Research Interests:
My research interests are focused on understanding how cells respond to stress. As cells grow they must be able to survive stressful conditions (e.g. elevated temperatures, lack of food, lack of oxygen) in order to divide and pass on their genetic information. All known cell types from bacteria to plants to humans respond to stress by making new proteins. Cells respond to elevated temperatures by expressing a unique group of proteins known as the heat shock proteins (hsps). These hsps help the cell to survive a wide variety of stressful conditions. Currently, my laboratory is studying the hsp known as heat shock protein 27 (hsp27). I am interested in the regulation of the protein (i.e. what causes it to be expressed) as well as the function of the protein (i.e. how it works). Hsp27 may play an important role in some types of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 1996 155,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 46,000 women will die from breast cancer. Most of these deaths will be from the spread of cancer from the breast to other sites in the body. Current treatment for breast cancer includes surgical removal of the tumor followed by either radiation or chemotherapy to destroy the few remaining tumor cells. These remaining tumor cells can ultimately form new tumors so it is very important to destroy them. Recently it has been reported by several groups that hsp27 is made in high levels in tumor cell which can form recurrent tumors.

B C D ... Z Gertrude Irene Carper Burrell Ames, Iowa, United States of America Brick Section C - Row 18 Jumping center, secretive teacher, bridge worker, swine editor, and loving Grammie
all describe Gertrude Burrell. Read on and see how it all fits together.
Born March 1, 1915 in Olds, Iowa, she was the youngest of Arthur and Leona Carper's three daughters. In addition to being prominent in all Olds High activities, she captained the girls' basketball team as the "jumping center" in the days when there was a jumpball after each basket. (She has been a consultant an two books, providing insight and experiences from the early years of Iowa
Girls' Basketball.)
Gertrude attended Culver-Stockton College for one year before transferring to Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). While at the Cedar Falls school, she met and had a whirlwind courtship with Harry Burrell of Iowa City. As their grandchildren often remind them, it was 59 days after they first met when they eloped across the Illinois border. After graduating, she taught at Ainsworth for two years, with Harry driving between Cedar Falls and there on the weekends. They kept
the marriage a secret for those two years, since teachers in those days couldn't be married. Only her sister and brother-in-law knew, as their home was often used as the weekend "safe house."
