  • Honeybuzzard
"The characters in Angela Carter's first novel live in 'the twilight zone,' on the underside of respectable English life. . . . They are grotesque, these people, yet familiar. . . . The result is a most entertaining piece of piracy, and most accomplished novel."
  • Several Perceptions
". . . marred by some unconvincing dialogue and a good deal of overwriting. . . . The first three-quarters of the book gives a powerful account of the horror, the logic and the poetry of the schizophrenic's world. The end, however, is rather disappointing."
  • Heroes and Villains
"Though set in the future, its imagery and references are continually to the art of the past . . . Carter tells her story with considerable skill. Her observation is sharp, and she writes extremely well"
  • The War of Dreams
"Angela Carter is at her best with details. Scrupulously, she builds the foundations of her myth out of hundreds of small observations. . . . This is not to say that 'The War of Dreams' is without problems."

Exploration of the role of narrative techniques in Nights at the Circus. By Brian Finney.

Tall Tales and Brief Lives: Angela Carter's Nights at the Circus
Nights at the Circus Nights at the Circus takes as its subject the hypnotic power of narrative, the ways in which we construct ourselves and our world by narrative means, the materiality of fiction and the fictionality of the material world, and the contract between writer and reader that, according to Carter, invites the reader at the end of this book "to take one further step into the fictionality of the narrative, instead of coming out of it and looking at it as though it were an artefact" (Haffenden 91). It is not just Fevvers who triumphs at having fooled Walser. It is Carter gloating over having fooled the reader into following her own narrative to this end point - and beyond.
What this suggests is that this entire novel operates in an important way as a form of metanarrative: one of its main concerns is with the potentialities and limits of the act of narration. On reflection one remembers that many of Carter's other works of fiction begin by making the narrative act their subject. The "Introduction" to The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972) opens with "I remember everything" (11). Four pages later Chapter 1 opens: "I cannot remember exactly how it began" (15). Memory is part of the bewilderingly contradictory nature of the art of narration. "Flesh and the Mirror," a story collected in

    Arts and Artists
F ine art, that exists for itself alone, is art in a final state of impotence. If nobody, including the artist, acknowledges art as a means of knowing the world, then art is relegated to a kind of rumpus room of the mind and the irresponsibility of the artist and the irrelevance of art to actual living becomes part and parcel of the practice of art.
    God
M other goddesses are just as silly a notion as father gods. If a revival of the myths of these cults gives woman emotional satisfaction, it does so at the price of obscuring the real conditions of life. This is why they were invented in the first place.
    Mothers
T he kind of power mothers have is enormous. Take the skyline of Istanbul enormous breasts, pathetic little willies, a final revenge on Islam. I was so scared I had to crouch in the bottom of the boat when I saw it.
    Relationships
I n the mythic schema of all relations between men and women, man proposes, and woman is disposed of.

ANGELA CARTER'S novel Wise Children is a rollicking text that tells a lively story with satirical wit and wry, bawdy observation. Even without analysis, it stands on its own as an engaging story, with a few (well, all right more than a few) stretched coincidences and a mischievously humorous narrator. On the other hand, the text is packed with allusions : it affectionately satirizes the "showbiz" scenes of the era, evokes Shakespeare often in the most unexpected ways on virtually every page, contains both vivid and subtle manifestations of Magical Realism, chucks in some postmodern motifs and then sprinkles in a few scenes of carnivalesque vigour to add extra spice to an already potent goulash. Of course, naming every manifestation of structural or explicit allusion or satire could become tiresome for both myself and the reader plus, it would take all the fun and spontenaiety out of reading the book. Before we go any further, be warned that this is not a review of

Wednesday, 18 January 2006 Death, as any biographer knows, can be an excellent career move. Mozart died a pauper, but the nation that spawned him is currently awash with little chocolate balls in his name. The novelist Angela Carter did not die a pauper, but at times she lived like one. For much of her far-too-short life, her books were remaindered and out of print. Less than 14 years after her death, however, she seems set for a whole new lease of life. On Friday, this most theatrical of writers hits the stage of the Lyric, Hammersmith, with an adaptation of Nights at the Circus. In July, Vintage will reissue six of her works with new introductions and in June the South Bank Centre will hold a day of talks on her legacy. 2006 will, it seems, be the year to get Carter. All very nice, but why now?

    The Sadeian Woman:
    And the Ideology of Pornography
    Angela Carter
Penguin 2001 A book review by Danny Yee Warning: the subject material may disturb some The Sadeian Woman is a feminist reading of the Marquis de Sade, who is seen as a "moral pornographer" putting pornography into the service of women, or at least creating room within it for "an ideology not inimical to women". Though Carter provides some biographical background, her focus is on three of Sade's novels. In Justine the eponymous heroine suffers repeated rape, torture, humiliation, and degradation, forever escaping from one abuser only to fall into the hands of another. She is acted on rather than acts, feels rather than reasons, and is the perfect victim. Carter sees her as a spiritual ancestor of film stars such as Marilyn Monroe. Her career is a "desecration of the Temple", an inversion of the unnatural reverence accorded to women as Mothers and Wives. Philosophy in the Boudoir the fifteen year old Eug©nie receives an education in depravity, in a series of lessons in transgression culminating in her rape and mutilation of her mother.
