By James Campbell / The New York Times Published: November 17, 2006 document.writeln(''); E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size Neal Cassady. The Fast Life of a Beat Hero. By David Sandison and Graham Vickers. Illustrated. 340 pages. $24.95. Chicago Review Press. In 1948, Allen Ginsberg's father wrote him a two-word letter: "Exorcise Neal." Neal was Neal Cassady, who Ginsberg senior feared was leading his already unstable son farther down the road to perdition. Raised on Denver's skid row, Cassady met Ginsberg and other members of the forming Beat circle in New York in 1946, after driving East in a stolen car with his 16-year-old bride, LuAnne Henderson, and a purse full of money taken from her relatives. By the age of 21, Cassady boasted of 500 vehicle thefts. He served several terms in prison, including a two-year stretch for drug dealing in the late 1950s, shortly after the publication of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," in which he features as Dean Moriarty. A full-scale biography of the maddest of the "mad ones" that Kerouac extolled in "On the Road" seems like a good idea. Carolyn's presence is much to the fore in "Neal Cassady," where she is thanked for her "unstinting help." The biographers are hardly to be blamed for making the most of it, but the result is that the character who dashes through their pages is at once overfamiliar, from her superhumanly forgiving account and Kerouac's worshipful one, and underdeveloped. The stories of his arrival in New York, the first meetings with the Ginsberg circle at Columbia, the cross-continental harum-scarum with Sal Paradise and Marylou (as Kerouac and LuAnne are called in "On the Road"), need reconditioning if they are to be made to run again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NEAL CASSADY
Born in Salt Lake City
Eighty years ago today
In a fast-moving cross-country car
Or so you told us.
Were you alive, you'd be toothless, bloated
A disappointment
Not the young and handsome
Neal we know
Disheveled, drunk and Devil-may-care
Eternally tossing that hammer
Up into the air... photograph of Neal Cassady by Allen Ginsberg posted by cpbvk at 3:46 AM

Neal Cassady b. Feb. 8, 1926 d. Feb. 4, 1968 Blessed with beauty, intelligence, magnetism and a huge supply of life force, Neal Cassady was the real-life inspiration for Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road , the 1957 novel that set the beat generation in motion. He is also the "N.C., secret hero of these poems" mentioned in Alan Ginsberg's Howl Cassady went to Columbia University with Kerouac and Ginsberg, inspiring lifelong love and devotion in the two and in many others, including his second wife Carolyn. In Off the Road: My Years with Cassady, Kerouac, and Ginsberg (William Morris, 1990) she recounts how Neal turned her on to marijuana, telling her: "Now darling, listen to me. You must have no fear, hear me? It is completely harmless, I promise you. All the tales you're doubtless heard are entirely false, perpetrated by Anslinger and his boys to keep up employment in the narcotic squads. All this does is heighten your sensory perception, awaken your own true awareness and speed up your thought processes while giving the impression that time has immeasurably slowed. You'll see more and see betterÉcolorsÉpatternsÉyou'll hear every note of every instrument, simultaneously. You'll be amazed at how much you usually missÉYou think you've heard music? You've never heard it until you hear it on teaÉ.Then, after a while, we'll dig into that delicious pie you've made and which we were too full to eat, and you'll taste as you never have beforeÉpure ambrosia, you'll see."

Reader comment on: Jack Kerouac's Long-Distance Sprint
Submitted by sylvia
Aug 23, 2007 22:54 I met Neal in 1967 at Ken Kesey's home in La Honda, CA. It was fleeting but electric. Not knowing who he was, I knew he was somebody. He was probably the oldest person there and with the youngest girl there. I never saw him standing still - and that's not to say he was walking or dancing. He was perpetual motion as though he were plugged into an electric outlet. Glad I met him. Note: Comments are screened, and in some cases edited, before posting. This is a biographical drama based on the life of Neal Cassady, made famous by his character Dean Moriarty in Kerouac's "On the Road". Currently running the festival circuit, it's written and directed by Noah Buschel and adapted from his award winning play of the same name. (Oddly enough Buschel was ordained as a Zen priest.) The movie stars Tate Donavan as Neal Cassady and Glenn Fitzgerald as Jack Kerouac.

More on Neal Cassady (Kerouac's Dean Moriarty)
His death at age Mexico in 1968, Cassady wandered onto a deserted railroad, intending to walk fifteen miles to the next town. He fell asleep on the way, wearing only a t-shirt and jeans. It was a cold rainy night, and Cassady was found beside the tracks the next morning. He was in a coma, and died in a hospital later that day. The rumor is Cassady's last words were "Sixty-Four Thousand Nine Hundred and Twenty-Eight". This was supposedly how many railroad ties he had couted before his death. Kessey wrote a wonderful story about recieving the news of Cassady's death entitled "The Day After Superman Died"

A movement arose among the artists of 1950s America as a reaction to the time's prevailing conformity and affluence whose members attempted to extract all they could from life, often in a strikingly self-destructive way. Specifically, the Beat writers and jazz musicians of the era found escape from society in drugs and fast living. But what exactly led so many to this dangerous path? Why did they choose drugs and speed to implement their rebellion? A preliminary look at the contradictions that prevailed in 1950s American society may give some insight into these artists' world. 60. Neal Cassady's Biography
neal cassady, one of the most famous personalities behind the Beat literary movement, never published a book during his lifetime.
    http://www.angelfire.com/mo/abalot/nealcassady.html
Neal Cassady, one of the most famous personalities behind the Beat literary movement, never published a book during his lifetime. He did appear as a main character in many books, though, including On the Road , by Jack Kerouac (he's Dean Moriarty, the "holy goof"), The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test , by Tom Wolfe (he's "Further"'s bus driver), and Go , by John Clellon Holmes. Cassady was a Beat hero and occasional writer, often described as a personification of "fast living high on jazz and drugs, sex, and freedom." Neal Cassady was born on February 8, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised by an alcoholic father in the skid row hotels of Denver's Larimer Street. Between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one he stole more than 500 cars. Cassady possessed a unique ability to charm (and swindle) strangers, although he never seemed to want to con anybody out of more than a ten-dollar bill or a good conversation. He spent a lot of time in reform schools and juvenile prisons during his youth. A friend named Hal Chase left Denver to enroll at Columbia University, and Cassady traveled to New York to visit him in December 1946. It was there that he met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg/a>. Cassady began asking Kerouac to help him learn to write fiction. Ginsberg immediately fell in love with Cassady, writing numerous poems about him (as in
