Locust Mountain Boys,
Back in Time
(Catawba, 2005)
As bluegrass bands are wont to do, the Locust Mountain Boys have gone through personnel changes since their last recording, Ode to the Locusts (Catawba, 2003), which I reviewed here early last year. Only two members remain from the previous edition, Steve Carper Jr. (banjo, vocals) and Jesse Carper (mandolin, vocals), joined now by Jeff Johnston (bass fiddle, vocals) and Josh Wilson (guitar). Originally an assemblage of two generations of male Carpers and Dowdys, families with roots in the bluegrass and pre-bluegrass music of Virginia, the LMBs appear to have parted amicably. Steve, Victor and Donald Dowdy show up as guests on a few cuts. So does an older Carper, Steve Sr., who contributes a pleasing version of the old fiddle standard "Soldier's Joy." This is the sort of record best characterized as solid, as opposed to, say, inspiring. The LMBs put forth a younger, smoother version of the Stanley Brothers mountain sound. As it stands, they're a decent regional band, with if they have the ambition and apply themselves a shot down the road at a larger bluegrass audience and a bigger name. They have the instrumental chops, and they can sing. I have never heard them perform live, but their previous disc had a bright, lively ambiance that is muted here, unfortunately. A seasoned listener may have been willing to forgive the occasionally amateurish quality of

The Olde Hickory Tap Room's very popular "Jazz on Tap" nears it's Fifth Year Anniversary...... The Olde Hickory Tap Room has been host to the very popular, "Jazz on Tap" every Sunday night from 8pm-11pm for five years in June. Special guests from all over the state of North Carolina and it's borders are featured weekly. The house band is led by local drummer Rick Cline w/ jazz pianists and bassists from Charlotte, Asheville and Greensboro. The Olde Hickory Tap Room has established itself as one of the few jazz venues in the state and where many places have seen dwendling crowds in recent years, the Olde Hickory Tap Room has seen a steady growth of Sunday night regulars, with people coming from all over to see great live jazz.
In Dec. of 2004, pianist/organist Chad Lawson left for New York to pursue his dream as a musician. Currently, he has had 2 of his tunes on the jazz top 10 list. Since then, guest pianists, guitarists, and bassists have filled in each week with special guest instrumentalists and vocalists. The ever changing combinations of musicians and musical styles has proven to be exciting and
interesting to all walks of life. The atmosphere on Sunday nights has evolved into what many have called a true "jazz club". The audience is both attentive and receptive, folks come in every week with requests, and musicians fill the room to listen and to "sit in".

Caught your show tonight at Grand Lodge and enjoyed it immensely. Loved
the the wide range of music you played and the passion you have for
music. Reminded me of my college days and being a part of a band. Will
definitely make an effort to see some of your upcoming shows. In the
meantime, check out some Radney Foster tunes, specifically his cd Back

JUMP CUT
A REVIEW OF CONTEMPORARY MEDIA
Blade Runner
Skinjobs, humans and racial coding by Robert Barringer from Jump Cut , no. 41, May 1997, pp. 13-15, 118
Jump Cut: A Review of Contemporary Media Observations and criticism of the urban dystopia in Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER have focused on its borrowings from film noir, detective fiction, and previous filmic visions of an urban future.[1][ open notes in new window Given the history of slavery in the United States, any new race of U.S. slaves would be immediately comparable to African American slaves on the basis of forced labor alone. BLADE RUNNER goes further, using cultural stereotypes to code the replicants as black, and the humans as white. A close reading of the film shows a remarkably consistent pattern of racial coding that makes BLADE RUNNER an important and powerful commentary on U.S. race relations. Tobacco Road , in which someone asks "Was anybody hurt?" "No," the answer comes. "Nigger got killed." Despite parallels between the treatment of replicants and of African Americans, it could be argued that any slave system will have characteristics similar to all other slave systems and that the replicants do not necessarily correspond to U.S. black slaves in particular. Leaving aside the fact that BLADE RUNNER is an U.S. film set in an U.S. city, thus making U.S. themes and history its most likely cultural antecedents, the replicants exhibit behaviors and attributes specifically coded black. As a group, they are both physically and sensually/sexually superior to human beings, fictional traits that tie in perfectly with the national mythology of the oversexed, physically "gifted" black.
