Proverbs

A good name is better than bags of gold.
Reputation
A little instrument of mighty power. Quill A man dishonored is worse than dead. Scandal A shy face is better than a forward heart. Bashfulness All beauty does not inspire love. Some please the sight without captivating the affections. Beauty All persons are not discreet enough to know how to take things by the right handle. Discretion Among the attributes of God, although they are all equal, mercy shines with even more brilliancy than justice. Mercy An honest man's word is as good as his bond. Honesty Be not under the dominion of thine own will; it is the vice of the ignorant, who vainly presume on their own understanding. Self-will Be slow of tongue and quick of eye.

Miguel de Cervantes
Miguel de Cervantes was born in Alcal¡, Spain in 1547. Little is known of his early career. In 1571, he fought in Italy, where he was seriously wounded by harquebus shot and almost lost his left hand, and later participated in the campaigns of Juan of Austria. During the voyage back to Spain, he was captured by Algerian corsairs and spent five years as a slave in Algiers, during which he tried to escape four times, before he was ransomed and returned to his family. In 1585, a few months after his marriage, Cervantes published La Galatea , his first novel. At the same time, several of his plays, now lost, were performed in Madrid. Two years later he traveled to Andalusia, where he spent ten years and encountered money problems with the government that led to a jail term in 1597. In 1605, Cervantes returned to the literary scene with the successful publication of the first part of

To the book of Don Quixote of la Mancha
If to be welcomed by the good, O Book! thou make thy steady aim, No empty chatterer will dare To question or dispute thy claim. But if perchance thou hast a mind To win of idiots approbation, Lost labour will be thy reward, Though they'll pretend appreciation.
They say a goodly shade he finds Who shelters 'neath a goodly tree; And such a one thy kindly star In Bejar bath provided thee: A royal tree whose spreading boughs A show of princely fruit display; A tree that bears a noble Duke, The Alexander of his day.
Of a Manchegan gentleman Thy purpose is to tell the story, Relating how he lost his wits O'er idle tales of love and glory, Of "ladies, arms, and cavaliers:" A new Orlando Furioso- Innamorato, rather- who Won Dulcinea del Toboso.
Put no vain emblems on thy shield; All figures- that is bragging play. A modest dedication make, And give no scoffer room to say, "What! Alvaro de Luna here? Or is it Hannibal again? Or does King Francis at Madrid Once more of destiny complain?"

Biography of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616)
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Cervantes was born in Alcala de Henares, a town 20 miles from Madrid, on September 29, 1547. He was named Miguel for Saint Michael, whose patron day is September 29. Being the son of a barber-surgeon, he traveled around a lot, moving wherever his father's services were needed. His family was large; he was only the fourth son out of what was to become seven children in total. Not much is known about his educational background. It is supposed that he studied under the Jesuits as a child and in his late teens and very early twenties, under the tutelage of the principal of a municipal school in Madrid named Juan Lopez de Hoyos. Unlike most writers of his time, he apparently did not go to university. In 1570, he left Spain for Italy, a move usually done by the Spaniards of his time to further their careers. Once there he joined the Spanish infantry in Naples. Around this time, the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the countries in the Mediterranean were very much strained. This was due to the fact that the Ottoman Empire was quickly expanding its power over these countries. In 1571, a Turkish fleet invaded Cyprus, an island country near Greece. This move made the confrontation between the Turks and the Spanish infantries located in nearby Italy inevitable. Cervantes valiantly fought in the Gulf of Lepanto, an area near Greece. He was badly wounded in his left hand and thus earned the nickname "Manco de Lepanto" (Maimed of Lepanto). After that, he continued fighting in the Mediterranean.

Miguel de Cervantes: Don Quixote (1605)
Of the good fortune which the valiant Don Quixote had in the Terrible and Undreamed-of Adventure of the Windmills, with Other Occurrences Worthy to be Fitly Recorded
Don Quixote is typical of the Renaissance in the way that it satirizes the chivalric traditions of the Middle Ages as absurdly old-fashioned. The crazed and impoverished Spanish noble who sets out to revive the glory of knighthood has been romanticized in the popular modern musical, The Man of La Mancha; but Cervantes has little compassion for the "impossible dreams" of his protagonist, who refuses to face facts even when he is hit over the head with them. Even though his relatives have taken away the chivalric romances which they think have driven him mad and tried to confine him, he has escaped with his squire Sancho Panza who is much less learned but a good deal saner than his master. How does Don Quixote seem to think a knight should behave? At this point they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that are on that plain. "Fortune," said Don Quixote to his squire, as soon as he had seen them, "is arranging matters for us better than we could have hoped. Look there, friend Sancho Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants rise up, all of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we shall begin to make our fortunes. For this is righteous warfare, and it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of the earth."

    Don Quixote

Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) the famous Spanish novelist and poet, was born in Alcalá de Henares, a small town near Madrid. Cervantes created Don Quixote, the most prominent figure in Spanish literature of all the time.
Cervantes life was full of journeys and adventures. He spent most of his childhood moving from town to town while his father Rodrigo de Cervantes was looking for work.
He studied in Madrid between 1568 and 1569.
In 1570 Cervantes participated in the sea battle at Lepanto (1571), where his left hand was permanently wounded. He earned his nickname in this battle – “el manco de Lepanto” (the cripple of Lepanto).
In 1575 Cervantes set out with his brother Rodrigo on the galley “El Sol” for Spain. Pirates captured their ship and the brothers were taken to Algiers as slaves. Cervantes spent five years as a slave awaiting his family to raise enough money to pay his ransom. Cervantes was released in 1580, with the payment of 500 escudos raised by his family. He returned to Madrid where he held several temporary administrative posts.
In 1584 Miguel de Cervantes married Catalina de Salazar y Palacios, who was 18 years younger than him. He left her in the late 1580s.
