Credits The Infernal Desire Machines of Angela Carter I. An Introduction Carter's maiden name was Stalker, perhaps more fitting than the surname of her first husband, which she retained as her own. The daughter of socialists, Carter grew up in South London. All of her immediate female relatives were strong women of striking candor and pragmatism. And yet, paradoxically, Carter fought to overcome teenage anorexia caused by low self-esteem. Well-off but pro-active, Carter anguished over the closing of mines and the breaking of mining strikes in the 1960s, and over the failures of the socialist revolution in general.(1) While a student at Bristol College, Carter hung out in sidewalk cafes and at smoky backroom poetry readings. In addition to absorbing the bohemian nightlife, Carter studied psychology and anthropology. She also developed a strong liking for Rimbaud and Racine, and for French literature in general. A devout atheist who first dabbled in poetry and journalism, she metamorphosed into one of the most original writers of the post-World War II period. Her creativity was fed by travels to Japan and Russia that greatly influenced her fiction. When she did finally come to the United States, it was almost as an afterthought, although she captured the essence of the country in

This book is number 96 on the London Observer's "100 Greatest Novels" list, and more than likely, had it not been for me finding that list and deciding that I was going to read them all, I probably would never have heard of this books, much less have read it. And so I would like to say, "Thank you, London Observer!"
I was greatly surprised and delighted by the book. It is so much different from the things I normally read. As we have pretty firmly established, I am a historical fiction girl, and by that we generally mean British history around the time of Henry the VIII or American History around the time of the American Revolution. And this, instead, is Britain and a small bit of America in the 20th century revolving around the theater.
The characters of Nora and Dora Chance are hilarious. They are funny and sad, smart and frivolous, and Dora tells the story of their lives so colorfully and shamelessly. I absolutely loved them, and definitely plan on looking into reading more by Angela Carter.
This book did bring to a head a question I have started to develop after reading other books, generally by British authors, but...do the British have a different idea of what constitutes incest? Is it okay for people to...do stuff with their aunts and uncles? Hmmm...maybe this is a question for my sister's British boyfriend.

"Black Venus" - Jeanne Duval and Charles Baudelaire
Revisited by Angela Carter
Susanne Schmid (Berlin)
Angela Carter , mythomaniac and demythologiser, rewriter of the Western canon, focusses on the shattering of male myths about femininity. She presents archetypal virgins and monsters and gives a voice to women who have figured as objects in (male) literature without being allowed to tell their own stories: Leda in The Magic Toyshop , the biblical Eve in Heroes and Villains and Mignon in Nights at the Circus . Women who have frequently been described in the literary tradition are not only given the opportunity to present their view of the events, they also become agents, being allowed to influence their own lives. Thus, Mignon, who is given a complete biography, does not die but 'lives happily ever after' (Steedman 1992) , Leda is allowed to watch herself being avenged on the swan, and Eve can leave God and Adam dying in a post-apocalyptic paradise, in which she takes over the power. Whereas much feminist criticism has been centred on the making and breaking of images of women, the intertextual references by authors such as Angela Carter have been regarded as a secondary issue. If one wants to comprehend the cutting edge of Carter's criticism as regards male myths of femininity, however, one needs to concentrate on her playful way of dealing with mythic references. In a postmodern bricolage, Carter uses European literature as a "scrapyard" (Carter 1985: 92), from which she takes bits and pieces, rearranging them in a way that exposes the constructedness of the reality that they depict.

Angela (Olive) Carter (1940-1992) English short story writer, novelist, journalist, dramatist and critic. Carter was a notable exponent of magic realism , adding into it Gothic themes, postmodernist eclecticism, violence, and eroticism. Throughout her career, Carter utilized the language and characteristic motifs of the fantasy genre. "A good writer can make you believe time stands still," she once said. Her work represents a successful combination of post-modern literary theories and feminist politics. Carter died in 1992 at the age of fifty-one. "-Then the city vanished; it ceased, almost immediately, to be a magic and appalling place. I woke up one morning and found it had become a home. Though I still turn up my coat collar in a lonely way and am always looking at myself in mirrors, they're only habits and give no clue at all to my character, whatever that is.
The most difficult performance in the world is acting naturally, isn't it? Everything else is artful."

An Interview with Angela Carter By Anna Katsavos [(c) 1994]
Crammed in with all the other gear packed for a ski trip was my copy of Angela Carter's newest novel, Wise Children . Because sheer exhaustion made it difficult for me to stay awake past nine o'clock, I didn't get to finish the book, which in a sad kind of way turned out to be a good thing. A week later I returned home to a stack of unread newspapers and very sorrowful news; while I had been struggling with moguls, Carter had succumbed to cancer. Though my dealings with her were limited (a few letters, phone calls, and two personal meetings), the sense of loss that I experienced was deep-felt. I immediately went for my copy of Wise Children , and for a long time gazed at the picture of the author's smiling face on the inside jacket; it was the same picture as the one in the Times's obit. Mixed in with my numbness was a peculiar sense of gratitude that there was something new she could say to me still. I began to read, but my thoughts kept reverting to that crisp November morning in 1988 when I had the pleasure of chatting with this woman over breakfast. We met in the lobby of a well-known New York hotel, where she introduced me to Alexander, her son, who was off with his father to spend a few hours sightseeing in the big city. (Their arrangementsto meet at noon by the big clock in front of F.A.O. Schwarzmade me chuckle; recalling the clocks, magic, and toys in Carter's fiction, I thought that New York's own magic toyshop was, of course, the most fitting place to meet.)
