Lewis Carroll
by David Carroll
First Appeared in Burnt Toast#7
Let's forget all about sex and violence for a while, and just talk about Lewis Carroll, the man and his creations. Don't worry, we'll get back to the sex and violence later. Like his most famous creation, the man didn't actually exist, but was the pseudonym of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), a shy man prone to stutter, seemingly only comfortable in the presence of young girls, whom he loved and spent much of his life devoted to. And while it is his children's literature he is remembered for, he was known at the time for more then just this field. Among his talents were mathematics, invention (including a Nyctograph, a device to record, Braille-like, any thoughts during the night without getting out of bed), word and chess puzzles and had remarkable skill with the camera when the craft was in its infancy, having his work shown at London's annual Photographic Exhibition. He was a devout member of the Church of England, ordained a Deacon though seldom preaching because of his stammer. And he had an affinity for Tuesdays. As Martin Gardner describes him he is 'a fussy, prim, fastidious, cranky, kind, gentle bachelor whose life was sexless, uneventful and happy'.

Lewis Carroll
"Lewis Carroll" (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the author of Alice in Wonderland, of mathematical treatises, and of a quantity of stories and poems, serious and humorous, was the son of a churchman and the eldest of eleven children. His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Daresbury was isolated, but there was no want of children, so Charles invented games to amuse himself and his brothers and sisters. He made a train with railway stations in the Rectory garden; he did conjuring in a brown wig and a long white robe; he made a troupe of marionettes and a stage with the aid of the family and a village carpenter; he wrote all the plays for it himself, and manipulated the strings. The most popular was The Tragedy of King John.

abberwocky
Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll (a.k.a. Charles Dodgson) is generally considered to be the greatest of all nonsense poems in English. It is so well known that a number of its nonsense words have entered the Oxford English Dictionary. Alice (of Wonderland fame) here, in the paragraph following the poem, puts her finger on the secret of the poem's charm: "... It seems to fill my head with ideas only I don't know exactly what they are." Although the strange words have no precise meaning, they seem to chime with subtle overtones. These pages are dedicated to all who have come to like and love this poem which Alice discovers in a book. The poem occurs in the first chapter of Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There More Wonderland-related materials Last modified: Sep 97

THE NEW VIEW OF CARROLL
Lewis Carroll. c. 1860 From the publication of the Collingwood biography (1898) there developed a biographical tradition best described as ‘pseudo-Carroll’ that obscured fundamental truths of Carroll’s location in the theological, political and philosophical tradition of English thought. This psuedo-Carroll tradition rejected the idea of Carroll as a product of a radical movement grounded in the philosophy of Coleridge and his contemporaries that stood in opposition to mainstream and conventional religious and political ideologies. Most especially, it precluded acknowledgement of the fact that Carroll was fundamentally drawn to the key relationship between pre-Christian mythic structures, Celtic and north European mythic traditions and the development of Christianity in Britain. - Kate Lyon, "Instances of Mythological Symbolism in the Alice Texts" 2003

LEWIS CARROLL COLLECTION
Pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson Lewis Carroll was the author of two immortal children's books. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass . As a person, he was as mysterious, paradoxical, and witty as his characters and nonsensical verses. To sample the wonderful and playful style of his writing, you can read this little piece I especially prepared for you. It is the letter he wrote to one of his many child friends and later entitled "The Three Cats." I also have started typing up some of his whimsical verses Carroll, or Mr. Dodgson as his child friends would refer him as, was born on January 27, 1832 and died on January 14, 1898. In the 66 years of his life, he has written more than 10 books, some of them were children's stories and some of them were texts of maths and logic, since he was, for 26 years, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford. Other than the two Alice books, The Hunting of the Snark: an Agony in Eight Fits is also well-known amongst Carrollians . This Carroll Overview , as part of the Victorian Web, offers many articles by students, putting Carroll in the context of the world he lived in. Carroll was also a pioneer photographer and photographed many of his

Born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury, Cheshire, England, in 1832, he was educated at Rugby and Oxford, took orders in 1861, and was a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford, from 1855-81 when he resigned to devote his life to writing under his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll.
As a boy he was fascinated by the craft of conjuring and this, together with ideas for games, puzzles, anagrams, riddles, chess problems, mathematical recreation and logic, occupied his mind for all of his life. He was responsible for many original puzzles and new innovations, including ‘Doublets’ invented in 1879 and ‘The Game of Logic’ in 1886.
One can appreciate the extent of his obsession with puzzles when considering that almost all seventy-two of his ‘Pillow-Problems’, many of which had complicated mathematical solutions, were compiled by him while lying awake at night. He would commit nothing to paper until the morning, when he would first of all write down the answer, followed by the question and then the detailed solution.
The children’s classic: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865) was written for the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the head of his Oxford college. along with its sequel ‘Through the Looking Glass’ (1872) it combines elements of fantasy, logic and nonsense. He also wrote nonsense verse, notably ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ (1876).

Doublets Word Game
Doublets was the name given by Lewis Carroll to a word puzzle of his own invention. It made its first appearance in 1879, in the pages of a magazine called Vanity Fair , and it has been a popular form of Word Puzzle ever since. I will let Lewis Carroll describe the puzzle in his own words: "The rules of the Puzzle are simple enough. Two words are proposed, of the same length; and the Puzzle consists in linking these together by interposing other words, each of which shall differ from the next word in one letter only. That is to say, one letter may be changed in one of the given words, then one letter in the word so obtained, and so on, till we arrive at the other given word. The letters must not be interchanged among themselves, but each must keep to its own place. As an example, the word 'head' may be changed into 'tail' by interposing the words 'heal, teal, tell, tall'. I call the given words 'a Doublet', the interposed words 'Links', and the entire series 'a Chain', of which I here append an example: H E A D h e a l t e a l t e l l t a l l T A I L It is, perhaps, needless to state that it is de rigueur that the links should be English words, such as might be used in good society."
