Nothing is known of Carew's education before he matriculated at Merton College, Oxford , in 1608. Graduating B. A. in 1610/11, he was incorporated B. A. of Cambridge in 1612, after which he was admitted to the Middle Temple. From 1613 to 1616 Carew served as secretary to Sir Dudley Carleton on embassies to Italy and the Netherlands. After being fired for making insulting remarks about Carleton and his wife, Carew returned to England for a futile search for employment. In 1619, his father having died the previous year, Carew joined an embassy to Paris headed by Sir Edward Herbert (later Lord Herbert of Chirbury). Possibly, he met there the Italian poet Giambattista Marino.

The poet was probably the third of the eleven children of his parents, and was born in West Wickham in Kent , in the early part of 1595; he was thirteen years old in June 1608, when he matriculated at Merton College, Oxford . He took his degree of B.A. early in 1611, and proceeded to study at the Middle Temple . Two years later his father complained to Sir Dudley Carleton that he was not doing well. He was therefore sent to Italy , as a member of Sir Dudley's household, and when the ambassador returned from Venice, he seems to have kept Thomas Carew with him, for he was working as secretary to Carleton, at the Hague , early in 1616. However, he was dismissed in the autumn of that year for levity and slander ; he had great difficulty in finding another job. In August 1618 his father died, and Carew entered the service of

Thomas J. Carew
Ph.D. University of California, Riverside, 1970 RESEARCH INTERESTS: Cellular and molecular mechanisms of memory
I have always loved mystery stories, especially "procedurals," which focus on the clever strategies and nifty tools used to solve particularly challenging puzzles. The mystery that has preoccupied most of my professional life centers on a deceptively simple question: How is it that we remember some things for a few seconds and others things for a lifetime? Said another way: What must go on in our brains to accomplish the seemingly effortless but actually quite remarkable tasks involved in storing different forms of memory? In my laboratory we explore these questions at a mechanistic level in a rather simple animal, the marine mollusc Aplysia . We use Aplysia because its nervous system affords significant advantages for identifying synaptic, biophysical, and molecular changes underlying learning and memory. In our experiments we use multiple levels of analysis: behavioral, cellular (current, voltage, and whole-cell patch clamp), molecular (analysis of second messenger systems, growth factors, and specific genes implicated in learning), structural (light and electron microscopy coupled with immunocytochemistry), and computational (quantitative analysis of single cells and small network interactions). Currently we have three parallel research programs:
In the first program we study the synaptic and molecular steps involved in the transition from one stage of memory to another (e.g., from short-term lasting minutes, to intermediate-term lasting hours, to long-term lasting days and weeks). We have found that each stage can be distinguished by its distinctive underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms.

  • Thomas Carew 1595?-1640
    English poet and masque writer.
    INTRODUCTION
Carew is closely associated with the Cavalier Poets, an informal group of early seventeenth-century English lyricists. All of these writers—Carew, Robert Herrick, Sir John Suckling, and Richard Lovelace—valued urbane wit and precise diction in their poems, and most—Herrick is the exception—had intimate ties with the court of Charles I. Carew is best known for his courtly masque Coelum Britannicum , love poetry, a small group of songs, several elegies, and erotic verse, most notably “A Rapture.” Overall, Carew is viewed as a significant transitional figure in English lyric poetry whose work epitomizes the light, elegant Cavalier style and features a witty rejuvenation of conventional forms in the period between the English high Renaissance and the subsequent Restoration era.
    Biographical Information
Coelum Britannicum , was performed at court in 1633. Many anecdotes survive concerning Carew's “life scandalous” as a courtier. He evidently cared little for religion and certainly endured painful bouts of syphilis. Meanwhile, he continued to write poetry, acquiring a reputation as a gifted lyricist. In 1639 Carew accompanied Charles on his expedition against Scotland. He died early in 1640, possibly as a result of hardships he suffered during the northern winter. His only collection of poetry appeared posthumously in the year of his death.
