Welcome to a new Poetry Society for Glasgow
Our aims are straightforward: to give Glasgow readers and audiences the opportunity to hear some of the best poets in the UK and from abroad and to put on a series of events that are entertaining and informative. We will bring to Glasgow some of the best poets in the world and when they come they will read and answer questions about their work. Some will offer a workshop and tutorial session. Poets who have already said yes (and wished the venture well) include, Simon Armitage, Ciaran Carson, Jo Shapcott, WN Herbert, Andrew Greig, Ron Butlin, Colette Bryce, Vicki Feaver and Richard Price. We also take this opportunity to thank our other sponsors: the Department of English Studies, University of Strathclyde, The Tom Wright Memorial Trust, Glasgow City Council, Venture Connections and Waterstones.
Membership of the Glasgow Poetry Society
Beyond these readings, we will have themed events, programmes run in association with cultural partners in the fields of film, music, theatre, sport and the visual arts.

A woodland tribe, they farmed, hunted, and gathered wild berries. Their society was based on a system of clans, with women heading households. Then, in the 1700s the first people of European descent made their way to the region. For a while, Native Americans and the new settlers coexisted peacefully. But as competition for land intensified, a series of fierce battles took place, culminating in the forcible removal of the Cherokee to an Oklahoma reservation in 1838. Resources For Children
What follows is a sampling from the wealth of children's literature available. Listed by age groups are three kinds of children's materials.
  • Books that relate to real-life events
  • Poems
  • Magazines
There are many other excellent lists of children's books. For more information, see the next section, "Resources for Parents."
Children's Books and Real-Life Events
One sure way to get children to love to read is to make connections between books and what happens in their lives. If the book relates to what happened in real life and children see themselves in it, both the story and the event take on greater meaning. There are numerous books that deal with almost any event in a child's life. We present here a few illustrative topics to show the relation between books and life. Topics chosen include celebrating family occasions; the very personal experience of a loose tooth; a new baby; and knowing more about explorations in outer space. FOWD 07 New York: Beautifying the web with Illustration
November 19 , 2007 7 comments
Once upon a time...
I was asked to do presentation on Illustration at the Future of Web Design in New York. Time flew by and November was here in a blink of an eye.
Presentation
here FOWD made a video they will be posting at a later time of the entire event. The slides are just images but the last slide contains the urls that I have for screen shots.
  • Level 1 of illustration is attraction. You want the users to be welcome, you are setting the stage, enticing them, making a first impression. Level 2 of illustration you are trying to get them to see you more than just a pretty face, you are connecting with them. Engaging them to have a conversation. There are so many designers out there you just have to choose the appropriate look for your site.
  • Questions
    • How do you convince your business to use illustration? I would create a sketch of the illustration. Explain what the benefit would be. What style do you think will be next in illustration? Hard to say, I have no crystal ball but the fun part is trying to come up with your own style if your an illustrator so that people will hire you for your UNIQUE approach. Plus its not just the style, its the ideas behind it, the concept.
