3E Lewis Carroll Puzzles
Lewis Carroll, cleaning a lens Once master the machinery of Symbolic Logic, and you have a mental occupation always at hand, of absorbing interest, and one that will be of real use to you in any subject you may take up. It will give you clearness of thought - the ability to see your way through a puzzle - the habit of arranging your ideas in an orderly and get-at-able form - and, more valuable than all, the power to detect fallacies, and to tear to pieces the flimsy illogical arguments, which you will so continually encounter in books, in newspapers, in speeches, and even in sermons, and which so easily delude those who have never taken the trouble to master this fascinating Art. Lewis Carroll
According to the
Mock Turtle, the
four branches of
arithmetic are
(1) Ambition
(2) Distraction
(3) Uglification
(4) Derision. As a teacher of logic and a lover of nonsense, Carroll designed entertaining puzzles to train people in systematic reasoning. In these puzzles he strings together a list of implications, purposefully inane so that the reader is not influenced by any preconceived opinions. The job of the reader is to use all the listed implications to arrive at an inescapable conclusion. You will get the general idea after a few examples. We begin with one of Lewis Carroll's simpler puzzles, and work our way up to harder ones.

Rearrange the letters of NOR DO WE to make one word. Solution (From The Universe in a Handkercheif, Lewis Carroll's Mathematical Recreations, Games, Puzzles, and Word Plays , by Martin Gardner) 'First, the fish must be caught.'
That is easy: a baby, I think, could have
    caught it.
'Next, the fish must be bought.' That is easy: a penny, I think, would have
    bought it.
    'Now cook me the fish!'
That is easy, and will not take more than a minute.
'Let it lie in a dish!'
That is easy, because it already is in it.
'Bring it here! Let me sup!'
It is easy to set such a dish on the table. 'Take the dish-cover up!' Ah, that is so hard that I fear I'm unable! For it holds like glue- Holds the lid to the dish, while it lies in the middle: Which is easiest to do, Un-dish-cover the fish, or dishcover the riddle? Solution The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on on hearing this; but all he said was, "Why is a raven like a writing-desk?"... "Have you guessed the riddle yet?" the Hatter said, turning to Alice again. "No, I give it up," Alice replied. "What's the answer?"

Harvard, Princeton, and the Library of Congress house collections that are rarely seen by the public. Private collections abound, including that of the Lovetts, and many illustrations can be seen in the recent Bantam edition compiled and arranged by Cooper Edens.

Do anagrams in Lewis Carroll's poems prove he was Jack the Ripper?
07-Mar-1997 Dear Cecil: I heard there is a book purporting that Lewis Carroll and a close associate were actually Jack the Ripper. Supposedly done by a scholar, the book examined Carroll's "Jabberwocky," claiming there is a pattern in the nonsense words that reveals such messages as, "We killed the whores," etc. Have you ever heard of such a theory or book? If so, any ideas of your own on the subject? "Intriguing scholarship" or "skip this sheaf of academic drool and try spinning Ozzy Osborne LPs backwards?" A. H. Traugott, Austin, Texas Cecil replies: Stick with Ozzy. This drool doesn't even qualify as academic. Richard Wallace, author of Jack the Ripper, Light Hearted Friend (Gemini Press, 1996), spent "25 years in the data processing field," according to his bio, which for all I know means he spent a quarter century in the basement operating the paper shredder. The book proceeds from the following logic. Lewis Carroll loved anagrams. Anagrams reveal deep truths. The lines in Carroll's poetry can be formed into anagrams. Some of these anagrams strike certain crackpots as incriminating. Ergo, Lewis Carroll was Jack the Ripper. For example, Wallace starts with this famous verse from "Jabberwocky":

    Charles "Lewis Carroll" Dodgson
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born 27 January 1832, third child and eldest son of the 11(!) children of the Reverend Charles Dodgson and Frances Lutwidge . Like many of the Dodgson children, Charles stuttered fairly badly, something he never quite got rid of in spite of years of effort and even consultations with noted speech therapists of the day. In spite of this, Charles was comfortable playing with and even coining new words.
He attended Rugby school from 1846 to 1850, and was quite a good student, especially in mathematics. The following year, he began attending Christ Church, Oxford, his father's alma mater. Two days after he started, his mother died. His mother's younger sister, Lucy Lutwidge, moved in to help care for the family, and soon grew much beloved.
Charles received his degree with a first in mathematics in 1854. In spite of his stutter, he enjoyed teaching math , and this helped him gain enough confidence to later deliver sermons as well. Charles was at this time under a studentship, which meant he would continue to study and teach at Christ Church for the rest of his life, and he was expected to remain single and also to take holy orders at some point.
Already Charles was getting various poems and short stories published in magazines. About 1855, he wrote a "Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry" which would later become better known as the first four lines of Jabberwocky. Charles was very hard working and organized, which enabled him to write a great deal even though he was now Mathematical Lecturer and basically in charge of the whole math department.

for finding the day of the week for any given date
[this is from Martin Gardner's The Universe in a Handkerchief: Lewis Carroll's mathematical recreations, games, puzzles, and word plays (Science Library QA95 .G3325 1996)] Take the given date in 4 portions, viz. the number of centuries, the number of years over, the month, the day of the month. Compute the following 4 items, adding each, when found, to the total of the previous items. When an item or total exceeds 7, divide by 7, and keep the remainder only. The Century-item For Old Style (which ended September 2, 1752) subtract from 18. For New Style (which began September 14) divide by 4, take overplus from 3, multiply remainder by 2. The Year-item Add together the number of dozens, the overplus, and the number of 4s in the overplus. The Month-item If it begins or ends with a vowel, subtract the number, denoting its place in the year, from 10. This, plus its number of days, gives the item for the following month. The item for January is "0"; for February or March, "3"; for December, "12". The Day-item The total, thus reached, must be corrected, by deducting "1" (first adding 7, if the total be "0"), if the date be January or February in a leap year: remembering that every year, divisible by 4, is a Leap Year, excepting only the century-years, in New Style, when the number of centuries is

    an Agony,
    in Eight Fits
    by
    Lewis Carroll
      Inscribed to a dear Child:
in memory of golden summer hours
and whispers of a summer sea.
Girt with a boyish garb for boyish task,
Eager she wields her spade: yet loves as well
Rest on a friendly knee, intent to ask
The tale he loves to tell.
Rude spirits of the seething outer strife,
Unmeet to read her pure and simple spright,
Deem, if you list, such hours a waste of life,
      Empty of all delight!
Chat on, sweet Maid, and rescue from annoy
Hearts that by wiser talk are unbeguiled.
Ah, happy he who owns that tenderest joy,
      The heart-love of a child!
Away, fond thoughts, and vex my soul no more!
Work claims my wakeful nights, my busy days-
Albeit bright memories of that sunlit shore
      Yet haunt my dreaming gaze!
      PREFACE
If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing
nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but
instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line
