scandales
But none of those macho brainiacs can hold a candle to the reaction of Caleb Carr when his writing was questioned last week. He wasn't accused of plagiarism, but when a couple of prominent critics said they didn't like his new book about the military uses of terrorism, "The Lessons of Terror," he donned his camo, smeared black grease on his face, unsheathed his knife and gripped it between bared teeth, then silently slipped into the water and swam away from the fort.
Except that Carr actually is
So under other circumstances I would be cheering young Caleb on to victory for his courage in taking on such an abuse of power. Why can't writers stand up to unfair criticism, not to mention incorrect criticism?
WHEN WRITERS RUN FREE
The new rage for "director's cut" versions of novels has recently given us unedited versions of books by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Robert Penn Warren, and others. This is a good thing, right?

REFERENCES COLUMNS Mystery Horror Set in New York City in 1896, 'The Alienist' begins as Theodore Roosevelt, then Police Commissioner of New York, enlists the aid of Kreitzler and John Schuyler Moore, a crime reporter for the New York Times. A series of murders of adolescent boys is causing a rising panic in the city. With Sara Howard, a police secretary, they will work to determine who is killing the boys by determining why the boys are being killed. It's nothing less than the birth of profiling as it is known today, in a dank and musty city of yesterday. The potential for trite walk-on history and anachronistic problem solving is enormous in 'The Alienist', but Carr's ultra-detailed and dense storytelling style overcome these traps before the reader even realizes that they could be problems. What Carr does is to present us with a picture of the city so detailed and so different from our own sensibilities that it seems almost as if the novel is a work of fantasy or science fiction. Dripping with sewage and slime, the streets running with offal and blood, 'The Alienist' presents a picture that the writer builds brick by brick. It all seems so unusual that the reader never has the chance to question Carr's authoritative picture. It's a gripping creation.

Caleb Carr: The NYT Profiles Him and His New House
Joyce Wadler, in the NYT (5-12-05): ONE could not call the road sign to Caleb Carr's 1,400-acre property in Rensselaer County welcoming. "Private land," it warns. Then there's the forbidding name of the spread: Misery Mountain Farm. Drive a mile, and you will come to a big stone house so freshly built that it seems to carry a just-born dampness. In places you can still smell the wood. The idea, Mr. Carr has said, was to build an old house, a house so historically accurate, so in harmony with its surroundings, that it would seem to have been there for 200 years. But it is too fresh, too bare for that. It is also, with its wraparound porch and pillars, far too grand to be a typical house in this rural community 180 miles north of New York City. Still, the fellow who eventually comes to the door is friendly enough. His graying hair, which hangs past his shoulders, is still wet from the shower. His clothing is worn and comfortable: a stretched-out sweater, blue chinos and old wool socks. There is a blue fabric brace on his right arm. "I, like most of my friends, couldn't believe I bought a mountain called Misery Mountain, because it was so appropriate," Mr. Carr said later, settled on the back porch in that most bucolic of human furnishings, a rocking chair.

Three thousand people died who didn't have to die. Caleb Carr I haven't always done things this way. It's the nature of the two books. They have been so consuming that I end up living inside them. Caleb Carr I wanted nothing less than to be a fiction writer when I was a kid. If you had told me I would be an artist or novelist when I grew up, I would have laughed in your face. Caleb Carr I was a pretty angry kid, and I got into military history largely as a way to vent my own anger. As I got older it narrowed down to a more specific focus on individual violence. I'm just trying to understand where it came from. Caleb Carr I'm still a firm believer that we were definitely put here to use our minds, and that is what makes us different. And that that's the key. If there is anything that is going to stop mankind from being such a beastly, destructive creature, it is reason.

The Italian Secretary: A Further Adventure Of Sherlock Holmes
by Caleb Carr CLR Rating:
The Game’s Afoot
Those writers whom the gods would destroy, they first tempt into trying to imitate another writer who has influenced them. You may love Faulkner, Joyce or Eliot, but that’s no excuse for trying to ape them – often badly – in your own work. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes tales have served as a will-o’-the-wisp to later writers eager to see what they can do with the world’s greatest detective as a primary character and his doughty sidekick, Dr. John Watson, as primary narrative voice. As it turns out, Caleb Carr’s facility with the genre of historical mystery holds true even when it comes to trying his own dark tale of Holmes and Watson battling evil, this time in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland. Carr, author of The Alienist series of books set in fin de siecle New York, serves up a cracking good yarn, albeit one beset by problems of pacing and plotting. The Italian Secretary takes place somewhat late in Holmes and Watson’s partnership, after the good doctor’s wife has died and he has removed himself back to 221B Baker Street. Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother and a crusty confidant of Queen Victoria, sends the men a mysterious telegram. Once decrypted, the wire sets the duo on a quick run to Scotland, where secret agents of foreign powers may be playing a deadly game with Her Majesty’s life.

The Italian Secretary by Caleb Carr
One of the more spectacular episodes in the life of Mary, Queen of Scots was the murder of her Italian “secretary,” David Rizzio, (who more was a musician and companion) by a group of nobles, led by Lord Darnley. They burst in on Mary and Rizzio, dragged out Rizzio, and stabbed him to death (stabbing him over fifty times). Darnley himself was later killed in mysterious fashion. If you tour Holyroodhouse, the royal residence in Edinburgh , and site of Rizzio’s murder, the tour guides will tell you all about it. This grisly historical incident forms the background to Caleb Carr’s Sherlock Holmes novel, The Italian Secretary. Two men are killed at Holyroodhouse, stabbed over fifty times. Mycroft Holmes, working for the Queen, calls in Sherlock and Doctor Watson to look into the case. Holmes and Watson travel to Edinburgh to sort through what at first appears to be political intrigue but which they soon discover has a much tawdrier source.

By Steve Gilliard
In today's issue of Salon, novelist Caleb Carr calls for government regulation of the Internet. As this is, of course, insane, one must say something, because as the man who wrote the Alienist knows, to let the insane run about, sputtering and babbling in public, is poor form.
In Malaya, men would occasionally run amok. An otherwise normal man would snap, run screaming out of his longhouse and start swinging with a kris, a wavy bladed knife. Most of the time, the locals would chop him up before he killed everyone in the village, but occasionally, a sallow-faced Englishman would have to do the deed.
It is not for me to say if Mr. Carr is running amok or not, I have neither Webley nor DSM III at hand , nor feel a need for either. Instead, I must use the tools at hand, words, to deal with this. After all, as a member of civilized society, I could hardly remain silent while such a thing remained at large.

Mr Carr:
I must inform you of several things which you may not be aware of. As I understand the writing of books can be an all consuming passion, your knowledge of the Internet may be lacking.
