immediate acclaim and he was recognized as one of the greatest authors of his time. Previous to that he had also written La Galatea and while writing Don Quixote also wrote Novelas Ejemplares (Exemplary Stories) which was published in 1613. Cervantes was not only a novelist. He also in his lifetime publish several collection of poems and a number of plays, most of which are still performed today.
