    INTRODUCTION
Carruth is a well-respected and prolific author, whose frequently autobiographical poetry encompasses a wide variety of emotions and forms and is noted for its unadorned, precise use of language. Often addressing such themes as the fragility of life, the fine line between sanity and madness, and the importance of social responsibility, Carruth has called his philosophy of poetry a "radical secular existentialism." Carruth's literary criticism, collected in such volumes as Working Papers (1982) and Effluences from the Sacred Caves (1983), is recognized for its directness and magnanimity, while

Linear feet of shelf space: 25 BIOGRAPHY Sam Hamill is the author of over 30 books, including original poetry, essays, and translations from Chinese, Japanese, Estonian, Latin, and Greek. Included among his works are Nootka Rose (1987), A Poet's Work: The Other Side of Poetry (1990), Only Companion: Japanese Poems of Love and Longing (1992), Destination Zero: Poems, 1970-1995 (1995), Gratitude (1998), and Dumb Luck (2002). Hamill received a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Guggenheim Memorial fellowship, a Pushcart Prize, two Washington Governor's Arts Awards, and many other honors. Details of Hamill's earliest years are vague. He was born in 1942 or 1943 to unknown parents. His birth father apparently gave him up for adoption when Hamill was about three years old; he was adopted by Sam and Freeda Hamill, who raised him near Holladay, UT. He attended Los Angeles Valley College and the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has one daughter, Eron, from his first marriage. Along with being a poet and editor, Hamill is also a teacher: he taught inmates in prisons for fourteen years, and participated in artist-in-residence programs for twenty years.

    SATURDAY AT THE BORDER
    by Hayden Carruth
"Form follows function follows form . . . , etc."
    Dr. J. Anthony Wadlington
Here I am writing my first villanelle
At seventy-two, and feeling old and tired
"Hey, Pops, why dontcha give us the old death knell?" And writing it what's more on the rim of hell
In blazing Arizona when all I desired
Was north and solitude and not a villanelle, Working from memory and not remembering well
How many stanzas and in what order, wired
On Mexican coffee, seeing the death knell Of sun's salvos upon these hills that yell
Bloody murder silently to the much admired Dead-blue sky. One wonders if a villanelle Can do the job. Granted, old men now must tell Our young world how these bigots and these retired Bankers of Arizona are ringing the death knell For everyone, how ideologies compel Children to violence. Artifice acquired For its own sake is war. Frail villanelle, Have you this power? And must Igo and sell Myself? "Wow," they say, and "cool"this hired

    58. Beautiful Dreamers: Helen In Egypt And The Sleeping Beauty

Beautiful Dreamers: Helen in Egypt and The Sleeping Beauty
    by Charlotte Mandel
Clockwatch Review: a journal of the arts. Bloomington, IL : Dept. of English, Illinois Wesleyan University, c1994-1995. ISSN: 0749-9311. vol. 9, nos. 1-2, p. 155-159, and is reproduced here with the kind permission of Charlotte Mandel. Call the muse Mnemosyne or Beatrice, Ewige Frau, Eve, Helen or Sleeping Beautyfor poets of either sex, the elusive inspirer materializes as a woman. On the game board of poetic quest, she is initiator, chief dice thrower, and the spiritual reality sought. Her image can never be physically possessedwhat she represents is the power of the poet's dreaming self. Helen in Egypt, H.D.'s mid-century touchstone of woman's self-discovery, revolves around the beautiful dreamer. For a male poet to risk entrance into that feminine energy field requires rare gifts of sensitive awareness. Hayden Carruth, by his long poem The Sleeping Beauty, published a generation after H.D.'s death in 1961, marks a significant turn in literary gender evolution. While H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) delved for transcendence into projections of the self, her contemporary, William Carlos Williams, yanked his imagined woman by the hair. H.D. portrays her beautiful Helen "moving in a dream," and therein lies her ineffable power. Without dream power, the woman is dispossessed of her generative role. Practicing his preachment, "no ideas but in things," Williams depicts his "beautiful thing" as victim of a catalog of graphic beatings. He goes on to say, "The page also is the same beauty: a dry beauty of the pagebeaten by whips" (126). Likened to the physical page his mind wishes to dominate, the poet's feminine subject becomes vincible object, significantly, she does not dream any part of his poem.
