Born in Salt Lake City and raised by an alcoholic father in Denver , Cassady spent much of his youth bouncing between skid-row hotels with his father and reform schools for car theft. In 1946 Cassady met Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg at Columbia University in New York and quickly became friends with them and the circle of artists and writers there. He had a sexual relationship with Ginsberg that lasted off and on for the next twenty years, and he later traveled cross-country with Kerouac. Cassady proved to be the catalyst for the Beat Movement, appearing as the characters Dean Moriarty and Cody Pomeray in many of Kerouac's novels. Ginsberg mentioned him as well in his ground-breaking poem

Howl ' by Allen Ginsberg The real genius behind the Beat movement in literature never published a book during his life. He appeared as a main character in many books, though, from 'Go' by John Clellon Holmes to 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac to 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' by Tom Wolfe. His free-flowing letter writing style inspired the young Kerouac to break his ties to the sentimental style he'd picked up from Thomas Wolfe and invent his notion of 'spontaneous prose.' Without Neal Cassady, the Beat Generation would never have happened. Neal Cassady was born on February 8, 1926 and raised by an alcoholic father in the skid row hotels of Denver 's Larimer Street. A car thief with a unique ability to charm strangers,he spent time in reform schools and juvenile prisons and developed the suave instincts of a con artist, although he never seemed to want to con anybody out of more than a ten-dollar bill, a roll in the hay or a good conversation. A friend named Hal Chase left Denver to enroll at Columbia University , and Cassady traveled to New York to visit him in December 1946. It was here that he met Kerouac and Ginsberg. Ginsberg immediately fell in love with him, and Cassady, who had a hustler's instinct to be whatever the person he's with wants him to be, began a sexual relationship with Ginsberg, balancing it with the numerous heterosexual relationships he enjoyed more. At the same time, he persuaded Kerouac to teach him how to write fiction.

Episode One: Neal Cassady OK, the first soundbytez podcast is the gonna be the very same item I was listening to when I decided to start SoundBytez.
Neal Cassady (February 8, 1926 – February 4, 1968) was many things, a heretic, a prophet, a drug addict and even a hero to some. Most probably he was unknown to most.
My exposure to Casady came through my interest in books like Jack Kerouac's "On The Road" and Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", both of which played a strong role in my drug induced upbringing. Kerouac's indispensable side kick, partner in crime was indeed Neal Cassady (aka "Dean Moriarty") a persona filled with a 90 mph stream of consciousness that championed the Merry Pranksers as one of the strongest mythical icons to many of us psychadelic drug users. especially the ones who came onto the scene well after the height of Haight Ashbury and were looking for guidance form the "elders". Neal has stayed in my unconscious, and I was quite interested when I found this audio file.

Neal Cassady, one of the most enigmatic of the Beat personalities, did not publish a book during his lifetime. Rather he was a driving inspiration to his friends, appearing often in their writings; the character of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
Born on the road on February 18, 1926 enroute from Des Moines, Iowa to California, Neal's recently married parents pulled their top-heavy Ford house-truck into Salt Lake City, where Maude Cassady gave birth to her ninth child in a charity hospital. After the Cassady's arrived in Hollywood, Neal Sr. opened a barbershop on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, and the future looked promising.
Each morning Neal made his way to the Metropolitan's communal bathroom, encountering men with the D.T.'s along the way. He dressed himself and went to the mission, where he had his breakfast of oatmeal, toast and coffee. He watched the poker and pinochle games in the lobby of the Metropolitan, and each Saturday he went to the Zaza barbershop, where his father, smelling of pomade and talcum, worked the third chair.
Neal recalled this as the idyllic period of his youth. It ended when he moved into the Snowden Apartments with his mother, his baby sister and his 12 year old half-brother, Jimmy. Although life with his mother in a real home ostensibly offered a more nurturing atmosphere for a child, Jimmy was a sadist. He had previously drowned cats in toilets, and he now saw Neal as his victim - in - residence, incarcerating him in the Murphy bed.

Who knew? Did he? The stubborn, ungraspable hope that became the obsession of the prisoned spirit in his body. ~John Clellon Holmes Why'd he come on that bus trip anyway? It happened in '64.

Literary and travel bio of Neal Cassady. Biographies, photos, quotes, links and bibliographies of influential Beat Movement writers and artists from a road culture perspective.
    Neal Cassady
Neal Cassady, legendary folk hero in the Beat movement, was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to a life of hardship, married three times, and was immortalized as Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's "On The Road". Cassady was a car thief and minor con-man who spent much of his earlier years in reform schools and juvenile detention centers.
    Jack Kerouac
joined Neal Cassady on several road trips across the United States and Mexico, writing about their experiences, sometimes as they were happening, while Cassady generally led the way. These adventures were culminated in the pages of "On The Road". Kerouac included Cassady's persona in several later novels, such as "Dharma Bums" and "Visions of Cody". Cassady reportedly appealed to Kerouac to teach him how to write fiction, but of all of the prominent Beats of the generation, he was the least prolific. His only book, an unfinished autobiography titled "The First Third", was published by City Lights Books in 1971 a few years after his death. It details his life as a wide-eyed boy growing up with a wino father and crooked half-siblings.

The new and old Beatnicks celebrate Neal Cassady's birthday
By Tom Foremski, Silicon Valley Watcher It's a warm Wednesday evening in North Beach San Francisco and it is Neal Cassady's 80th birthday and the remnants of the Beat generation, Jack Kerouac's remaining drinking buddies, are inside a small storefront. It is also the opening of the Beat Museum, and I'm there with my buddy Paul Hrisko to chat with Neal Cassady's son John, and visit with a slice of San Francisco's history from the late 1950s. I've become very interested in the Beat generation, the mostly East Coast/New York intellectuals that came to San Francisco, and were chosen by the media to represent the rebellious youth of those times. From Wikipedia : "The members of the beat generation were new bohemian libertines, who engaged in a spontaneous, sometimes messy, creativity. The beat writers produced a body of written work controversial both for its advocacy of non-conformity and for its non-conforming style... . . . Echoes of the Beat Generation run throughout all the forms of alternative/counter culture that have existed since then (e.g. "hippies", "punks", etc). The Beat Generation can be seen as the first modern "subculture"."

    Paul Bowles
Paul Bowles began as a composer of orchestral music. It was only after he married his wife, Jane Bowles, a writer, that he began writing seriously. They moved to Tangier, Morocco in 1947, where Bowles wrote his first novel "The Sheltering Sky," which was followed by "The Delicate Prey," "Let it Come Down," "The Spider's House," and various other books. Though not actually one of the Beats, he associated with many of them (including William Burroughs, who lived in Tangier a time), and eventually Tangier (and his apartment there) became a popular destination for the Beats. Paul Bowles died in Tangier in 1999.
