May 11, 2007 - December 9, 2007
THE ERIC CARLE MUSEUM OF PICTURE BOOK ART presents: Creative Connections: The Art of Eric Carle and Leo Lionni. When Eric Carle returned to America in 1952, a meeting with Leo Lionni resulted in a friendship and a job lead. The rest, as they say, is history. Neither Eric Carle nor Leo Lionni ever imagined they later would create some of the most memorable picture books of our time. The similarities between these two artists are quite striking: their pictures are filled with animals and nature; they drew inspiration from their childhood experiences; and their early careers in graphic design can be seen in their bold simplicity and elegant sense of design. Most children have seen the vibrant collage illustrations in Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar , a book that has sold 17 million copies and has been translated into 30 languages. This museum, located in Amherst and founded by Carle and his wife, houses hundreds of his collages, sketches, and manuscripts. It's also home to a collection of original illustrations by other children's book artists such as Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak, Chris Van Allsburg, and Leo Lionni. Art is hung a bit lower than standard museum height to accommodate young viewers, and each gallery contains copies of the books that correspond to the illustrations on the wall.

The next time you read a book to your child, take a moment to contemplate the illustrations. Look closely at the materials used, and the skill involved. Think about how the artist took just a few lines of text and created an entire world. Imagine what the originals might look like. Or just visit the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Acclaimed author-illustrator Carle founded the Massachusetts museum in order to deepen people's appreciation of children's book art, and to help very young children into avid museum-goers. And by all accounts, it's working. As part of Babble's Field Trip to the Carle Museum, we spoke to Eric Carle. It may be the colors, or the shapes. Or the combination of the two. But often children's art is expressive in a way adult artists have to work very hard to achieve. We have to unlearn so much to be like children; to be closer to pure creativity.

Eric Carle Interview and New Museum of Picture Book Art Featured in Teachers.Net Gazette ~Artist-author Eric Carle was influenced by the good, the bad, and the beautiful~ SAN DIEGO, CA
Eric Carle speaks candidly and from personal experience about the "enormous power of good and evil" teachers wield in the cover article of the December 2002 Teachers.Net Gazette webzine. Penned by editor Kathleen Alape Carpenter, the article and accompanying photographs are available at http://teachers.net/gazette/DEC02/covera.html Carpenter sat with the famed picture book artist and author during her tour of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. Their conversation touched upon Carle's childhood experiences with one early teacher who nurtured and encouraged his talent, and another who caused him to dislike school. But, in spite of negative experiences in second grade, the beloved and prolific producer of some of the most cherished children's books ever emerged from U.S. and German classrooms with what it took to embark upon a long career, writing and illustrating colorful, entertaining storybooks. A few years ago, Carle decided it was time to give something back. Giving back meant the creation of the 44,000 square foot Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Founded and funded in large part by the Eric and Barbara Carle Foundation, the new museum sits in an apple orchard on the fringes of the Hampshire College campus.

"Education is one element of my books. The success of my books, I think is also due to their emotional impact. Caterpillar, for instance, is a book of hope. It says that you too - an ugly, little thing - will open your wings and fly. Kids who are insecure and young identify with that." "Even as a small child I was curious about animals... This love of and curiosity about ants, beetles, salamanders, and worms had been awakened in me by my father. He'd take me on walks through meadows and woods, and explain, as we explored, the often peculiar life cycles of these small creatures that we had discovered underneath a rock or dead leaf. Afterward he carefully put the little animals back into their original places and covered them up again." "Thinking about a book, writing and illustrating, is like designing a house and laying the bricks. Designing the book or refining the idea is the hardest part and takes up most of my whole attention. Illustrating is the bricklaying. Less time goes into the actual pictures. I spent two years thinking about Do You Want To Be My Friend? And I finished all the illustrations in one weekend."
