Life and Works:

A Spanish novelist, playwright, and poet, the creator of Don Quixote Shakespeare , Cervantes's great contemporary, had evidently read Don Quixote , but it is most unlike that Cervantes had ever heard of Shakespeare When his wound was healed he engaged in another campaign, one directed against the Moslem in Northern Africa, and then after living a while longer in Italy he finally determined to return home in 1575. The ship was captured by the Turks and the brothers were taken to Algiers as slaves. There he spent five years, undergoing great sufferings, some of which seem to be reflected in the episode of the "Captive" in Don Quixote , and in scenes of the play, El trato de Argel , and after four unsuccessful escape attempts, he was ransomed by the Trinitarians and returned to his family in Madrid in 1580. In 1584 he married 22 years younger Catalina de Salazar y Palacios. During the next 20 years he led a nomadic existence, also working as a purchasing agent for the Spanish Armada and a tax collector. He suffered a bankruptcy and was imprisoned at least twice (1597 and 1602) because of irregularities in his accounts, one due rather to some subordinate than to himself. Between the years 1596 and 1600 he lived primarily in Seville. In 1606 Cervantes settled permanently in Madrid, where he remained the rest of his life.

Introduction
Print this section Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), Spanish writer, considered by many to be the greatest Spanish author, whose novel Don Quixote (Part I, 1605; Part II, 1615) is regarded as one of the masterpieces of world literature. Because of his eloquent style and remarkable insight, Cervantes has achieved acclaim comparable to that given to such literary greats as Greek poet Homer , Italian poet Dante Alighieri , and English playwright William Shakespeare II
Life
Print this section Cervantes was born in Alcal¡ de Henares. In 1568, when he was a student, a number of his poems appeared in a volume published in Madrid, Spain, to commemorate the death of the Spanish queen Elizabeth of Valois. In 1569 Cervantes went to Rome, where in the following year he began working for Giulio Cardinal Acquaviva. Soon afterward Cervantes joined a Spanish military regiment in Naples, Italy. He fought in 1571 against the Ottoman Empire in the

A RTICLE Cide Hamete Benengeli vs. Miguel de Cervantes: The Metafictional Dialectic of Don Quijote H OWARD M ANCING HE SELF-REFLECTIVE narrative technique of Don Quijote has fascinated and baffled the novel's readers since the very beginning. The metafictional concerns dealt with in the work were clearly of interest to Cervantes himself, and they have been recognized implicitly by novelists from Laurence Sterne to Carlos Fuentes. In recent years the novel's narrative structure has been the subject of critical studies by John J. Allen, Robert Alter, Ruth El Saffar, Colbert I. Nepaulsingh, James A. Parr, Helena Percas de Ponseti, and E. C. Riley, among others.
In this essay I propose to examine the levels of narration in Don Quijote in such a way as to distinguish among the specific narrative voices and discuss the implications of these distinctions for how we read the book. It is my contention that some technical and stylistic clues exist that enable us to discern more precisely than ever before the role and personality of Cide Hamete Benengeli. The metafictional dialectic developed between the Arabic author and Miguel de Cervantes, his editor, is established in Part I, but only fully developed and given prominence in Part II. Don Quixote . Tradition has it that he wrote it while in prison at Argamasilla in La Manchia. The book was first published in 1605; a second part came out in 1615. Don Quixote has been described as "... that genial and just judge of imposture, folly, vanity, affectation, and insincerity; that tragic picture of the brave man born out of his time, too proud and too just to be of use in his age!" (Frederic Harrison, 1831-1923.) Sir Walter Raleigh (1861-1922) wrote this about Don Quixote Don Quixote

Cervantes created a fictional origin for the story in the character of the Moor historian, Cide Hamete Benengeli, whom he claims to have hired to translate the story from an Arabic manuscript he found in Toledo's bedraggled old quarter. The protagonist, Alonso Quixano, has read so many stories of chivalry that he descends into fantasy and becomes convinced he is a knight errant. Together with his companion Sancho Panza, the self-styled Don Quixote de la Mancha sets out in search of adventures. His "lady" is Dulcinea del Toboso, an imaginary object of his courtly love crafted from a neighbouring farmgirl by the illusion-struck "knight" (her real name is Aldonza Lorenzo, and she is totally unaware of his feelings for her. In addition, she never actually appears in the novel. It is doubtful she even exists). Published in two volumes a decade apart, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age and perhaps the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, it regularly appears at or near the top of lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published.

Antonio Gamoneda has been awarded the 2006 Miguel de Cervates Prize, which annually recognises the lifetime work of a poet who writes in Spanish. The prize, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, is worth $120,000. Gamoneda, who was born in 1931 and published his first collection in 1960, is perhaps best known for Libro del fro (1992) and Arden las p©rdidas (2003). To the best of my knowledge, none of his works are available in English.

      Plot Summary
Cervantes introduces his book, calling it the "child of his brain," but later on referring to it as his stepchild instead. He calls on a friend for help when he finds himself stymied by the writing of the prologue, and the friend laughs that he is having such trouble over something so small and inconsequential compared to the massive volume. The friend advises he should include "sonnets, epigrams, and eulogies," as well as many impressive notes at the end of the book. He also advises to insert quotes from authors according to a book that lists them A to Z. Cervantes notes his luck in this conversation, for now he has fodder for his prologue.
