Comment from USATODAY.com Host:
Caleb Carr is here with us today. On with the questions....
DC: Caleb: Love your books! When will "The Alienist" and "The Angel of Darkness" be made into movies?
Caleb Carr: That is really impossible to say. They've been in negotiations for years and years. It's not easy subject matter for Hollywood.
Maryland: I was sorry to read that your new book is set in the future. I love your depiction of turn-of-the-century New York. Will set any of your future books in the past (no pun intended)?
Caleb Carr: Sure, probably. And they will be set in all kinds of places. Possibly the present, possibly alternate reality, who knows? But more will be set in the past, yes.

Biography
Caleb Carr, a lifetime resident of New York, was born in 1955 and grew up on the Lower East Side. His father was an editor and close friend to famous Beat Generation writers, such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Although Carr was personally exposed to their style of writing and Bohemian lifestyles, he chose to take his own work in a different direction. Where the Beat writers wrote purely from expression and feelings, Caleb Carr's works are diligently researched and known for their historical accuracy. Caleb Carr developed a love of history at a young age, acquiring a keen interest in military history while attending a Quaker high school. This interest led him to major in history at Kenyon College and NYU. Notable works by Caleb Carr are The Alienist, which was on the New York Times' bestseller list for 24 weeks; The Devil Soldier; and Angel of Darkness. In addition to writing fiction, Carr is a contributing editor of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History. 030

On New York's "Americanness":
New York is really the only cosmopolitan American city. It's the only true city in America, in the sense that it's an international crossroads for more than one thing, more than one business, more than one activity. You have to go to London or Paris or cities of that caliber to really find this much sophistication, this much diversity . . . .
On Immigration:
Immigrants who came to America in the 19th and early 20th centuries were coming under the assumption that they were coming here to stay. They were coming here to stay because it was better than the way they were leaving. It was a sense of pride being given a chance to become a citizen. Whereas, now you have very much the sense that people are coming here, often for a limited amount of time, and their identity is fundamentally the one they've left behind. There's almost a begrudging sense of coming here. "I'm coming to America because I have to make some money, but I'm sending the money home, back to the country where I come from, and as soon as I am able to, as soon as I've made enough money, I am going back home myself." That's an entirely different thing.

By Mark Leyner A scorching satire about American culture, this "novel" details the bizarre adventures of a seventh-grader named "Mark Leyner." S A L O N R E C O M M E N D S A list of staff favorites, updated weekly Caleb Carr discusses serial killers, murderous moms and growing up terrorized by the Beats. BY DWIGHT GARNER "i was a pretty angry kid," says Caleb Carr, the bestselling author of "The Alienist." It's a steamy afternoon in late August, and we're sitting in Carr's tiny apartment, a fourth-floor walk-up in New York's East Village. More office than living space, the apartment is a jumbled assortment of maps, military histories, antiquated photographs. The 41-year-old Carr, who's wearing black Converse high-tops along with chinos, a white dress shirt and dark vest, clears off a chair so a visitor can plunk himself down. We're talking about how, when Carr was a kid growing up in Manhattan, he vented his anger into the study of military tactics. It's a slightly unusual interest for any kid. But in Carr's family, it bordered on the bizarre. ("It reduced my mother to tears, literally," he says, "because she equated it with killing.") Keep in mind, however, that Caleb Carr didn't grow up in your typical American family.

On the Lower East Side with Caleb Carr, talking about a dark obsession
Interview by Laura Reynolds Adler "I f anybody had said to me when I was an adolescent, 'You're going to write fiction one day,' I would have said, 'You're out of your mind!'" says Caleb Carr. "Because I thought all fiction was this kind of confessional, drunken, contemporary . . . BLECCCHHH!!" He sticks out his tongue as he says it, then lets loose a cackle. "If that isn't too fine a word to put on it." It was not until 1991 that Carr found a form of fiction to suit him, some 11 years after publishing his first novel, entitled "Casing the Promised Land." "It was one of those bildungsroman, coming-of-age things," he says dismissively of his literary debut. "That kind of pseudo-autobiographical contemporary fiction." The 42-year-old author feels that fiction should be about more than "just what happened to you. If you can't find a way to make it a more universal truth and a more universal experience," he explains, "you're not doing your job as a writer."
