C. P. Cavafy: C. P. Cavafy (1863-1933) was born to Greek parents in Alexandria, Egypt, where he spent most of his life. He preferred to circulate his poems privately in broadsheets and pamphlets, which he gave to trusted friends. He withheld nearly a third of his work, including the most homoerotic, from the public eye. The first collected edition of his poems was published posthumously in 1935. But during his life, his friend E. M. Forster championed his work in the English-speaking world, introducing it to renowned modernists, among them D. H. Lawrence and T. S. Eliot, who published "Ithaka" in his journal, Criterion . Now Cavafy is revered as the most innovative and internationally influential Greek writer of the twentieth century, and one of the world's greatest poets. Aliki Barnstone: Aliki Barnstone is a poet, translator, editor, and critic whose translations have appeared in American Poetry Review, TriQuarterly, Virginia Quarterly Review

The God Abandons Antony Posted in C P Cavafy Lawrence Durrell Poetry When suddenly at darkest midnight heard,
The invisible company passing, the clear voices,
Ravishing music of invisible choirs -
Your fortunes having failed you now,
Hopes gone aground, a lifetime of desires
Turned into smoke. Ah! Do not agonize
    At what is past deceiving
But like a man long since prepared
With courage say your last good-byes
To Alexandria as she is leaving.

    Very Seldom Analysis
Author: poem of C.P. Cavafy Type: poem Views:
He's an old man. Used up and bent,
    crippled by time and indulgence,
he slowly walks along the narrow street.
But when he goes inside his house to hide
the shambles of his old age, his mind turns
to the share in youth that still belongs to him.
His verse is now recited by young men.
His visions come before their lively eyes. Their healthy sensual minds, their shapely taut bodies stir to his perception of the beautiful. Trans. by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard

    C.P. Cavafy
My last employment was as a clerk at a government office under the Ministry of Public Works of Egypt. I know English, French, and a little Italian." So wrote C. P. Cavafy in 1910. I've been reading his poems while waiting for my dreadful cold to retreat. Here's one of his most unsettling ones: The City You said, "I will go to another land, I will go to another sea.
Another city will be found, better than this.
    Every effort of mine is condemned by fate;
How long in this wasteland will my mind remain.
Wherever I turn my eyes, wherever I may look
I see the black ruins of my life here,
where I spent so many years, and ruined and wasted." New lands you will not find, you will not find other seas.
The city will follow you. You will roam the same
    streets. And you will age in the same neighborhoods;
in these same houses you will grow gray.
there is no ship for you, there is no road. As you have ruined your life here in this little corner, you have destroyed it in the whole world. Cavafy was born on 29 April 1863 and died on the same date in 1933 in Alexandria.

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.

you'll never find the things like that on your way

as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
    Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won't encounter them unless you bring them along inside your soul, unless your soul sets them up in front of you. Hope your road is a long one. May there be many summer mornings when, with what pleasure, what joy, you enter harbors you're seeing for the first time; may you stop at Phoenician trading stations to buy fine things, mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony. sensual perfume of every kind- as many sensual perfumes as you can; and may you visit many Egyptian cities to learn and go on learning from their scholars. Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you're destined for. But don't hurry the journey at all.
